Vista TCP/IP Limit AutoPatch

Recommended Posts

LOL I'm not aware of a single file sharing application that uses raw sockets... there's no reason to, and they wouldn't work at all on XP SP2 or Vista.

As for the connectoin rate limit - it just means that if your program makes more than ten unsuccessful/uncompleted connections within one second, further connections will have to wait until the next second. There's absolutely no way any perceivable difference is going to be noticed. The application doesn't even know this is happening, and there's certainly on way the user could tell.

I use uTorrent, and I've never had a problem with connection speed. If you think this patch makes a difference, it's just a placebo effect.

As you may have noticed Microsoft still limits your half-open (incomplete/syn packets) connection attempts per second that the system can make. Microsoft Has done this since Windows XP Service Pack 2 to keep your computer from being used by dangerous programs such as Worms that scan the internet to infect more systems and to keep your computer from being a host of a Bot that connects to IRC that accepts commands to launch Distributed Denial Of Service Attacks (DDoS) against other people and companies they do not like. Unfortunately For us and companies, this limit effects our internet by limiting the capability of P2P (Peer 2 Peer) applications like uTorrent, BitTorrent, BitComet, Azureus, BitSpirit, eMule (eDonkey network), Direct Connect, DC++, ApexDC++ , or even P2PTV such as PPLive, PPStream, Sopcast, TVAnts, Gnutella, and many other applications we love to use but cannot take full advantage of.

I have compiled an Auto Patcher to take care of this for you.

read more from the source here

I hope this is usefull to someone with some vista connection issues.

Lol..some ppl are plain idiots...This guy gave itself to the effort to create a patch for those who are interested...and instead of "thanks you's", he receives flames...Are some of you ppl nuts?Dont like it?Think its bad for your security?Dont use it and dont flame him for doing something that may be useful for others!Got a better ideia?Good.Tell us what it is..

Why do people even bother to post on topics such as this the end result is you get pie in your face for being stupid and a few thanks you's sprinkled in for good effect it's a waste of time.

How many threads do we have on the same topic that end up as one big collective shouting match this and the other Vista patch thread should be closed.

Outside of the torrent reason, there is also a more valid area that this limitation effects. For one I have about 400+ RSS and Atom feeds in Firefox and when they go to update it big time effects my network connection performance. I'm sorry but there should be zero reason for Microsoft to limit a users online experience in this way. For one the method MS are using is a BS fix to a much lager problem.

this goes back to what I have said about neowin for a long time you have these group of folks who are in this little clicks most work at some small isp as some small time network person. these people think they know everything there is to know about networks . I had this problem with the blocking your i.p. and how its totally impossible.lol the point is take what they saw with a grain of salt. the patch works beautiful btw thanks.

What MS implemented, doesn't effect half the stuff you guys claim it does.

Doesn't slow down your downloads, doesn't stop you connecting to computers (it will limit how many connections to non-responsive hosts though).

I'm tired of tryign to educate peopel of why they don't need and shouldn't use this patch.

So if you want to be an idiot and compromise your system with this patch, then go ahead.

That doesn't make any sense at all, and has absolutely nothing to do with this "patch." Are you perhaps referring to the HTTP connection limit imposed by the HTTP standard?

Is anyone having trouble running this patch? It gets to the last copy command for me and then spits out an access denied error. I've tried running the .bat file as administrator. I've tried creating an elevated cmd prompt and running all the commands manually. I've tried logging on as administrator and running the .bat file..

Still getting the same error...

wow, have you not downloaded anything via BitTorrent?

the TCP/IP Connection limit seriously hurts connection and download speeds.

any user who doesn't have this patched will get an Event View FULL of warnings that the "TCP/IP half open connection limit has been reached" (I'm not sure of the exact wording, as I haven't seen the error since patching).

Some programs will self limit the half open connections, but all that does is help with issues if you haven't been patched yet.

EDIT:

The WHOLE POINT of Microsoft putting the limit in was to SLOW DOWN MASS CONNECTIONS. It was supposed to be a patch to help combat worms.

However, if you don't have a worm, yet would like to make MASS CONNECTIONS, then the TCP/IP connection limit WILL SLOW YOU DOWN.

I consistantly hit against the upload and download speeds my providers advertise, and what my connection properties show.

When I'm not at my connection limits, I find that the peers are choked.

So how does this tweak help me?

I uses Soulseek and BitTorrent. Never used or needed any patch. Downloads move swiftly with ZERO error messages. XP as well as Vista Home Premium.

you need to look @ my site and enable the administrator username, logon with that, disable UAC then try again, if it does not work, check the %Systemroot%\System32\drivers\ folder, go to it yourself and set yourself as owner and add read write/full permissions if you are still getting the problem

Ionstormicacls I too had that problem.

Simple fix though...

Change This Line:

echo y | cacls %Systemroot%\System32\drivers\tcpip.sys /g "%username%":f

To:

echo y | icacls %Systemroot%\System32\drivers\tcpip.sys /grant %username%:F

Ive been using uTorrent since the very early versions on both xp and vista and have never had to apply one of these patches. It saturates my 4mb connection just fine.

If you get this error 'ERROR: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.'. Try and run the 'Vista_TCPIP_Limit_70000.reg' file in the patch. It seems that in both .bat files, it tries to import 'Vista_TCPIP_Limit.reg' file which does not exists.

This may be fixed in the new patch though.

I'm sorry, but how does this not make sense to you?

If I was sitting on a unpatched XP SP2 or Vista machine, close my Firefox and then reopen it my network performance is degraded.

After my performance has been degraded I can open up my system log and see a shinny new 4226 Event ID error.

This happens each time the large number of feeds I have try to update.

My machine and network are more than capable to handle the large number of feeds I have and I think it unacceptable for my OS to be the limiting factor.

I think you need to stop defending MS on this one and face the fact that it does in fact degrade network performance and that MS is in the wrong on this one.

Like I said, this limitation is a BS work around for a much larger problem.

@Barney, not sure what this has to do with AutoPatcher, we decided a long time ago we would never include it...
