My 2nd Basketball Experience

Recommended Posts

This is only my second time shooting basketball. I got myself a 50mm 1.8 to use, so I was very excited to go this time. I learned lots of good things today:

1: My high school gym's lights cycle.

2: Nothing is ever as easy as the appears to be.

3: People like to walk in front of your shots.

4: Your horizons are NEVER strait!

5: I really like to auto focus on the crowd instead of the players. About half of my shots were that way.

And there were lots of other things too, I'll remember them later. These were shot at 1/320th, F1.8, 1600ISO.

I got there a little early and caught the tail end of the JV game..

And I got this would be great photo, but didn't.

Our team hasn't been doing so great this season, but this game came down to the wire!

Even with seconds left in the game and down 2 point he is still all smiles.

This is the would be game winning 3 pointer that didn't happen. I love everything that is going on in the photo.

I always like the pictures of a big part of a game, like a final shot, field goal, or something like that. I like to look at all the peoples faces in the background and see all their reactions. Their is always that one idiot who is eating a hotdog and not even paying attention. In the leading off section of sports illustrated they usually have some good ones, but only three pics a week which is kinda annoying, becuase its is sports illustrated afterall.

and im going to guess that the kid shooting the final three hit the back of rim, that is if he had the right range.

Well it is nice having a lens that I can have a nice small (large?) aperture. The camera I was using before was F/3.5, and the highest usable ISO was 400, which leaded to like 1/30th shuter speed: Not good for sports.

After looking at these, they look a tad under-exposed to me. I might bump my shutter speed to 1/250th next time, or take a little more time to edit them...

1.- Shoot in raw so you can gain light with after process software without losing too much quality.

I should start doing that, and not take so many shots (Fills up CF cards much faster)

2.- Dont use autofocus

I would in a heat-beat if it was easier to manual focus the XTi. Maybe if if I get one of the grounded down screens. Or I could just works on my auto focusing technique.

    • The site is pretty sparse on features / tech specs. Can I plug it into a PC/hone/Switch via USB-C and use it as an external display? If so, what's the virtual resolution of the screen, the refresh rate, PPI of the image etc? Is the text crisp enough to use for coding at say 12pt? Is it good enough for playing dark games, like say Path of Exile 2? How about fast games like car racing games? Just how do they expect anyone to order this thing without giving out all this info?
    • I call complete bs on this - no way your average joe / jane is using AI.
