Cisco Offers to License 'iPhone' Name to Apple

Recommended Posts

A representative of Cisco Systems, which acquired the iPhone trademark by way of its Linksys division having acquired Infogear in 2000, told BetaNews this afternoon that it is offering to license its trademark for Apple's use, and has drawn up papers to that end. "Given Apple's numerous requests to use the iPhone trademark, and extensive discussions with them," the representative told BetaNews, "it is our belief that with their announcement today, Apple intends to agree to the final documents and public statements that were distributed to them last night, and that addressed the last few remaining items. We expect to receive a signed agreement today." The phrase "last few remaining items" implies that discussions between the two companies have been ongoing. Up until as late as this morning, press sources had begun distributing Web pages referring to Apple's "PodPhone," including with regard to its deal with Cingular Wireless. Apple stock value has risen 7.4% in late afternoon trading Tuesday.

I wonder when Cisco is going to start making and marketing consumer devices (like cell phones and other devices) under it's own name. They've been all over the place, and now, with this Heroes promotion, what are we going to expect to see from them? "Cisco works with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, and QUALComm to produce the iPhone killer?" Maybe. Hopefully. Cingular sucks.

I think some companies have different ways of business thinking. It is better to stick to what ur're best at rather than trying to be the leader in everything and ended up screwing things and the market. And yeah Cingular sux. lol.

if Cisco forces Apple to pay for the iPhone name, they will have to take to court (around the world) various companies who have used iPhone to describe their various VoIP services.

    • I have disabled it, but the app is still taking space. I have a Mac and it is only possible to disable Ai on that, but I think that bit does get rid of the AI components after a while. What we are told is that we agree to all this when we use the devices as it is in the end user agreements, their software, they can do what they like. I doubt that any bill will happen in the U.S, the government there are in league with big tech firms. The E.U maybe, they seem to have some guts when it comes to tech companies. The U.K is not in the E.U, but some things still affect us. Our government is as gutless when it comes to tech companies as the U.s government.
