Awesome guide for Noobies to install a LAMPP server!

So with the latest release Ubuntu Linux I set about moving my PHP web sites from my Windows 2003 Server to a LAMPP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP Python) server. I tell you I have succeeded in both the improved performance of Linux while retaining my drug like addiction to easy to use GUIs."

I was under the impression that installing things via GUI was not having to type commands.

Me too. I've come to realise in my few days of using Ubuntu, that using the terminal is more or less inevitable unless you just use it as it is "out-of-the-box".

Enabling root allows to avoid the terminal on at least 2 or 3 steps. I just don't understand why everyone in the Linux community thinks it is such a sin!

Not a "sin". An "unnecessary security liability".

Years ago, 95% of the worlds desktop Operating Systems ran as root/admin. Today, Microsoft is trying to turn that around with Vista. It is more secure, therefore more sensible - especially on a server.
