Sony redesigns Euro PS3

Recommended Posts

This is a problem for people who have dead PS2's or PS1's and wanted to get a new console but was waiting for the PS3. I don't see how this will reduce the cost of the PS3 -- That much. All they did was get the old parts and put it into the motherboard. And how cheap are PS1's and PS2's being sold now? Will save them like ?20 MAX. But even then, it doesn't mean the launch price is going to drop, it's just the price in the future what will drop, whenever that will happen.

I for one wanted a PS3 with no ps2 compatibility and lower price.

They got it half right

Lower Price? wheres it say that?

It'll be a lower price for them to manufacture, but we the customers will still have to pay just as much for the console in the shops even if they are doing this. Glad I made the choice of not buying one several months ago.

Lower Price? wheres it say that?

He said half right...he meant PS3 with no PS2 compatibility was the right part.

Although that's actually wrong - the EU PS3 will still be compatible with PS1 and PS2 titles, it just won't have the same success rate as the NA and JPN units. And they'll improve the level of compatibility with firmware updates.

It'll be interesting to see how things are at launch, though.

lol, what a complete over reaction.

If people are refusing to buy / cancelling orders because their new system wont play old games, then why did you put in a preorder for a 400-500 quid console? Why not just go down to your local Game/Gamestation and pick up a used PS2 for ?40. Or better yet, you should have bought one years ago to play PS2 games, instead of waiting for a next generation system to play last generation games.

Sony employs thousands and thousands of workers all over the world, they have been working on this console for at least the past 5 years or so, thats thousands of people doing their seven and a half hours a day, they dont deserve it? Christ man, get over yourself.

This system is going to be great - and you are denying yourself playing all the games that your friends / colleagues / family will be playing, just because your console wont play something you probably completed 5 years ago. AND WITHOUT EVEN SEEING THE COMPATABILITY LISTS YET!!!!

Sorry for the rant, but you are seriously mentally challenged if you cancel over this.

Im going to guess that you are lying out of your backside.

You ever hear the phrase 'the straw that broke the camel's back?'

Sure alone this isn't a big deal, but there's a running history of 'not a big deal' disappointments. There's also no way to know all his friends and colleagues will be playing these games at this point, just as there is no compatibility list yet (which they're saving for launch day for crying out loud, so you know Sony expects it to be fairly short)

Yeah, its a cliche.

Like?

I didnt say all, I just meant that there will probably be someone he knows who has one, who will be playing new great games, while he is pouting over not being able to play last gen games.

just as there is no compatibility list yet (which they're saving for launch day for crying out loud, so you know Sony expects it to be fairly short)

This point has gotten under my skin a bit, everyone would rather know sooner rather than later what will/wont play.

Because when you're paying ?400 to ?500 it's not a lot to expect your existing library to work. This is especially bad because people were lead to believe that the PS3 would have 98% backwards compatibility. If you have hundreds of games it would be a great relief to have them work on the console as you may find it difficult to buy new and expensive games.

There's definitely a case of "The straw that broke the camel's back" here.

Okay, okay.. we all get the point of that side of the story. Yes, it was wrong of Sony to promise full BC (but hey, we're not the only one that broke promise;);) ), but think about what he is actually trying to say on the other side. If you already have a PS2 and are looking to upgrade to a PS3 and find that your hundreds of PS2 games won't work right off the bat.. then why not just have the PS2 on the side and the PS3 as your center piece for the latest stuff? Most of you already have a PS2 anyways and it will insure you can play all those games until additional software updates are released. If you're buying a PS3 for BC alone then you've clearly got the wrong idea. Over reaction is right. Nothing opinionated here, just a bit of common sense suggestions:wacko:o:

I tend to disagree, but Ive said that plenty of times in this thread.

I suppose it depends on how you view new hardware, and what you want to use it for. But you have to admit, that the main purpose of people buying a PS3 is to play PS3 games, or indeed to use it as a blu ray player, or to use its browser capabilities, PSP interoperability etc. I just dont see the point in being upset about it not playing as many PS2 games, on its initial release, as the US/JP counterpart. And yes, I know people will say that they are being ripped off, more money, less capabilities, but I just dont see that aspect as important enough to warrant cancelling preorders, especially as we dont know which games have been cut, and that we have been told that firmware upgrades will extend that lis:/:/

(but hey, we're not the only one that broke promises ;)

If you're referring to Microsoft with that, they never promised full backwards compatibility with the 360. Infact, I'm not sure if they promised backwards compatibility at all, it was more of a bonus.

To be honest, If Sony said they were making the PS3 incompatible with PS3 games, only to change that with incremental updates, I'm sure you (and I mean you specifically) would still find a way defend them. It seems no matter what they do you just can't admit any wrong doing. Do you not think people might have sold their PS2's because they were waiting on the PS3, assuming it would work with all their existing library?

And why are you saying "we're" as if you're part of Sony or something?

So Sony (a hardware company) is having problems with hardware production, removing parts to "reduce costs", not offering full backwards compatibility (AS PROMISED) and yet some people expect them to fix things VIA SOFTWARE UPDATES? Hahahah.

Kick in the nuts for European gamers.

First the highest price and then crippling the console. Oh and I almost forgot the delay.

Not only is it more expensive than the japanese/american counterparts, it even lacks a KEY feature like that one?

IT DOESNT LACK A KEY FEATURE!!!

It has a reduced list of games that are supported, which will be increased icrementally.

You will still be able to play PS2 games, we just dont know which will be supported yet.

This is what I believe. I think that all of this is getting out of hand. I also believe that someone is just talking here just to give an answer for anything that anyone says. Also, I for one didn't play that many games that were PS1 games on my PS2, but for some, they may. Such as my friend that I know, he loves playing on his PS2. He has loads of games... And he said to me that he will be getting a PS3 instead of getting a new PS2 because his current one isn't working all too well. So I guess he won't be too pleased about this... Like many people here.

The world, not just Sony, are "buggering" us over with prices... Just because we are a "rich" country, doesn't mean to say that we should have to pay higher for a product that is cheaper in another country. There are plenty of people that can't afford things like these.

Now, revisiting my first paragraph... I haven't played any PS2 games in awhile personally... And once I have a PS3 (which won't be any time soon seeing as I will be going to Uni soon) I may from time to time want to play a PS2 game. And maybe the game will be supported, maybe it won't. Which is the problem... Yeah yeah, people lie and stuff... But companies shouldn't lie to their customers, because it is a great way of going out of business. And I guess Sony didn't lie, but they did say that they would give full backwards compatible support. Which of course now they are not, for Europe. But, with them releasing over time updates to support more... Which I think they had better... Then I personally don't see too much of a problem with that... As long as in the end it will be good, that is not in the real end where the "PS4" comes out.

But to the point after me writing all that (lol). I think that Sony should be selling the PS3 in Europe for a cheaper price, regardless to the now missing components inside.

I also believe that someone is just talking here just to give an answer for anything that anyone says.

Im going to take that as a shot at me. But surely, thats the reason for a forum, to give an opinion on what people say, to give advice, and to point and laugh at some of the rubbish that people type - the uninformed, OTT, bilge that comes out that either a) isnt true or is b) to get attention.

You raise good points, I would hope that Id commend good information and opinions rather than just noobslapping unjustifiably.

ugh. sony disappoints... again. i'm not going to cancel my pre-order, but this is still damn annoying. sure, i can go out and buy a new PS2 (my current one is broken), but after all those jabs at microsoft and promises that they'd get full backwards compatibility they're now making the backwards compatibility worse? and we're paying a much higher price ($200 more) in the UK, you'd at least expect to get the same, not worse.

in response to the comment about sony doing software emulation, microsoft do use only software emulation for the backwards compatibility. then again, they're far better at software than sony, but sony should be able to make a modest attempt at least.

Isn't this just the version of the console that will eventually become standard all over the world? Sony said they were going to take the PS2 parts out of the PS3 in NA and JP once they got backwards compatibility completed in software. Now it does suck that Europe won't have complete compatibility from day one, but it's not like it will never be there. My guess is that they are trying to get it working asap so they can reduce production cost on the NA and JP consoles, so maybe you guys won't have to wait too long.

I can see why this would be annoying though. I bought my PS2 on launch and then played pretty much only PSOne games on it for almost a year since I didn't own a PSOne and missed out on a lot. It was kind of a drag playing PSOne games on my PS2 due to lack of games, but I had my Dreamcast to help tide me over just like now a lot have their 360s and Wiis to tide them over until more games start coming out, heh.

IT DOESNT LACK A KEY FEATURE!!!

It does indeed lack a key feature. As displayed in NeoNut's post, the first bullet point is: "Full playstation | PS2 backward compatibility from day 1" Of course not including the "expect europe" :p.

So it is indeed a key feature that was stated by Sony. But it may not be... How should I say... A key feature to some people.

Okay, okay.. we all get the point of that side of the story. Full Backward compatibility for one

Cell does not pwn the 360 by 3 times (ill try to find the source for this one, many of you remember the uproar it caused here) Infact it not even proven if cell is any good at all, the 360 cpu seems to be holding its own for now.

360 graphics gpu> ps3 one (dont argue this point)

Delayed World Launch

Even More Delayed Europe Launch

Not to mention the horrible lies we had to swallow before the PS2 launch

heres a quick refresher

Emoction engine which allows toy story graphics

the ability to control nuclear missles

etc..

etc..

Emoction engine which allows toy story graphics

the ability to control nuclear missles

lol I remember that one :p

Backwards compatibility is pretty useful in a consoles early life when there is next to zero decent games out. Nintendo are currently doing well with the VC games shipping every week and is probably the only thing keeping the wii afloat whist more proper games are released. Sony need beating with sticks if the list isn't close to 95% compatibility.

    • I don't hate the new menus, I am not a fan of the lack of features and how they went live when they clearly are not complete. The menu itself presents much better than the previous - but what's lacking (IMO) is: 1) Any kind of automated manipulation such as: "this goes on the new menu because you use this feature more often on this filetype" "this is rarely used and will fall back to the old menu" 2) Any kind of user manipulation such as: "a UI to add/remove/order items to the new menu"
    • The biggest issue in this version of Win 11 context menu, from usability standpoint, is the movable row with basic commands. Think of a car analogy...if You turn the week left the infotainment screen will move right and vice versa. With how it works now Microsoft made something forbidden in designing in any UI, software or hardware. I can't grasp who were the morons within Microsoft suggesting it was a good idea and gave it a green light.
