iPhone to cost

Recommended Posts

Reality Check:

It is almost certainly going to be able to play MP3 and not just iTunes DRM

?600 is a lot but most high end phones without a contract are.

The cost with a contract will much lower.

the price it is released at ($499 / $599), does include a contract. So thats probably going to work out at ?350 for the 4GB version, and at least ?400 for the 8GB version (for 4GB, $500 is ?250. Add in VAT which is ?50. Then add in that we usually get charged even more, and your talking around ?350 IMO, and the same thing with the 8GB version).

So for PAYG (without a contract), it will probably be around ?600.

That is of course, unless we get ripped off even more than usual lol.

- It will use Apple?s DRM software FairPlay which, ironically, no one thinks is fair, at all. This will stop users from playing anything other than music bought via iTunes.

You can play whatever the hell you want (aside from OGG or WMA). FairPlay ALLOWS it to play music purchased off iTunes.

How much is that in US dollars please? If I'm thinking 1 pound ~= 2 dollars, then that's like freaking $1000!!!!

Sorry, Apple, the iPhone is going to flop at that price. It's better to wait until next year when the parts are less expensive that to release something like that now. And no, this isn't the same situation as the iPod 5 years back.

You have to be with cingular for 2 years if you want this phone though..

iPhone (mastercard ad effect)

The cost of an iPhone... $550

The cost of a phone plan (with data) for 2 years... $2880

The cost of being happy with your current phone/carrier... priceless

Theyve changed the article.

Now says: "This will help tie people into bought music from iTunes, unless they opt to play DRM-free MP3s."

Right, lets get this bull**** about unlocked smartphones sorted out now!

Most expensive unlocked smartphone on the market ?430! Eat that bitches!

Thats still ?230 shy of the iphone...and the iphone wont be out for a damn year!

Nokia N93

Most expensive on the market...

How about:

TREO 650 SMARTPHONE GSM ?603.95 & Delivery

O2 XDA2s ?640

and that's only IF the iPhone really does get released at that price and I'm not convinced of that based on Amazon's pre release price.

Its not about the most expensive... it about what the user wants and what the user gets for the money... For a coroporate user.. a smartphone that costs about $200-$300 is more than enough for what they want and a smartphone is not even here for a 13 year old... so I dont see how the iPhone is going to appeal the masses

Dont find rediculous websites and try to make out thats their normal price!

Treo 650 ?205

The XDA2s isnt even for sale anymore, its an old model!

It's no more ridiculous than believing that Amazon's pre order price is any kind of indication of how much it will cost when it is finally released nearly a year later:devil::

HOLY MAMA... its 1000 euros and ONLY plays music bought on iTunes?

but yea, amazon really overprices ANY pre-order appart from games for example.

if it gets released in ONE YEAR, no doubt amazon will HAVE to lower the price incredibly.

europeans are used paying WAY more, but this is absolutely rediculous, no way it's gonna sell for that in Germany, UK and other countries.

ill buy it if its like 150 euros together with a 2yr-contract by vodafone or something.

additionally to that ill get a decent iPod. i'll need a new phone anyways, and i dont have to use the iPod feature, still i can for the content im willing to get on iTS anyways.

what's even more interesting: Euro is the way more used currency in Europe, why does Neowin always put the pound sterling prices? i mean it's easily convertable with my brain only, but heck! :p

Wrong.

My phone would cost ?700 w/out contract... but with O2 it was free. O2 XDA Exec.

Can just hope that they are able to do the same thing with this. 3G is an improvement (if it happens), but by then I would have been on HSDPA for a year... the iPhone was still designed for a US perspective and it will always be behind our tech curve until that changes.

Nokia N95 for me.

Because im the in the UK and dont work in Euro prices. Aswell as the fact the article was written about UK prices....

Great, funny to see the source: Amazon Germany...

Oh well, nevermind.

I don't care that much to make a discussing about it, I'm just wondering ;)

everything's cool ^^

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
