No up-sized PS3 for Australia: Sony

Tuesday May 22, 01:57 PM

Sony has created an up-sized version of its PlayStation 3 console for the South Korean market, but says it has no plans to launch the larger model in Australia or elsewhere.

The electronic groups on Monday announced on its South Korean website that it would release an 80 gigabyte version of the system on June 16, 20GB larger than the standard unit available in most other markets.

In March, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) launched its 60GB version of the console in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

It had released both 20GB and 60GB systems in Japan and the US in November last year but has since announced plans to cease production of the 20GB in the US.

The company said it had created a larger hard drive to cater for the high amount of data traffic to Korean homes, thanks for the nation's very fast internet speeds.

The PS3 works as a video game console and Blu-ray high definition DVD player.

Users can also connect to Sony's PlayStation Network through broadband connections to compete against other users online, download games and make online purchases.

There are no plans to launch the 80GB device in any markets outside of Korea at this stage.

SCE's Australian spokesman, Adrian Christie, said there was unlikely to be any local version of the larger system.

"We see the PlayStation 3 as a computer entertainment system that will have different skews or different product offerings where relevant," Mr Christie said.

"The announcement is only relevant to Korea at this point and doesn't bear a rating here but they identify a need for the application there."

Korea has one of the highest broadband penetration rates in the world with internet speeds reaching up to 100 megabits per second in many households.

However, Australia continues to lag other developed nations in the race to build a highspeed internet network to the nation's homes.

"Korea has some really good networks so they're obviously going to be using their download features more so than where there are restrictions on broadband speeds," he said.

Like the European and Australasian PS3 units - which use the PAL television format - the Korean PS3 will have limited backward compatibility for older PlayStation 2 titles compared with the US and Japanese models.

It will sell in Korea for 518,000 won ($A680), well below the Australian price of $999.

In March, Microsoft announced plans to increase the hard drive capacity in its Xbox 360 console by six times to 120GB to make way for increased streams of data content.

Doesn't seem fair, not only do they [south Koreans] get a PS3 with a bigger HDD, but it's cheaper too! :hmmm:

Wow those Koreans sure do have some fast connections, if only we had that kind of speed.

Wouldn't be any point in realising it in any other places that already have the 60GB version because it is so easy to put in your own hdd that is larger than 80GB, it just isn't worth it.
