Vista lifts PC sales by 67% in its first week

Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows Vista operating system spurred a 67 percent increase in personal computer sales at U.S. retail stores in its first week on the market, according to research firm Current Analysis Inc.

Hewlett-Packard Co. was the top PC seller by units during the week that ended Saturday, with its share rising from about 33 percent to more than 50 percent, according to the report by San Diego-based analyst Samir Bhavnani. Gateway Inc. was the No. 2 seller. Dell Inc., the world's second-largest PC maker, wasn't included because the company doesn't sell through stores.

"It's one of the bigger sales weeks we have seen since 2003," Bhavnani said. The increase compares with sales in the same week a year earlier. Current Analysis declined to say how many PCs were sold in total in the week.

ye loads of people brought new PC's to run vista they still probs got rid of the old... so PC usage is about the same

You missed the point of the article entirely. They're not comparing usage, they're comparing sales. And it's because of Vista that sales spiked.

ye vista sparked sales because when XP was released not many manufactors had XP preinstalled now there is 10000 more pre built PC sellers and they are all offering vista :p

Uhh, they weren't comparing it to anything that has to do with XP either. They were comparing it to last year's sales at this time and since 2003 (two years after XP was released).

For the love of god, reread the article, and do it carefully.

One would hope with the release of their new OS, sales would increase. I'm sure theres many Mac users awaiting Leopard before they buy their computer, same with Windows users, many probably waited. I doubt the spike will continue, it will likely fall back down to what it was at before after the first month or so.

Oh yeah?! Sales increased because of Population increase... those 6year old twerps in 2001 can now aford $140-200 OS. These sales figures do not justify Vista's "DEMAND" as there is no 'Real' demand for the software; Yet. Maybe, when Windows discontinues support for XP, but that will not be for a Long while.

What are you talking about? This isnt a comparsion of raw numbers, its percentages, population increase dosnt have anything to do with it.

    • LOL. Can't even quote and edit a comment correctly. Figures you're a Linux user.
    • I have disabled it, but the app is still taking space. I have a Mac and it is only possible to disable Ai on that, but I think that bit does get rid of the AI components after a while. What we are told is that we agree to all this when we use the devices as it is in the end user agreements, their software, they can do what they like. I doubt that any bill will happen in the U.S, the government there are in league with big tech firms. The E.U maybe, they seem to have some guts when it comes to tech companies. The U.K is not in the E.U, but some things still affect us. Our government is as gutless when it comes to tech companies as the U.s government.
