I just built myself a new pc, well about 3 weeks ago and it has been working just fine. However today i was playing a game and it closed the game and then shut itself off and i couldnt get it started again. Once i pressed the power button the fans went round but no beep from the motherboard and it just restarted. Sometimes there was a beep but it would just turn off soon after this. Now all of a sudden its working again and im writting this post. What could be the causes of it shutting down and not turning on? Ill post specs in a minute, wanna get this posted before it happens again.

OS : Vista Home Premium 64bit

Hardware:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI Socket 775

Western Digital WD2500KS 250GB

EVGA 8800GTS 320MB GDDR3

OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2-667MHz

Hiper Black 670W Type-M PSU

Thanks

I have not updated BIOS and dont think i ever would. I got some info from the event viewer:

"The previous system shutdown at 09:34:03 on 14/05/2007 was unexpected."

Now im not to sure what the hell that means, if anything, but it might mean something to someone.

I also have this as an error in event viewer - But this was posted when i logged on succesfully to the computer, maybe it causes the problem??:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

StarOpen

Have yo used the windows vista t try find the problem here?

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

StarOpen

This allmost says that it is a drive problem. Off that detials it is not possible to find out exactally what is the problem. Has this only does it once? At the end of the day you may be running a driver that is not 100% vista compatable. If this is doing it often i would first un-plug anything that is not needed, hardware, printers etc then you can see if it still does it then.

Steven

The problem has just happened again but i have noticed that windows vista actually shuts itself down rather than crashing, if it was s disk problem i would have thought it would crash?

edit

And also the fact that it turns on sometimes and gets to different points before it resets confuses me??

Here is an update to the situation.

I have tried removing the battery to reset the motherboard, this has done just that but hasnt fixed the problem.

I have tried switching memory modules.

I have tried unplugging the harddrive.

Ensuring all the cables are plugged in.

All of this without success. The error seems to follow a trend, it will try and start 4 times, on the 4th time the motherboard beeps as it does when starting up but then it turns off. Also which is something slightly concerning is it seems to have a mind of it own, if its plugged in it will try and start itself and when the power is off at the mains it still trys, so the lights come on for a split second. Sometimes when the computer is left for a while and i try and start it up it will come on and work for a few minutes before restarting. I have checked temperatures in BIOS, all around 25c, aswell as the system info, everything that should be there is there.

Any suggestions?

Try re-seating the cpu, and then check the gpu - either one may be getting too hot, or may not be getting proper contact.

The CPU temp is stable at 25c which i have always considered is a good temperature for a processor?

The fan on the graphics card only starts spining when the motherboard beebs and i assume that is normal, i wouldnt know, i havnt had a graphics card with a bad before.

Does it happen when you start the PC in safe mode? Have you installed any new software recently? Have you tried a system restore?

To my knowledge i have not installed any new software, includes updates. At first i thought it might be due to my TV card but i have removed this and still have the same problem. I cant get the system past the beep from the motherboard at the moment without it restarting. If it ever gets past that i dont think i would have time to do a system restore.

I know that the second post stated that it was a quality PSU, but it is suspect of either a bad PSU not supplying enough power (perhaps a bad unit at factory which slipped through testing), mainboard, which would might not be grounded properly to the case, a mismatched bios setting to the CPU, or incompatible hardware with the mainboard.

The simple fact that it doesn't power up all the time, but after a few times, tells me it is not the OS, rather a hardware issue, so I would remove that from your checklist of things to go through.

I was leaning towards a PSU or Mainboard failure just because everything else seems to be doing what its supposed to do and changing them/removing them doesnt solve the problem.

The mainboard itself has a blue light along the bottom which is always on if its plugged into the mains, would this indicated that the mainboard is working correctly?

No, that's just a standby power light, I believe.

I would agree; my guess is that either your motherboard or your power supply is to blame.

You know, even quality products can be lemons sometimes.

Is there any way you could get another PSU to test with?

Unfortunelty not, i have e-mailed the people i purchased the components from to see what they say but i can see me having to send it back. Anyway, thanks for all your help, if anyone else reads this and has a suggestion, even if its something already been said, please put it down so i can forward it to the company.

This has happened to me to while playing a game also. It will go for awhile then for no reason in the game it will stop and restart my computer it doesnt have issues starting back up but it restarts when playing that game. It gets tiresome to save your game every 2 minutes.

Did you find a way to fix this problem or a cause for it?

Comment:

Just found this in event viewer. Any ideas?

Edit

I have tried hunting around on Microsofts support site but have found nothing :(

I just went out and got a new PSU and tried it out, same problem is still happening. Im not even sure its a harware error form what i posted previously.

The PC will turn on and work if you leave it for a while but would then restart after anything from 5-40 minutes. I tried turning it on and off straight away after logging into windows and it wouldnt boot up. This is getting very annoying andfrustrating now.

Thanks
