AIM 6.1.16.1

Could you PLEASE PROVIDE a DIRECT link to the FULL DOWNLOAD rather than hiding it somewhere - I don't care if it is in some other 'place' put the damn link on the download page along with everything else; and once release; do the same thing for the RTM version.

And people wonder why people hate AOL and hate AOL written software - written and maintained by 'thick as pig ****' morons who can't be bothered making life easier for end users.

Great; but that is the BETA version, how about a link for the FULL VERSION, RTM version; and once the 6.1 RTM is released, provide a FULL VERSION link.

Again, I go onto www.aim.com and where is that full version link? go onto beta site, where is an easily accessable link to the full version vs. the web download?

I agree 100%, SULAX are you listening? :p This is my #1 , huge big major major only suggestion for AIM 6.0, let it skin with the damn OS!

I am listening, and my personal take is do you feel this way with regards to every other application that no longer has "an OS theme"? Do you hate iTunes, Winamp, WMP, Yahoo products, etc etc etc? I understand you want OS theming, we offer an OS them as part of AIM Lite, but frankly I think yours is more of a statement that you dislike our UI then it is the need to have or want the UI to look like a traditional Windows application.

well why dont you consider making an option where the users have a choice between the current aim 6 theme and a theme that uses the windows aero type interface to mix in with windows...the current yahoo messenger has an option where you can either stick with indigo or go to classic which takes on the current os theme...i think that would please everyone then and it would eliminate a lot of the theme complaining...just a suggestion though

Yeah, I honestly do get annoyed by every other app that doesn't at least give the *option* of skinning with the OS. Having your own theme is great, just give us the option to turn it off if we wish.

Settle down, obviously you're going to download it becuase 6.1 IS IN BETA!!!

And AOL isn't the only company that has a download to download the initial application, if you don't like it find the full download or don't download it. Your not being forced to use it.

OK, I hear you guys. I think what you are saying is MORE than reasonable. Sorry I took the post as an attack solely on AIM, which is why I was condescending in my response. I agree with you guys that we should have multiple themes, both made by our users and also made by us. AIM Lite proves this can be done, but its still not perfect...

One thing that will be interesting is to see how AOL and Microsoft react to Yahoo's upcoming WPF messenger. I can definitely see MS doing something similar for WLM, but I just can't see AOL dedicating the resources to something that would require a sizable change the to code of a rather new piece of software.

Don't get me wrong, I was not attacking you at all in either post. I have a great amount of respect for you for coming here and listening to us. If you can implement the option to skin the app natively with the OS that would be awesome =)

One thing to try to understand is the fact that Neowin members tend to reply the same way to each AIM release:

"waiting for ad-hack"

"Let windows skin it!"

I don't know about Sulax, but I sure get tired of it lol.

You're not the only one Chris. I will never understand why members just have to post "waiting for Ad Hack". If you're waiting for it, then wait for it, why are you posting that you are waiting for it?

Speaking of ads, this new build's (not sure if it was in the others) ad is exasperating! When you hover over it (to get to Edit), it "pops" out larger. Eeek! Greg what is going on here??

Do you hate iTunes

Yes

Winamp

Not with the v2 theme

WMP

No, but it's never visible on my screen...

Yahoo products

God Yes

Opera

Yes.... Ok, you didn't really say that one, but it seriously belongs on that list.

Personally, I'm still boycotting new AIM versions until aolsoftware.exe dies.

Pretty good suggestion I may add.

Adobe provides a full download on their site, along with the web based download; Sun for their Java offer two types, the smaller web based installer and the full version off line installer; I go over to Microsoft where I can download a Microsoft Office Service Pack I can, like the above, use the web based delta download OR download the full version which is around twice the the size.

Geeze, all those examples and AOL has to 'break the mould', 'rage against the machine', 'rock their boat' with their stupidity in regards to placing a link on their site; what is so hard, on their main site offering two download links; "full download" and "web download" along with a little blurb about the difference - is it *really* that hard? Honestly; you'd think that a company that size there would be some people with enough cranium capacity to crunch that idea through.

What's going on is that I need a new Ferrari...JUST KIDDING! Hey it could be worse, if you used AIM back in the day we ran an ad for TravelZoo that used to pop open a new browser window on mouse over. While this is not "new" to the AIM client, I wish we could do adds differently. If you have been reading my blog, I did an at length post regarding the Ad Model in Web 2.0. IMO, it is not working, and I propose a new way to do advertising. You can check it out here.

One thing that really bothered me about AIM6 was if I copied and pasted text from another one AIM conversation (or anything with html formatting I think) to another, any new text I entered in the window that I copied the text to... would insert a blank line before my text. And if I copied more text from another conversation, it would insert another blank line. Does that make sense to anyone?

It would be like this:

before c/p text my messages showed up in the window like this:

benstudley: blah blah blah

friend: tru dat

after c/p text and sending it to friend any subsequent text would be like this:

benstudley:

blah blah blah

friend: tru dat

c/p text twice:

benstudley:

blah blah blah

friend: tru dat

and so on. It would add one blank line for every time that I had c/p text from another AIM convo. If I closed the conversation window and re-opened it, it would fix it.

Anyone else experience this problem? I'm not installing aim6 again until I know it's fixed :/

After using this build on my desktop and 6.0.28.1 on my laptop i can tell you one thing I don't like in the new build...

Linked Screen Names -- The thing that looks like a locked screen name when you click on it doesn't do anything. Not sure if that is designed behavior or what. Also I HATE the fact that I can view all names at once like 6.0.28.1 i can see 3 sn's and all buddies at once without having to click anything. If I want to minimize one SN and use say 2 at once i can't do that.

working on adhack, they changed a few things..

namely, silent install seems to have either moved, or taken a vacation.

Yes, I find that quite annoying when trying to copy and paste a convo and having to close the IM window to get it back to normal.

2 questions:

1) What in the world is this ad-hack version you guys talk about? (I am assuming it is a removal of the annoying ad on the AIM interface... where can I get it?

2) I am running Vista Business & whenever i hit the X button on the new beta AIM, It just moves the screen a little to the right and doesn't actually close it... Bug or is my computer going looney?

Yeah, believe me, I did the installer long enough in AIM 1999-2003, and I don't get why our installer behaves the way it does. Like why do we open up the progress bar in the lower right corner? Do people like that?

    • Gf needed a new Surface and was looking at a Surface Laptop because of the Snapdragon. Seeing as it was a two year old chip she just decided to get a Lenovo Yoga 2 in 1 instead. Personally this Surface Ultra Cassis reminds me a bit of Razor. It would be interesting if it could handle proper gaming and be 17 inch.
    • No idea, frankly, I'm not into minimum requirements gaming, but it would be an interesting test to find out. Also, I just have to point out that it wasn't my intention to downplay the performance of DXVK on Linux or Linux gaming in general (despite my own experience being a bit of a mixed bag). I just thought it would be good to point out that DXVK is not Linux exclusive and that you can benefit from using it even in Windows.
    • Fastfetch 2.64 released bringing new logos and other improvements by David Uzondu Fastfetch, the popular command-line system information tool that developers created as a fast alternative to the classic Neofetch utility, has updated its codebase to version 2.64, bringing experimental scripting power, streamlined compilation options, a smarter logo renderer, and Codec module support. As noted earlier, Fastfetch can now detect hardware-accelerated video codecs across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android through this new Codec module. On Linux and BSD, the utility uses VA-API by default, with a fallback to VDPAU on Nvidia hardware if compiled with libva and libvdpau. Windows users get D3D12VA on Windows 11 or D3D11VA with Media Foundation Transforms on older systems, while macOS relies on VideoToolbox and Android utilizes AMediaCodec. You can manually toggle Vulkan Video via the config file, and the program will report both encoders and decoders unless configured otherwise. Logo support for Quasar, Origami, Origami_small, NixOS2, and BerserkArch also landed in this release. BerserkArch, if you have never heard of it, is a specialized Arch Linux derivative that targets security researchers and power users. This distro comes with an offensive security tool manager, simply called berserk, which allows users to install complex hacking toolkits with single terminal commands. Moving on, Fastfetch now has experimental scripting options for custom formats using Lua or QuickJS. The Lua integration supports versions 5.3 through 5.5, sharing a single interpreter instance across all modules so you can store variables globally. T Alternatively, if you prefer JavaScript, you can use QuickJS-ng version 0.15.0 or newer to evaluate your custom formats with the qjs: prefix. Other changes that version 2.64 brings include native CMake compilation flags to disable specific modules to shrink the final binary size. Users can delete unwanted ASCII logo files directly from the source directory before building to save additional space. The format engine now boasts ANSI-escape awareness, meaning you can center text with the new vertical bar specifier without breaking colored outputs. Haiku users receive preliminary support for boot manager, window manager theme, screen brightness, and other basic properties. Finally, the Linux edition now extracts desktop wallpaper and theme details from the modern COSMIC desktop environment.
