Quillz
Just a side question, are any of you developers for Leopard? I'm not a professional or even good developer, but I've played around with Xcode and Interface Builder. I guess that makes me a "hobbyist." .Neo
So I could theoretically install Leopard to an external hard drive and boot from it (even though it'd be very slow?) This is good to hear, since I'm not big on FireWire. What's wrong with Firewire? Quillz
What's wrong with Firewire? I don't have FireWire hard drive or cable, I'd rather not spend the money on it when I have no need for FireWire, USB 2 is fine for me, and all my plug-and-play devices are USB. osirisX
Some other Leopard stuff: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=54912 1. Dictionary can now search Wikipedia. 2. Middle clicking now works in Safari. 3. When you choose to rename file, only the filename without extension is selected. 4. You can type "exit" in Terminal to close the window. I don't really care about the first and last new additions, but the third option will really come in handy. I've ruined countless because I kept accidentally deleting the file extension and forgetting what file type it was to begin with. Currently, middle clicking on my Mighty Mouse is set to activate Spotlight. Will middle-clicking in Safari override this behavior by default, or do I have to change something in System Preferences? Tech_Dude_5000
Ewwww! It ruined my blue day, where's my barf bag that I rarely use! thats real mature  if your gonna bash apple., then dont come in here. If your a even person, like me, who likes both apple and MS then fine, but other wise dont do any bashing. :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/566595-apples-new-gui/page/20/#findComment-588647122 Share on other sites
.Neo
I was looking at the iPhone overview video the other day, and I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that Apple didn't go for a more or less same UI style in Mac OS X Leopard. Of course some elements have to be changed to make it more suitable for desktop OS usage and default windows definitively shouldn't use that weird blue shade, but overal I'm positive Apple could have done something amazing with it. I don't have FireWire hard drive or cable, I'd rather not spend the money on it when I have no need for FireWire, USB 2 is fine for me, and all my plug-and-play devices are USB. I thought you meant that there's something wrong with Firewire itself. Which I wouldn't mind hearing as I'm planning to buy one. :p I don't really care about the first and last new additions, but the third option will really come in handy. You'll have to set it to "Button 3" as such: Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/566595-apples-new-gui/page/20/#findComment-588647286 Share on other sites
osirisX
I'm glad they went with the iTunes 7 look. I like how the buttons are more tactile. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/566595-apples-new-gui/page/20/#findComment-588647374 Share on other sites

You should see the Folders in Motion. They look identical to the ones in Leopard. I've ruined countless because I kept accidentally deleting the file extension and forgetting what file type it was to begin with. Yea, renaming file names without the extension is really handy. Much better than before. I thought you meant that there's something wrong with Firewire itself. Which I wouldn't mind hearing as I'm planning to buy one. :p Firewire is good :) I have a FW backup HD & it's fast (I have FW 400, not 800). So I reckon FW 800 must be really good. I've always found file transfers over FW to be faster on a Mac when compared to USB - even FW 400 beats the pants off of USB; 800 obviously is simply a cut further above :). And, price differences on external drives with 800 v. the prices of those with 400 are always shrinking, too. FOOOD
Yea, I read that in theory USB 2 is faster, but when used FW is always faster. I usually buy FW/USB caddies & put my old HDs in them. I see you can now get FW 800 & USB/FW 400/FW 800 caddies (All three outputs in the same caddy). Vice
Can someone show me a screenshot of the Aperture and Motion folders please. Sure. These are all the icons from Motion. The one that most looks like the new Leopard folder icon is at the bottom left. osirisX
So it does. Thanks for that. I like how the Leopard icons have been optimized for 16 px. Looks so much better in columns view, which I use all the time. Plus isn't it the case that USB 2.0 requires processing power from your Mac/PC whereas a Firewire device has it's own build-in chip to handle that? Firewire transfers in a constant stream, so it's preferred for streaming video from a DV camera or whatnot. USB transfers in bursts. I find on my G5 that OSX slows down using USB2 transfer. So I have a dual-HDD FW enclosure and a FW burner... works great! cosine
Got it down to 4GB while keeping all key OS stuff, playing with it. Transparency still looks retarded. There's no option to turn it off. New dock still seems bulky even at about 2/3 of the default size. Edit: Uh, the new Front Row is cool, I guess. Edit edit: Transparency looks horrendous with certain wallpapers, same with the dock. Certain colors look real bad with the effect the menubar is applying. Light wallpapers cause the dock base to more or less get "lost". Dark wallpapers seem to be your best bet here. Never had that problem using Firewire with my iPod 4g. I hate that Apple got rid of it. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/566595-apples-new-gui/page/20/#findComment-588647714 Share on other sites
PyX
Tried Leopard... my thoughts on it (btw, I was running it on an external HD) : The 3D Dock : Not really nice with fullscreen windows... then again maybe this is just a habit that my eyes don't have The transparent menu at the top : Really nice sometimes... but I'd still add an option to turn the transparency off The stability : Ok, Finder has crashed twice, but restarted without me noticing (or almost!) so it wasn't a big deal really. The graphics are a bit slow sometimes. Finder : Coverflow doesn't work that well in the Finder with a resolution for a 24", 1024x1024 icons would be appreciated. Dashboard : no longer has the small glowing dot at the bottom to say it's open. why? Stacks : Really nice! Some bugs here and there, but all in all, I think it's a really solid release. If it's really feature complete (why wouldn't it be?), the released product has no reason not to be stable. There's at least 3 whole months of bug hunting and bug fixing, which I think is a good deadline.
