Nice to see that they are working on Vista issues, but Vista has been out of beta for a while, why couldn't they have had these issues fixed before Vista was released to the public?

Come on now, that is just plain flamebait. Do you want me to list all of the applications with Vista compatibility issues (Hint: MS has way more that Apple)? I suspect vendors were waiting for the final "under the hood" changes to be complete.

Yeah that is the popular excuse we were waiting for this or that.... Thats not really a valid excuse.

iTunes for the most part works great on my Vista Box.

And of course MS will have more incompatibility issues the Apple because they have more then 1 program that runs on Windows. Hell MS has more Mac Programs Then Mac has Windows programs.

Ah man i hate itunes updates, theyre a hassle to do.
Agreed. We really shouldn't have to go through the entire installation process again just to install such a minor update.

So true. As much as I like iTunes, this is something that the guys at Mozilla fixed with the Firefox updates, distribute patches through the updater instead of making us download the program again.

Not only that, but Apple sort of resets your settings because every friggin time it puts QuickTime in my system tray. That thing is evil!

iTunes 7 (all revisions) runs appallingly under XP and Vista. Under XP it would often take up 60-70% CPU for no apparent reason (it wasn't sorting anything in the background), making my whole system quite unresponsive. Now I'm using Vista and it is just as bad - loading up I will often get the blackout bug, it will also hang, spikes the CPU and makes the system less responsive. Then there is the excessive shutdown time and the absurd length of the installer. All it does is play music... Winamp takes but a slight of a second to install, yet iTunes looks likes it's trying to create a cure for cancer judging by the time it takes. And I still don't see why qtask.exe needs to be running - performance is abysmal either way and the functionality of it is pretty minimal.

I love the functionality of iTunes but I despise iTunes 7. If there was an alternative that offered the same interface and same features then I'd move to it, as iTunes has worn out any favour it had previously carried. Songbird looks nice but the development is pretty slow and there are too many little niggles to switch over yet. Any other suggestions?

Easier way to update iTunes:

1. Use 7zip or WinRAR to extract the iTunesSetup.exe file.

2. Delete the AppleUpdate.msi and QuicktimeInstaller.msi files.

3. Restart your computer to make sure no applications are using files iTunes need to update.

4. Run iTunesSetup.exe to update your iTunes.

There, you just updated iTunes without having to update QuickTime.

Since iTunes 7, Apple has included an updater app. It is right in the start menu --> programs --> apple software update. I used it today on my Windows laptop to install 7.1.1 and it worked flawless. And so far (haven't rebooted yet), the dreaded QuickTime tray icon hasn't returned and none of the extra shortcuts either.

Horrible advise. These updates often include lots of stuff QuickTime specific, including security, sound quality, and stability fixes.

What's wrong with the Apple Update program too? I used it today and it worked flawless.

I agree that having to download the 35 MB+ installer files are a pain, but until iTunes loses its market share, Apple won't bother with any other method. They own the market, therefore, people just get used to adopting its standards for how it thinks software installation and updates should be handled.

I'm still ****ed at how they decided that the start menu shortcuts must stay in the start menu against my wishes.

That's the issues with a lot of companies, not just Apple it seems.

This was the same case when XP came out many programs weren't XP ready.

I don't see why it takes them to get on board before launch, these companies play with the OS during beta and other stages of development.. sigh... it's a mystery :p

iTunes is incredibly bitchy to mp3's ripped in any other program but itself (sometimes even cd's I rip in itunes itself) It puts duplicate artists on my ipod, and square symbols next to artist, song name ect.. in the library, the only way to fix it is to use itunes and go through rewriting the info, which took me an hour or so, than I decided to update iTunes and BAM they all reverted so I had to do it again, sometimes it won't even play No other media plays I've ever used has done this to me. it also uses a ridiculous amount of resources.

    • Thanks Microsoft but no, I find both iterations of Outlook terrible nowadays and switched back to Thunderbird at home.
    • Happens to the best of us, bro. 😛
    • Thanks to some of the other recent Windows improvements, I'm optimistic about this one. My quick wishlist would be: perf like the older menu, merge both menus or at the very least, the older menu should be a flyout, not a simulated click to the old menu, and lastly, a customization window to let users move items from one menu to another, so I could bring Send To back to the main menu, and the OneDrive settings to the older.
