CATANIA, Sicily -- The weekend soccer program in Italy has been suspended after a policeman was killed during fan trouble at a match between Catania and Palermo, the Italian soccer federation said on Friday.

A 38-year-old officer died as violence flared during and after the Serie A game between Sicilian rivals Catania and Palermo, which Palermo won 2-1.

The game had already been given an early evening slot on Friday because of fears over public safety.

FIGC has now cancelled the weekend's other games in the top two divisions.

sickening this is, however, if it happened in an English game, we'd be banned from the next major tournament. Italys fans are miles worse than ours and nothing major happens to them, we get thousands banned, yet we havent killed any police officers to my knowledge and we get major warnings :(

I believe they are now calling for a total ban of football for up to a year, domestic and international. If that isn't extreme, I don't know what is. Also, Michel Platini, the new UEFA chief fully supports what the FIGC is doing at the moment. I can't imagine what the italian players, coaches and supporters are thinking right now if this happens.

the teams knows the names of the violent fans... but they don't want to stop. And the suspension damages those club without violent fans too... and that's not fair
