Trying to decide if I should upgrade from Business to Ultimate

Recommended Posts

I?m using Vista Business and I?m trying to decide if I should upgrade to the Ultimate version. As I see it there are three main things Ultimate has that Business doesn?t, Bit Locker, Media Center and Ultimate Extras.

Bit Locker seems like a good idea, curious that it was omitted from the Business edition considering you?d think business people would be the ones who would most want to protect their data.

Media Center, will I ever use it? It seems nice but if my PC isn?t connected to my TV is it meaningless?

Windows Ultimate Extras, will it just be some nonsensical little applications that really mean nothing?

Is anyone else trying to decide if upgrading to Ultimate is worth it?

I'm running Ultimate, and unless you are a heavy media user, then I really don't think you need to upgrade. Having Media Center is nice, but I don't even have a TV tuner card and I hardly have any videos. The only thing I use Media Center for is to view my content on my Xbox 360, but like I said, most of the media on my computer is music and pictures, both of which I have little-to-no need to view on my TV. But you don't need Media Center to do this -- Windows Media Player 11 also has a sharing feature. As for the Ultimate Extras, they are definitely nice, but mostly unneeded. The only one that I sometimes use is DreamScene (which is not yet available to the public), but I usually just prefer a standard, non-moving image for my desktop. And as for Bit Locker, unless you have some highly sensitive data that you need to encrypt, I really see no need for it. Bottom line -- if you are a heavy media user looking to get the best experience with your videos, pictures, music, etc., then Ultimate is the best choice for you. Otherwise, the Business edition is MORE than sufficient.

NO, waste of money.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
