Blu-ray media outselling HD-DVD 2-to-1

The first official retail tracking data from Nielsen VideoScan seems to show Blu-ray Disc outselling HD-DVD in unit software sales by a more than 2 to 1 margin, and the gap is widening. According to data reported in Home Media Retailing (you'll find it on page one of the digital edition available on their website) for the week ending 1/7/07, Year-to-Date tracking indicated that for every 47.14 HD-DVDs sold there were 100 Blu-ray Disc titles sold. Just a week later, ending 1/14/07, the same YTD tracking indicated just 38.36 HD-DVDs sold for every 100 Blu-ray Discs sold. What's more, tracking by Nielsen VideoScan since the inception of both formats appears to indicate that Blu-ray Disc is quickly erasing the sales lead HD-DVD enjoyed as a result of launching months earlier in 2006. On 1/7, HD-DVD's lead was 100 discs for every 85.05 Blu-ray Discs sold, while just a week later on 1/14, that lead had been reduced to 100 HD-DVDs for every 92.40 Blu-ray Discs sold.

Specific unit volume numbers are not available, but one would guess they're still fairly low. No doubt much of the sales surge has to do with the arrival of Sony's PS3 game system in November. We'll have to watch closely over the next few months to see if these trends are affected by specific new software/title releases on both formats from week to week. Still, this data seems to bear out claims made by the BDA at CES, to the effect that their format was outselling HD-DVD as of December 2006 and that the margin could grow to as much as 3 to 1 in early 2007. It'll be interesting to see how continuing sales of the PS3 (and new dedicated players for both formats) impact these numbers as well.

Stay tuned...

I still don't believe in this. You could check amazon and other online shops, and the results should be that HD-DVD is wining this side. Sony has already said that they are going to outsell HD-DVD 3.5-to 1 this year a month ago. But more titles are coming on HD-DVD and it's more cheaper.

But the best would be using both format. And we all know that we know that we don't need more space for HDTV movies than HD-DVD 30GB discs. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray rips are almost at the same size. There are about 20-30+ HD-DVD rips floating on the net and maybe 1 Blu-Ray as I heard.

more cheaper?

Porn, as most of you probably know has chosen to use HD-DVDs. Don't expect HD-DVD to blow (pun intended).

well as far as u can see neither side will win, manufactuers have already started creating the cross platform players so chances are they will both learn to co-exist

when the HD-drive for the 360 gets back in stock over in the UK i might think about getting one though :p

umm once you factor in PS3's games on Blu-ray this makes sense... get rid of PS3 and what do you have? There is more PS3 games out now then movies it feels like (i know thats not true, but you see more PS3 games then blu-ray discs at stores where ive been) and there is no console with HD-DVD so, it's not selling games on it of course... so its media will be less in the end... media schmedia... I want to see video sales numbers, thats where the real contest is right now

being the 360 doesn't have it on default, it makes it weaker for HD sales

but let me tell you i own about $1,000 of Nex Gen Disc and only 2 are blueray and 1 was free...

the transfers are horrible ! even review of the same movie show that

i hope blueray dies a good one because of the waste of time sony is creating AGAIN, less space but the codec used in HD is rocking blueray off the boat.

if you care about storage then they will have triple layer disc for HD.

the disc in its self is the only thing good about blueray

but people that dont even have HDTV will buy blueray because their PS3 will play it and they think about well i might as well becasue once i get a HDTV i have the disc already... This factor here explains the gap and makes sense to me.

i have a ps3, i support sony but your getting your ass kicked with quality

I would like HD-DVD to win. Blu-ray movies look like crap!

The movie quality on both is very similar neither look noticeably different over the other.

As for the whole battle itself, I want Blu Ray to win as its a far superior format, sure its more expensive but so were CD's and DVD's when they first came out. Besides with the size of Blu Ray from its smallest 25GB to its largest 100GB(quad layer) its going to be very unlikely it will be heavily pirated which is better for the movie companies, the extra money they spend to produce a Blu Ray movie they will surely make back in the lack of pirated copies.

Besides I own a PS3, so who needs logic right? GO SONY! wooo lol

    • Indeed - drives me mad - usually because Refresh is hidden in the full menu.
    • Firefox has had rounded corners for many years. I take it you're not a fan of modern browsers?
    • The problem is in the fundamentals of how businesses are allowed to operate and the change should happen in the basics and certain consumer friendly and moral practices should be enforced by law. This would fix so many things, not just this ages old default browser issue which is a tiny drop in the backut that includes a flood of privacy and other issues.
