Since iTunes 7, Apple has included an updater app. It is right in the start menu --> programs --> apple software update. I used it today on my Windows laptop to install 7.1.1 and it worked flawless. And so far (haven't rebooted yet), the dreaded QuickTime tray icon hasn't returned and none of the extra shortcuts either.

What's wrong with the Apple Update program too? I used it today and it worked flawless.

Yeah I use the Apple Updater too but the problem we mentioned is still there. It downloads the whole application (not patches) and reinstalls them automatically. That's like over 50MB of download for bug fixes. Ridiculious. Just because it works doesn't mean it's good. It's better than us manually downloading and installing the applications for sure, but Apple should provide small patches for these minor updates.

And no, for me, the QuickTime system tray icon comes back at every update as well as the two icons on the desktop for iTunes and QuickTime.

Come on now, that is just plain flamebait. Do you want me to list all of the applications with Vista compatibility issues (Hint: MS has way more that Apple)? I suspect vendors were waiting for the final "under the hood" changes to be complete.
How is that flamebait? I stated a rant against Apple and you yell flamebait? Whatever.
That's the issues with a lot of companies, not just Apple it seems.

This was the same case when XP came out many programs weren't XP ready.

I'm going to argue that this is just Apple. Hardware vendors such as Creative and nVidia have really been sleeping on the job, I was just commenting on Apple since iTunes is just an Apple product.

And I will completely disagree with your second statement. I got a brand new notebook the week XP was released and I never once had a single problem with application/driver support like what I have with Vista. And this is not Microsoft's fault at all, it is lazy companies who are at fault here. They've had plenty of time to get working drivers and applications out, there is no excuse for them.

I keep getting that blackout bug and I have no idea why, I am using the lasted video card drivers and everything and it's really starting to **** me off!!!!! It constantly flashes and I can't do anything. Anyone have any ideas?

Horrible advise. These updates often include lots of stuff QuickTime specific, including security, sound quality, and stability fixes.

You mean advice. Some people don't use QuickTime, instead, use QuickTime alternative. That package only updated iTunes, I was only offering a way of applying the minor iTunes update so people can do it without the QuickTime icon appearing.

I never said there was anything wrong with the Apple Update program. It's actually very well designed for novice users to update their iTunes.

Don't install if you have a G15 keyboard. The button bug that came with 7.1 still hasn't been fixed.

Edit: wow PC_Madness beat me to it by a few minutes =(

Sorry to bump this, but for all who are having this problem,

goto your iTunes folder and delete the iTunesKeyboardCompatibility.dll and create a folder with exactly the same name, stopping iTunes from recreating it.

Should fix the problem. :)
