Pistyll Rhaeadr - The Tallest Waterfall In England & Wales

Recommended Posts

Heres a few pictures I took of Pistyll Rhaeadr in Wales, a waterfall 60ft higher than the Niagara Falls. The pictures were taken by infra-red remote on a Nikon D50, ND2 filter with 18-55mm kit lens mounted on a tripod. Only editing was a touch of sharpening and saturation on a couple of the photos.

very nice pics.. but i don't believe you just added saturation and sharpening... there is way too much unnatural glow/blur in the pics... i mean the first pic although beautiful, looks like milk more than water. Just my opinion.

Long exposure my friend.

All I did in that photo was slightly increase the saturation and sharpening. The "milky" effect is due to keeping the shutter open for 1 second. Next time you find some running water, mount your camera on a tripod, switch to shutter priority and take one picture at 1/125 and one picture at 1s. Compare the two and you will understand the effect :)

ps. some of the blurring on the greenery is due to the spray being captured during the long exposure.

thanks for the info.. i didn't mean to come off sounding like i knew everything, because i really don't know much about photography, yet. I had no idea long exposure would create that effect, it looks like a glow or blur effect was added. Either way they are very nice pics, and i thank you for the info, i'll have to check that one out myself.

also, it's a very nice gallery you have on flickr.. you take some very nice pics. Mind telling me how you achieve this effect as well.

#1 I'm not to crazy about the composition and It is just a little to soft I think.

#2 is just wonderful

#3, I might have aimed the camera down a little more to get some more of the grass in the shot, just to get a little more depth. Still very good, I like the angle and the water looks great.

#4 is all right too.

Just a little criticism if you don't mind :)

Thanks for the compliment! That photo was taken in a similar way. I mounted my camera on a tripod on a bridge overlooking the motorway. I then selected shutter priority, and set the speed to 30 seconds. Once I was happy with the composition I fired the shutter with the infra-red remote to eliminate camera shake. You can experiment with different shutter speeds to get it how you like :) For more tips like this, I highly recommend "The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby.

Just a little criticism if you don't mind :)

Constructive critisism is everyones best friend in my opinion, it helps for other people to evaluate your photos to see if you like their ideas. Thanks for the feedback! :)

nice photos dude are all ur photos on ur flikr account done with the d50?

Thanks! The majority were taken with the D50, but a few were taken on my P+S. If you click on one of the images, on the right hand side under additional information it tells you which camera it was taken with.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
