Starcraft 2 - Official!

What is Starcraft?

Allot of kids were talkin about this game back in Jr. High, I just didn't seem to care I guess.

Read about it here. I think it's one of the best RTS games in existence.

Honestly, I think Starcraft set the standard. I mean, seriously, even aspects of CnC are starting to mimic the old Starcraft games. The only true failure from my standpoint, was Ghost. I'm not sure what the hell they were thinking releasing that game. What a complete failure.

It probably would have been quite a good game, even more so now with todays processing power and consoles. From a sales perspective even the ill-favoured CNC FPS turned a profit, so a stargate one which probably would have been planned better could have done quite well. Depending on how the new CNC team based fps goes, who knows maybe ghost will get a second coming.

For a second I wasn't sure if this was a joke, but then I looked what year we are today. Time sure goes fast :pinch:

Actually yeah, I remember playing Starcraft on my first computer which was a 486 with 48MB ram (32MB + 16MB Dimms ). The whole thing lagged after sending 2 carriers to the attack but it was worth it!

Um... Ghost was never released.

You're right, sorry, it wasn't released, but the when my friends and myself got the beta kits in the mail.... we were all ****ed. Blizzard promised FPS, and we got some kind of lame 3PS / sideview game. And the character was a female... nothing against chicks, but when you make a game like that, you've gotta have more than one option. Female and Male characters...

Damn! How did this thread die? Anyway, the StarCraft II site has been updated with new screenshots, an interesting battle report, and a vote for two different types of Dark Templar (old vs. new).

Here are some things to check out:

Still not interested? Well, let me tease you with this image.

Judging from the screenshots, it looks like the "super units" are back. If I remember correctly, Blizzard scrapped the idea when it was first introduced.

it's too bad they took Blackhole out though. It'd be too good for the Mothership to send everything into the void.

Darn, that sucks. That was probably the coolest Protoss Mothership ability.

this idea might be cool if everything is rightly balanced.

True, but that could prove quite difficult. I think Blizzard scrapped the idea because of balancing issues. And only 1 player per race can have a super unit in a game. At least that's the way it was when the super units were first introduced. However, it seems to have changed. The screenshot in my previous post shows 2 Terran Thors.

Anyway, have you guys voted yet? I went with the Zer'atai tribe of dark templar simply because it's "newer". Plus, they wield dual scythes as opposed to a single scythe for the Lenassa tribe of dark templar (original StarCraft).

Darn, that sucks. That was probably the coolest Protoss Mothership ability.

yeah and probably is. But think about it, it's just waay too powerfull. It's like the protoss rift warp ability, warps a group of allies to another location.

THe battle reports are cool but the announcers are annoying o_O

What's more annoying is how long it's taking blizzard to release the game. These battle reports are just teases...it's like a really hot girl that just flirts with you but you want way more but she just flirts and flirts for two years cause she can tell you want it so badly...in other words, blizzard is a c**k tease! lol

Yeah!

I think there's a small chance that it could be released this year. If not, then I guess we can expect it to be released sometime in Q2/Q3 2010. After all, the other two campaigns (Protoss & Zerg) will each take a year to be released after the game. That's right, a year. That means we won't be seeing those campaigns until 2011, at the earliest.

    • I think the car analogy is more this: Left hand drive, basic commands on the left side of the infotainment screen. Right hand drive, basic commands on the right side of the infotainment screen. Granted, you're not swapping between the two often so it's doesn't really work. But it's to do with the proximity of you (your mouse, or the driver) to the controls.
    • I mean, the old one was broken and so stupidly complex for many users, so I don't see that as a feasible option. A context menu needs to be simple to use, and for me the Windows 11 style actually worked really well for me, and many others. I used to have to scroll the damn context menu just to get to "file properties" in Windows 10. That was not a good experience, and I'm sure you'd agree. What they're trying to do is make it the best of both worlds, as clearly you'd prefer the Win10 style. I'm curious how they're going to do this.
    • The "Show more options" has its place, as does the simpler context menu, but it should perhaps be a separate fly-out rather than relaunching the entire, old context menu. The old context menu was getting absurd in Windows 10. Often I'd have to make the context menu scroll just to get to "File properties" on my old laptop. Even without much installed, the amount of items was just too much. It's a context menu, not a "do all" menu. Making it configurable is fraught with challenges too, so I'm interested to see how Microsoft tackles this one.
    • I don't hate the new menus, I am not a fan of the lack of features and how they went live when they clearly are not complete. The menu itself presents much better than the previous - but what's lacking (IMO) is: 1) Any kind of automated manipulation such as: "this goes on the new menu because you use this feature more often on this filetype" "this is rarely used and will fall back to the old menu" 2) Any kind of user manipulation such as: "a UI to add/remove/order items to the new menu"
