Valve: PS3 a "total disaster on so many levels"

Recommended Posts

What I mean is Valve could end up not being able to release games on the PS3 thanks to that comment/or similar ones. Yes I realize this is BAD for Sony but you know what sorta grudges get held nowadays.

Yeah, Sony is going to call them up and say " You no likee our playstation 3? NO SOUP FOR YOU!"

Please....even Sony isn't that stupid. This news will not be news in a few days and Valve will still be making games for the Playstation 3.

Difference being Sony has dominated consistantly since 1996 with the PS brand, beating off numerous consoles

-Dreamcast

-N64

-Xbox

We'll see how they do this round.

Well, Nintendo ruled consistently from 1983 to 1996 with the NES and SNES (13 years vs. Sony's 10). Your point?

Guys knows nothing...I'm waiting till someone from the developing community tells me its crap.

And he's not from the developing community?

Either way, it sounds like he's a bit frustrated with how complicated the system is to program for when compared to the PC and 360.

Also, if Nintendo hadn't turned over the Playstation to Sony to begin with there would be no Sony Playstation.

abandon the millions of people that have already bought one

since when have the sold a million consoles for the ps3

Millions? Hardly. I don't know how accurate NexGen Wars are, but according to them only 1.1 million PS3s have been sold. Even if they are wrong, I still doubt it has been millions since Sony said that it reached its goal of shipping a 1 million PS3s by the end of 2006. More than a million more hasn't been shipped since Jan 1, 2007. So no millions

The PS is still going so it can potentially overtake 13 years

The PS and PS2 weren't exactly the easiest to code for as well, and devs still managed to write games. The PS3's biggest problem is price (IMO); $600 is still a fair amount to drop on a system, especially considering the lack of quality games at this point. Drop the system price by even $100, and sales should pick up a little. As it stands, I don't see any reason the PS3 won't become another 3DO.

They were difficult, but still, they didn't have the compexity of the PS3, which features multiple processing points. What Sony needs to do is work on their documentation and implementation. I don't want to start a war, but this is one of the few things they need to learn from MS on.

remember they said this about the xbox360? people gotta learn to stop shooting there mouths off and wait to see results.

i'm not a sony fan, infact i own an xbox360.. but from the abuse we (xbox360 owners) took a year ago wasn't cool at all.. stop this BS articles.. nobody really cares.

If the PS3 fails.. so what?! then it means xbox and the wii will go to the final.. and they will bash the wii like they have every other console that comes onto the market.

remember the good old days? when a new console came out like Super Nintendo.. all the great articles about it, and absolutely no bashing.. now everything is completely oposite.. people put new ideas down in order to sit back in a year and say "i was right"

I don't get it...us web developers have been screaming at MS for years for a better browser and it wasn't until recently did IE7 get released (and trust me, getting web sites to look right in IE is hell) (and to be frank I still don't care for the new IE) but you know what? The hard truth is, us developers still needed to continue design and develop sites because we still need to bring the bacon home and technology still need to evolve despite the major draw backs from IE. I mean ok, if you want to design for Firefox, Opera and Safari only, thats fine; but good luck getting hired.

Same concept here isn't it? Scream and kick as much as you want, in the end you'll probably still end up developing something for the platform. Start over? A complete disaster? Give me a break. Sony can't start over if it wanted to. So you know what? If your not gonna program for the platform, sorry to lose you. But in all honesty? YOUR OPINION DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE GAMERS WILL JUST MOVE TO A ANOTHER COMPANY THAT WILL DESIGN FOR THE PLATFORM

Its your business, your loss..

No gamers will move to the platform with the most games.....

Why r u mad at valve the did not make the PS3 with some crazy hardware......and a suck ass dev kit....and at least microsoft provide decent docs....

That pretty much sums up how I feel - except for the 3DO part. No way the PS3 sells that poorly.

As far as Gabe: It's not like he had the nicest things to say about the 360, either (they just weren't as bad as his recent comments about the PS3). I'm pretty sure he criticized MS for going with a triple-core processor and an optional HDD.

Id like to see Valve create a gaming console, all they ever did was come up with half life 2 and thats all.Sony alone already made more money then they have with the ps3 less then 3 monthes.

You do realise that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, don't you?

First of all, you're comparing console sales to games sales, the hell?

Second, Valve is software, Sony is hardware, two completely different companies there.

Third, you think somehow because Sony have made more money in the last 3 months than Valve (obviously pulled that one off the top of your head), that Gabe's opinion is somehow less valid?

And another thing, "all they ever did was come up with half life 2"? Brilliant. Genius. I'm an in awe.

Yes I do,And also the wii pwns.

Their methods haven't hurt them in the past. PS/PS2 is the best selling console to date.

That doesn't make them right...

And the last two times around, they've only had competition from Nintendo, which was lackluster competition at best.

Now the Xbox franchise is broken in, and Microsoft has a much more friendly way of dealing with giving the developers the tools they need to create great games.

There's a new standard here that Sony sure isn't meeting, and developers are noticing it.

Sony hasn't made one penny on the PS3. They've lost vast amounts of money on it. It's not profitable yet.

Its kind of confusing when a lot of people on this thread are asking for facts. What facts could a developer give that we could really relate to? I mean they could go into an depth discussion on why the Playstation 3 development tools are lacking from what has previously came forth. It would be like trying to describe color's to someone that is colorblind, no real frame of reference and more community members trying to call out fakes on stuff they wouldn't have a understanding about.

Besides if a company like Valve that has been around for a long time say that coding for the PS3 is very hard, trust me, it is. They are in the business and don't say things lightly because so. They are practically saying the tools for the PS2 were better then the PS3. Imagine how upset you would be if Visual Studio .net was a leap and bound backwards from Visual Studio 6, you would be upset too.

A lot of game companies are upset because a lot of their programmers time is trying to figure out how the software works, instead of actually creating the game. The developmental tools are lacking and hopefully will be ironed out by Sony before to much longer to assist companies in making great games. Their is an unfair advantage in all this, and that would be that Microsoft is a Software Company. They know how to write good quality software, as they write a ton of development software already. Sony, while isn't new to this, doesn't have the years of development in only the software market.

Give it time, hopefully it will shape up and we will see some really good titles coming from the PS3, if not, then the PS4 is right around the corner. ;-)

Now correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Valve hand over the programing of EP2 for the PS3 to another company? Because if they did this shows how hard it is for them to program for the PS3...

it could, or it could mean valve wanted to save money or maybe thier build tools have problems / they can't get them to work with the PS3?

Sony could of hired out a few companies to help with the development tools I suppose.

Well this is just another problem for Sony to deal with, and one they should have thought about when the PS3 concept was being thought of. I think the whole next gen wars thing is completely dumb, and comparing the 3 systems is stupid.

If everyone (not saying everyone in this thread is) took off their fanboy hates for a couple of minutes, (and this is my opinion, it is not fact, its opinion) they would realise exactly why there are so many PS3's still siting on shop floors.

Lets comapre the systems realistically

- X360 - Obviously MS had the lead and released ages ago, games were developed, and its obvious that its easy to develop for. It had the graphics, sond, addons blah blah blah that made the "wow" factor.

- Wii - Simply put, its simple. Its not all that, its built for fun. Thats why its selling.

- PS3 - Well, what exactly does it have thats better than the 360. It is more expensive, and in comparing the console across different websites, some bias towards MS, some Sony. It adds nothing extra to what MS already offers. And its extrememly expensive, and now, we are being told its hard to develop for.

I don't see how people can arue with things, that is clear as day. If it was easy to develop, people would be pumping out games for it as quick as the games are coming out on Xbox. But they arn't.

No games, long development, and a huge price. Is it any wonder its still sitting on store floors?

    • Windows 11 is getting redesigned taskbar settings in new build by Taras Buria Microsoft is rolling out new Windows 11 preview builds in the Insider program, offering users new features and changes to try ahead of public release. In the Experimental channel (formerly Dev), Microsoft is shipping build 26300.8758, while in the Beta channel, users can download build 26220.8754. The changelogs do not contain much, but there is an important update to taskbar settings. Here is what is new in build 26220.8754: [Taskbar] Taskbar customization just got easier. As we continue to make improvements to the Taskbar experience mentioned last month, we've introduced a dedicated Taskbar Size setting, making it simpler to find, understand, and personalize your ideal taskbar experience. We've also made refinements to the transitions between taskbar sizes for a smoother overall experience. [File Explorer] We've improved the reliability of thumbnail previews for cloud files in the Details pane. The pane has also been reorganized so file properties are easier to find and review at a glance. Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrative mode. Fixed an issue where the confirmation dialog might display an internal Recycle Bin file name instead of the original file name when permanently deleting a file. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. And here is what is new in build 26220.8754: [Smart card removal policy] Administrators can now configure Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Windows 365 sessions that use Microsoft Entra ID (RDS AAD Auth) authentication to automatically disconnect when a redirected smart card is removed. This extends smart card removal policy enforcement to Microsoft Entra authenticated remote sessions, helping organizations meet security and compliance requirements. [File Explorer] Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrator mode. [Taskbar] Improved reliability of loading the system tray area of the taskbar. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. You can find release notes for build 26300.8758 here and for build 26220.8754 here.
