Sega Confirms Wii NiGHTS For U.S. This Fall

Following a flurry of internet reports and speculation over the past week, Sega of America has confirmed the upcoming release of a new NiGHTS game for the Nintendo Wii, with an expected stateside release window this fall.

While little else is yet known about the title, known as NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Sega has promised "a heightened sense of gliding, spiraling, and looping through seven mystical dream worlds," presumably featuring much of the same aerial platforming style gameplay exhibited by the original, now through the use of the Wii's motion sensitive controls.

According to a number of Japanese reports, the game is being created by SonicTeam USA, with Takashi Iizuka being charged with producing the highly anticipated follow up to the Sega Saturn clasic. Released in 1996, the original told a story of two children who enter a dream world in order to combat demons and prevent the real world from being overrun with the help of the jester-like flying acrobat NiGHTS.

"In 1996, we created the NiGHTS character to achieve a concept of 'being refreshed from being able to fly in the sky'," commented Izuka in a statement made to Japanese press. "11 years later, at last, we have broken our silence. NiGHTS will now fly in a new dream world: new stages, new story, and on the new Wii platform."

can't wait for this :)

but sonicteam's working on it, so i'm a little skeptical. i'm hoping for the best though.

it depends what sonic team they are mentioning there. AM8 The original staff lead by "YU2" or Sega's new guys who did STH for the PS3 and 360.

I'll be worrying about this games quality like crazy until it comes out. I just can't trust sega anymore. They need to get their act together. The 3 different mask concept (mentioned on ign) in particular is horrifying to me. It sounds too much like switching characters in sonic heroes. I detested that clunky game to no end. So any feature that I see resemble it makes me wish sega wasn't in charge of franchises I love. I can only hope that this turns out as good as the original and lacks the glitches, horrible camera, clunky horrible gameplay, poor poor poor production values, etc that have been the staple of sega games. Also, until they reveal the motion controls and prove that they aren't a horrible gimmick I will not be happy. Even if they are creative and great uses of the motion control I still have faith that sega will botch the implementation.

Ack, I sound like I hate sega. I really just want them to try harder and make great games again. As it is right now I kind of wish the gameplay was the same as on the saturn (the same evolutionary approach ssbb appears to be taking).

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
