Apple's going to make people pay an obscene amount of money?

$129 barely buys a good pair of jeans. If you consider that an obscene amount of money then maybe it's time to ask for a raise. Even kids flipping burgers at McDonalds will make that in a weekend.

for an operating system that's not a whole heck of a lot different than Tiger?

If you want substantial changes every few months then go play with Linux. A relatively stable user experience is a feature for modern operating systems. Many people simply have no interest in radical changes to their workflow.

Those screen shots demonstrate well that the new Aqua (as far as we can still speak of "Aqua") still requires a lot of tweaking. The Menu Extras icons for example lack transparency, and the alignment of the arrows on navigational buttons like the ones of the Finder are way off.

Wow, that menu bar could have been soooo much better if they blurred it... But I can see all the kids bashing Leopard saying "ZOMG ITS A TOTAL VISTA RIPOFF HOW DARE THEY ZOMG" but then again they're probably right  lol

Yes, because it's not like the Dock (which resembles the Windows taskbar much more than the Menu Bar does) hasn't had transparency for ages now. ;) :p

I dont see it that way. Apple had every right to copy microsoft. MS coppied apple, so that opened the door for apple to do the same. eirther way, leopard does look nice. (Y)

You forget one important point, and it really disappoints me. Steve specifically mentioned that we don't just get OS X basic with $129, but we also get the Premium, Business and Ultimate editions all on the same DVD!!!!!! :) :) How much better can it get than that?

I think most of us were expecting more from the top secret features and Apple has to be careful with this in the future. But, how much "change" is really necessary? Do we want to wait 5 years for each OS like MS does and pay more money? I was hoping for a way better Finder. But coverflow (assuming fast on 1.8 single G5) and the UI tweaks might be enough.

Why does every revision of an OS need a completely different GUI for people to see that it has been updated?!

Think Secret has some new screenshots of the WWDC Leopard build: http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a466/

I'm public enemy number one with the new UI

But I must say. I like the screenshots (Y)

I fear...the inner fanboy is taking over. :|

Reading through the comments, it's clear Mac fanatics will praise Apple regardless of what Apple actually delivers.

Vista was criticised for ripping off OSX by the Mac fanatics, and for just being a pretty new UI. This was despite features such as gadgets turning up in Longhorn builds long before Apple got around to ripping off Konfabulator.

So now, somebody suggests Apple may be ripping off Microsoft. So what does some guy say? "Apple had every right to copy microsoft. MS coppied apple, so that opened the door for apple to do the same."

Unbelievable. Did guys like him extend the same courtesy to Microsoft when they were (wrongly) accused of ripping off Dashboard? I'd guess not.

By the way, I use both Vista and OSX.

I was refering to both as even. i'm on both sides. i like apple and MS.

Its true. Microsoft copied apple, but made their things their own. so apple had the right to do the same.

I agree is looks rushed. I think the icon doesnt look that good because if the poor use of lighting effects. With better lighting effect it would look better IMO
I wonder how the UI would look, if each icon was a 3D object (a plane/rectangle) that had per-pixel lighting, and stuff like normal maps and shaders?

Dynamically changing shadows in the icons would look nice, and magnifying glasses could really work, etc.

That's a job for a bored programmer over a weekend though.

Good, then I hope you also give full consent to Microsoft ripping off Leopard with its next OS. After all, now that Apple has copied Vista, Microsoft is allowed to copy Leopard again.

hey like i said, i'm not bashing apple nor ms.

enough with these attacks please. Someone can't say their opinions with out someone bashing them. How would you fell if someone bashes your comments?

you people need to chill. this is an internet forum. one persons opinion wont change what will really happen.

I'd describe myself as an Apple fanboy. But when I saw the new desktop (transparent menu bar & their choice of wallpaper) I thought it was made to look Vista-ish as a joke. And that they we're then going to reveal the 'real new desktop'.

Apple usually has a dig at Windows for copying OS X & their delays releasing the OS, but I think they need to give it a rest with what's going on there lately.

I gave the leaves wallpaper a try but it's way too busy & imposing. Nothing I place on the desktop stands out enough.

I guess the idea is that you use stacks & don't place anything on the desktop? But I still think they could have chosen a much nicer image (that doesn't make me think Vista) to use as their flagship for the desktop.

Apple still have up to 4 months before releasing a final build of Leopard. I'm guessing a few things will be changed by then.

We can only hope so, I know the later tiger builds had nothing new in it other than the Aqua Wallpapers up until it was released.

1. Dashboard is not a Konfabulator rip-off. It's a reincarnation of the Macintosh desk accessories (1984).

2. The Dock first appeared in NeXTStep (late 80's), so it's hard to consider it a rip-off of the Windows 95 taskbar.

3. Apple has been using transparency since Mac OS X Public Beta (2000). Microsoft introduced transparency in the Longhorn betas, which - no matter how you look at it - came after that.

The problem is most people (even on Neowin) don't know that. Hence, they consider Apple a copycat.

I really have no idea why you keep bring this up. You do realize that it's perfectly possible to change the default desktop picture as easily as it is today on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger? Right now you act as if Apple hard-coded the thing into the OS. :/

Like I, among others, mentioned before, during the Mac OS X Tiger betas Apple didn't include a new Aqua desktop until only a few builds before GM.

10.1 was so ugly... Seems the Mail icon has never seen an update :/

The Mail icon changed when Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger was released. Not a gigantic change, but a nice tweak nonetheless.

I'd like to see a nice Aqua version of the NeXTStep file browser though.

It's basically just Column view in the Finder, other than not having the "breadcrumb" bar above the other folders (which you don't need in the Finder since you can scroll left and right through the columns, which you couldn't do in the NeXT file browser). In 10.2 and earlier, Finder was even more like the NeXT version since it had the favorites at the top instead of at the left as in the current version (shown below).

It just doesn't show off OS X in a good light to me. The current default desktop shows off OS X really well & still looks great (to me) even after a few years. I'll just change it if it remains the default. I guess I'm disappointed because the Tiger desktop has been my preferred one for so long I was hoping for a new one along similar lines. Maybe I'll grow to like it, I dunno?

I hope so.

I for one, find wallpapers that feature plants/a plant/leaves/not-too-busy wet greenery, quite soothing.

I do like wallpapers featuring plants, leaves etc. in general. It's just the one they chose.

    • This is a none story - these low volume Chinese models will always get new experimental features first because Apple and Samsung can't produce them in huge volume to meet demand.
    • Nvidia GeForce NOW gains support for Dark Scrolls, Empulse, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The final update of June for Nvidia's cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is now available, and it is touting support for six more games. The company is also drawing subscriber attention towards the summer sales kicking off across stores, so they can stock up on more cloud-supported titles. Of course, the Steam Summer Sale is the biggest promotion, which is kicking off later today. "Supported Steam games can be streamed across devices with GeForce NOW, making it easy to buy a game once, keep progress synced and pick up where the gameplay left off on PCs, Macs, handheld devices, phones, TVs and more," says the company. "In other words, the Steam Summer Sale brings the deals; GeForce NOW adds the flexibility." Don't forget that the GeForce NOW summer sale is still active as well. This limited-time offer drops the 12-month Performance membership from $99.99 to $64.99, saving members $35. At the same time, the 12-month Ultimate membership is currently going for $129.99, dropping the price by $70 from the original $199.99. Here are the games joining GeForce NOW's supported list this week: Dark Scrolls (New release on Steam, available June 22) SAND: Raiders of Sophie (New release on Steam, available June 22) Deer & Boy (New release on Steam, available June 23) EMPULSE (New release on Steam, available June 24) The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (Steam) FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves (Steam) With the June expansions coming to an end, Nvidia should be announcing its July GeForce NOW plans next week. Keep in mind that, unlike subscription services like Game Pass or EA Play, a copy of a game must be owned by the GeForce NOW member (or at least have a license via PC Game Pass) to start playing via Nvidia's cloud servers. There is also a limit to how many hours subscribers can use the service per month.
