Host File error prevent me from logging in MSN.

I am asking this for my friend. She cannot connect to msn due to the host file error.

You might wanan remove the email add from the window!

Edit: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Open the "hosts" file with notepad.

Remove the line relating to msn and the number e.g.

127.0.0.1 msn.com

Edit2: Probably has something to do with it being a beta version too, is it 8.5? if it is tell her to go back to an earlier version..

Why did you tell her to install 8.5 if its still buggy as hell?.. also Make sure to check the XP firewall settings are not blocking the connection.

Who cares what version it is?? It seems clear the software is telling you their are MSN related entries in your host file, remove them if your having issue connecting - its that freaking simple..

Shoot looks like the software even offered to remove them for you ;)

Unless "YOUR" doing something specific - there should be nothing in your host file except for the 127.0.0.1 localhost entry

An surely not anything for MSN, unless it was pointing to some beta sites??

Post up your host file if you have questions about the entries in it.

The error message point exactly to (what it believes is the) cuase of the error is. Heck it even gives you an option to clean it up.

But you can look manually by checking your HOSTS file - and only keep the localhost entry (assuming you have no need for other entries - in which case you'd already know this).

Open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts in Wordpad.

Edit out anything besides the text below and save

Try updating the time/date settings on your computer. I had the same problem, but when I did that it went away.

Having a large HOSTS file can do more harm than good. Personally, I thought it made my computer more secure but then it started spiking the CPU usage to 100% constantly and made it unuseable at times. I had to empty it out to make the computer stable again.

Very Simple Method Compared To All Yours.

I Did try them and for some reason saving the host file wasnt easy as it kept making me save it as some sort of .txt file so it literally took no effect to my host files.

NOW!! im not sure if you get it on older internet Explorer's, i personally detest IE, but as soon as my retarded mother installed it on our com i couldnt sign into MSN cause of hosts files. Was Simply fixed with changing a few advanced settings and wa-lah! it fixed.

Stuffed up again just this morning and after using a few techniques i thought maybe reverting to original settings would give me a fresh start at the problem so i Did reset IE settings.

You do this by going into the Internet options, the last tab which i believe is "Advanced" and at the bottom of the window should be a button saying "Reset..." it basically turns everything back to stock settings.

NOW! i got curious as to wether just this would help, so I Tried MSN again and low and behold it worked! so hope thats another method if those others dont work for you :)

Again with this thread that was clearly closed years ago -- the error was CLEAR, entries in your host file..

The time and date had nothing to do with it back in 2007 when it was first suggested.. Now you join the forum and the first thing you do is write a nonsense reply to thread from 2007?? WTF -- and yeah I hate to bump it again.. Maybe a mod will just close it now.
