[Windows XP SP2] Windows Update "embedded" inside Windows Up

I've had this problem since just after a fresh install of Windows XP (Pro) SP2 and updating everything through Windows Update a couple of days ago. I was wondering if anybody has run into this problem before, and if anybody has found a fix. At first, it looks normal.

However, when I try clicking on Windows Update Home or if I choose to try installing or changing categories (Critical, Optional, etc.), it embeds another Windows Update inside. The strange thing is that once it is "embedded", I can try to install things, but it never gets past the "Checking for the latest updates to your computer..." page in the embedded part. Although I can see what categories have updates once it loads, I can't select anything because IE is frozen at the Checking... page. I have to force IE to quit through Task Manager. Normally, I wouldn't have Automatic Updates turned on, but that is the only thing that lets me get updates other than Office Update. Neither Windows Update nor Microsoft Update worked for me, so I removed Microsoft Update. This is actually the reason why I reinstalled in the first place.

Has anybody run into this problem at all, even if it occurred in another version of Windows?

I had the same problem. I ended up formatting and moving to Vista Ultimate so im sorry I cant offer any real help. Try clearing your ie cache and deleting anything in the \WINDOWS\SoftwareDistrobution\Downloads folder. If that doesnt work try deleting the Microsoft Update ActiveX file and try running again.

I think it might have something to do with the 100% CPU utilization problem with Windows/Microsoft Update. THere is an update that fixes this problem for some PC's.

      Thanks free chatgpt. The issue is, with most browsers, is you shouldn't need tools to remove anything. It is the whole point of extensions. The only browser so far to man up and be honest that it needs money to function is Brave Origin. Don't like the monetisation and code bloat, have a clean browser for a one off $ charge. Firefox used to be that, but now it is a code bloat browser, hiding AI.
