Blu-ray media outselling HD-DVD 2-to-1

Recommended Posts

Shame.

I still think HD-DVD will win in the end, I mean you do the math:

People know what DVDs are, people are getting used to HD TV's so. . .

HD + DVD = HD-DVD

But what the hell has Blu-ray got to do with media? It's not the best name.

I want Blu Ray to win as its a far superior format...

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!! Oh, man... *breathes* that was really... bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!

...they will surely make back in the lack of pirated copies.

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!! Oh my goodness!!! Just when I catch my breath, there you go again. Man, oh man, too funny. Thanks, though, I really needed a good laugh today.

Well tbh I was expecting this sooner or later.

Universal have just got off their bums and decided to post some release dates on some killer movies exclusive to HD-DVD (Jurassic Park, Children of Men, The Matrix to name some) so I'm sure you will see this gap dissappear due to HD-DVD owners atm not having enough content to buy (like myself). The release dates for HD-DVD were lacking for Q1 2007 compared to Blu-Ray, the announcement seems to have bridged this though.

This format wars is for the long haul so I don't think anyone will be a winner soon.

lol, I don't usually applaud that kind of behaviour but your comments did give me a laugh!

And yes, I was referring to the General Public - not everyone is a geek like us :p

They need more HD-DVD players out there. Toshiba can't do it alone.

Yeah, but then again, this is why I think Blu-ray will win. I could buy a Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic or Sony player (with at least LG on the way) or a Sony, LG or Plextor PC burner. With HD-DVD, there's only Toshiba and NEC. With such a limited choice in players, I find it hard to believe HD-DVD will win.

EDIT: For the record, I want non-DRMed video on holographic disks to win. More storage and none of the digital restrictions management.

As this has been said many times: don't believe this.

Shops are purposely running bluray in front of the world and on top end tvs, whilst HDdvd is running in some back room with some **** non-hdtv. Because they get more commission as bluray costs more.

The movie quality on both is very similar neither look noticeably different over the other.

This i agree with, they both use the same codecs, the only reason 1st Generation Blu-Ray films looked worse than HD-DVD is because they used MPEG2 which is hardly the best codec to use against HD-DVDs VC-1 titles.

As for the whole battle itself, I want Blu Ray to win as its a far superior format, sure its more expensive but so were CD's and DVD's when they first came out. Besides with the size of Blu Ray from its smallest 25GB to its largest 100GB(quad layer) its going to be very unlikely it will be heavily pirated which is better for the movie companies, the extra money they spend to produce a Blu Ray movie they will surely make back in the lack of pirated copies.

Blu-Ray isnt a superior format at all, just because its more expensive doesnt mean its better, there are 50Gb triple layer HD-DVDs going into production soon as well which kind of negate any advantage Blu-Ray had in the space stakes, hell they even tested Dec(10) layer discs.

Besides I own a PS3, so who needs logic right? GO SONY! wooo lol

Thats just made your argument null and void.

I dont want either to win, i like choice, and i dont want to have to be stuck buying Blu-Ray as Sony gets lots of royalties...

Matsushita (panasonic) and Pioneer both get more royalties than Sony as they both hold more patents in blu-ray. I can't remember, but I think that Phillips' investment in blu-ray is about equal to or a little less than Sony's. But Sony is not the biggest blu-ray supporter nor the sole creator. If neither wins they will both die, and no one wants that. All I want is one high-def format so that public confusion can be ended and hopefully more fence sitters will buy in. That way sales could increase and more big-gun movies can be released.

51GB triple layer media is not going into production soon. The HD DVD forum hasn't ratified it (they already didn't ratify tl45), and they don't know if all current and future players are compliant. I believe that microsoft insiders on the AVS Forums admited that it couldn't even be mass produced yet and that there still wasn't a working sample outside of a lab. Still, 51GB with 1.5X will be HD DVD's best bet for wooing Disney and Fox, but its use for movies is not a certainty by any means. In my opinion the tl51 with 1.5X speed announcment was just damage control until it is actually ratified.

Mpeg2 was not entirely responsible for the sub-par early releases on blu-ray. What was responsible was poor quality source material and lack of quality control on Sony's and Lionsgate's parts (although didn't Sony encode Lionsgate's movies for them atleast early on?). However, in the releases following those early mistakes mpeg2 has proven perfectly adequate in every release with great source material. And where it's needed avc and sometimes vc-1 is now being used. No one can argue that mpeg2 on 25gb discs hasn't provided fantastic presentations after the early problems.

With the hybrid players already on the market and those one coming later, this will mean nothing anymore.

I am waiting at least 2 years and see what will happen. ?Way too expensive right now.

And what my wife will say! ?Look honey, I've got one of those new bluray player at only 1100$! (cad)

Exactly.

Panasonic Hollywood labs made the bulk of what is blu-ray.

And even if HDDVD wins, Sony still gets money for IP they own for disc layering, and Panasonic for their video compression technology.

personally i like HD-DVD better. They seem to be more consistant with video quality. Also i dont really care to much about blu-ray having more capacity. Even if HD-DVD never rolls out thier tripple layers they already proved with King Kong that they could put an amazing transfer on just 30gb.

but when it comes down to it i guess it really doesnt matter. I own both formats so im not really worried who sells more as long as i get all the HD movies i can get i'm happy.

    • Alien Isolation 2 will bring a new protagonist and setting, watch the reveal trailer here by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Only a few weeks ago, Sega and Creative Assembly dropped a teaser for a new Alien Isolation. Today at Summer Game Fest, Alien: Isolation 2 was officially announced with a new trailer while also confirming a whole lot of information about the setting of this survival horror project. Check out the reveal trailer above. Leaving behind the Sevastopol space station, the sequel will take players to a remote colony world. With a Xenomorph (or more) on the loose, players will be navigating both the surface of the weather-ravaged planet as well as "the claustrophobic confines of the Weyland-Yutani outpost of Kurosaki Station." Interestingly, Creative Assembly is leaving behind Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Alien's Ellen Ripley, as the protagonist too. While it hasn't confirmed a name yet, players will be taking the role of a new character for this new adventure. The setting is also being described as a new hunting ground for the Alien. This will have players improvising and developing new tools to aid in their survival and escape, all to avoid "cinema’s deadliest killer." "It has been over a decade since we created the original Alien: Isolation and I am so excited to show everyone the first glimpse of the sequel," says Al Hope, Creative Director at Creative Assembly. "Our dedicated Survival team at Creative Assembly has been working hard to create a new, evolved Isolation experience continuing the legacy of the Alien franchise, making the eponymous killer smarter, the environment harsher and the chance of survival slimmer." Promising the same deadly tension from the original from over a decade ago, Alien: Isolation 2 is in development for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. A release date has not been announced yet.

    • Hello, From looking at the screen shots in your motherboard's manual at https://endownload.colorful.cn/EnDownload/MotherBroard/2022/Intel 600/Manual/Intel 600 Series BIOS English/Intel 600 Series BIOS User Guide.pdf, you go to the ADVANCED option at the top of the BIOS (UEFI) menu, then select SECURITY in the list of options on the left.  From there  you can enable and set the Secure Boot mode.
