[NHL] Free agent season begins July 1st

No chance Shanahan remains in New York now. The Rags have near $42M in cap space taken up with 15 players, not to mention Lundqvist is RFA and needs to be re-signed. No way Shanny returns to NYR.

Ryan Smyth has signed a 5 year, $31.25M contract with the Colorado Avalanche.

All I can say for Oilers fans is...ouch.

Hell yeah!!! I was hoping the avs were going to sign a big name free agent :D

lol colorado... very nice!

i like what Philly and Pittsburgh has done with their team

i hate the habs, specifically gainey. You give hamrlik 5.5 million and you can't throw souray 6? wow, what a gm we have

Would you rather have Bouillon and Dandenault as our 2nd pairing? I sure as hell wouldn't. I'd rather overpay for a #2/3 defenseman than have those 2 clowns as the #3 and 4 guys.

why pay Souray 6M? So he can put up a -30 again? The guy was a pylon in the defensive zone. One of the bigger guys in the league who barely used his body.

I'm sick of watching highlight real goals where Souray gets burned.

After Gomez, Briere and Ryan Smyth (Shanahan and Elias last season) turned down more money from the Habs to sign elsewhere for cheaper, it was evident that UFAs do not want to play in Montreal because of taxes, the media circus, french language and irrational fans who boo their players for every minute mistake. Be glad that we actually landed a player. I'd be ###### my pants if we started the season with Bouillon as our #3 defenseman behind Markov and Komisarek. Hamrlik isn't bad at all and can hold his own in the defensive zone. Something which Souray was never able to do.

48 of his 64 points came on the powerplay which isn't going to help his +/-

Before last year he was a career +1 so that would suggest that Montreal simply overused and/or under-supported him last year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see his +/- rebound with whatever team he ends up with.

It probably would, but it doesn't help the fact that Souray is a pylon in the defensive zone. I'm sure a lot of his pluses that don't get counted for on the PP would be negated by GA on the PK anyways. And Markov & Komisarek put up respectable +/- and played more minutes. He's a one trick pony. If you're looking for PP goals, then Souray is your man. Just don't expect much defense out of him. Oh, the team that signs Souray should also look forward to a lot of PKs for his stupid penalties. He turned down $5.5M from Montreal, so anyone else looking to pay $6M for a PP specialist who can't QB the PP, Souray is you're man.

you are right, montreal has had a terrible defensive team for years, yeah souray isn't great at defense but it's not like it just his fault the habs give up 30+ shots a game.

to me6 million dollars is worth the best PP in the league

    • Bluesky COO warns social media regulations could destroy competition from small startups by Paul Hill Fears that increasing government control of social media risks regulatory capture by the biggest social media firms were raised again recently. Bluesky’s chief operating officer said in an interview that social media bans for children and tighter regulations for social media firms risk creating a world where there are only a few social media platforms run by companies with the deepest pockets. Regulations on social media firms have been very lax since they appeared for mainstream users in the 2000’s. This gave Meta, Snapchat, and Google time to build up their user bases and get entrenched, with Meta being the most successful. Now that Meta has succeeded, it has been attempting regulatory capture. By pushing for more regulations of social media, Meta hopes to make it more difficult for rivals to challenge it. For its part, it doesn’t need to worry about the cost of regulation because it has a lot of money to spend, whereas startups do not. Speaking to CNBC, Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operating officer, said: “I support the protection and the safety of youth, the question that we have then is at what cost, because essentially what I’m scared of is in the long term, we’re headed to a world where there’s about three to five platforms, and extreme heavy regulation of those platforms, and basically the whole compliance teams of these platforms are 10 times the size of our entire team. So, basically, we’re living in a world where it’s almost impossible for smaller entrants to come in and build healthier spaces. These platforms have led to a place where the bottom line is the thing that drives what they do... so I understand why governments have to step in and regulate, because the platforms have done nothing right.” She said that while she is not against regulation, there needs to be more channels between the small to mid-sized players and regulators to help protect them. She says that big tech players, on the other hand, “who we know are circumventing regulation,” need to be regulated. Essentially, the Bluesky position is one of nuance, rather than absolutes. While Bluesky’s proposal may preserve competition in the social media space, it still doesn’t address the massive privacy implications these age verification measures introduce, such as handing over sensitive identity documents to access age-gated content.
