Windows Desktop Search 3.01

Recommended Posts

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.01 is a minor update to Windows Desktop Search 3.0 that adds: support for indexing UNC files, additional support for enterprise deployment, and stability improvements. WDS 3.01 installs on Windows XP and Window Server 2003, but is not needed for Windows Vista since the WDS component is already included in Vista. Windows Desktop Search 3.01 helps you to find, preview, and use your documents, e-mail, music, photos, and other items. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is a Windows service that is also used by applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to index application content and deliver instant results when searching within that application.

If you choose to install and use Windows Desktop Search, you can search for e-mail, documents and other files located on your computer. No information about the files on your computer will be sent to Microsoft as part of this process. Instead, Windows Desktop Search will index the content of your computer and store the index file on your computer. You can customize Windows Desktop Search to index only specified folders on your computer. Windows Desktop search will not store copies of e-mail or documents after they are deleted.

Note WDS 3.01 can be installed as a new install or as an upgrade from 02.05.xxxx, 02.06.xxxx or 03.00.0000. On an upgrade from 03.00.0000, you will not need to rebuild your index.

This download package includes the Update.exe, ADM File and Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks.

After you install these items, you may have to restart your computer

I checked other links. You even called the post Windows Desktop Search 3.01, 2/20/2007 which was a big hint.

mmmm fair enough, sorry I messed up the date from another clipboard copy. But the downloads are updated today.

Yeah, the files were updated today, so it's valid news. However, this puzzles me:

WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-V301-Srv2K3_XP-x64-enu.exe - 8.2 MB

WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-V301-Srv2K3_XP-x64-ENU.MSI - 8.3 MB

Both are available on the x64 pages. There doesn't seem to be a note about which one is newer.

I think both are the same? only different installing techniques, I heard some businesses only allow MSI installation packages to control what software should be installed on clients.

Can you correct the date please in the title description? Thanks Slimy.

You should be able to edit your first post, and should be able to edit the title?

If only Neowin accepts international credit cards :pinch:

/offtopic.

I've reported to a moderator to edit the date.

Yeah I think the only news is that it's now available in MSI form, for enterprises that want to deploy via that mechanism.

Probably not newsworthy...

I wish Microsoft would put simple things like that on there download site. All we know is - oh new date, must be SOMETHING new. Microsoft never tells us what. Why is that?

    • Hello, Version 19 of ESET's consumer offerings are 64-bit only. The 32-bit installers are for Version 18, which were announced in this Neowin article. In addition to ESET NOD32 Antivirus, ESET Internet Security, ESET Smart Security Premium, and ESET Security Ultimate, both ESET Safe Server and ESET Small Business Security v19.1.14.0 have been released as well. • I can name 10x that on why not to switch.... It's funny outlook/office are going towards web app wrappers, and then MS is now preaching native apps again.... ugh can we just pick a lane and stay in it
    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
