Whats the best Socket 775 HSF?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Today I got all my new parts to upgrade my PC, I was going to install it all tonight but before I put it all in the case I quickly tested it all to make sure everything was working, which it was.

Anyway first thing I did was go into the bios and noticed the CPU (Intel Pentium 4 D 920 2.8GHz/4M/800) was running between 68-70?C which seems a bit hot to me, left all of it running for about 5mins and it stayed the same.

I'm just using the stock cooler at the moment and want something good before I go and install it all properly, I realize that the temp may go down a bit when I install in the case as I have good cooling.

I want something good for about ?50, I've been looking at the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and Asus Silent Square Pro, which both seem to have good reviews but I've no idea really.

So if you can help please do as I'd like to try and get this built on the weekend.

Thanks

Thermal compound may cure and drop temps a little, but not 30?C or anything.

Are you sure you've installed it correctly? That is much too high for idle..

Are you overclocking? If not, reinstall it and check eveything because you shouldn't need to spend money to keep your rig cool at stock.

If you're one of those people who are nervous with stock cooling, at stock speeds, then pick up the Arctic Freezer 7.

If you are overclocking, then the Thermalright Ultra 120 has been doing good. It might not really be the very best best, but in this category ( high end cooling ), you're good with any of them.

Between those two, the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme is definitely the one you should choose (in fact many reviews place it as "the best" socket 775 heatsink). Other good choices (if you find that one too pricey) include the Tuniq Tower and the Zalman CNPS9700LED.

Thanks for the replys, I went at bought the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and some Thermalright Chill Factor Thermal Compound, which should be here tomorrow.

After looking at the stock heatsink again it doesn't look like its making proper contact with the cpu, I quickly removed it and the heatsink was very cold compared to the processor, and that was after about 5 minutes of it being turned on, so hopefully this new one will help.

Are you sure you installed the stock heatsink properly. I assume its the intel one you're talking about.

Those push pins make installation a pain in the a**

Make sure you snap it down into the motherboard. Being careful not to break the white locking mechanism (I've done that with two stock HSF's now)

it is possible that the processor's cover (wtf is that called?) is convexly warped, so only the center is making contact while the outter edges arent. ive seen sites about this before and you have to sand it down somehow. have fun! :p

Heatspreader?

Well my heatsink turned up finally :woot: Just quickly set it all up outside the case and tested it for 10 minutes and the temp never went over 49.5C which is about a 30C drop and I haven't put any thermal paste on it yet.

The fan I have on it is only about 1200rpm, would it make a noticeable difference with a higher rpm fan on it?

I'm really impressed by this heatsink so far (although its huge!), going to build the system up on the weekend so it'll be interesting to see what the temps are like when its all in the case.

That would have been a lot cheaper than this one, oh well I've got it now and I'm happy with it.

I've got a feeling that my cpu is faulty as it was hitting over 100C with the old heatsink when in windows, so I'm not sure if I should use it to get the system up and running and order a new cpu next week or just wait to build it until I've got the new cpu.

I've been thinking of getting the E6750, is this better than the E6600? I assume it is but am only asking as the E6750 is cheaper.

:| Holy ... may I ask how you managed that? lol. I have the Arctic Freezer Pro 7 and my temps are 30C/44C idle/load and that's at STOCK speed. :(

Radish?

Well I've nearly finished upgrading my PC today, just got to put the other hard drives in and install 1 more fan at the front then I'm done.

Anyway after applying the thermal paste to the cpu I've now got my idle temps down to 37.5C, not sure what they are on load as I haven't done much with it yet except install windows and my drivers.

The Arctic Freezer isn't really considered a high-end air cooler. I'm very surprised at the temps Radish™ is getting out of his E6600 @ 3.0GHz

The best ones going right now are the Thermaltake 120, Tuniq Tower and Scythe Ninja. The Arctic Freezer is much better than the stock crap Intel and AMD put inside their retail boxes, but if you plan to do any sort of overclocking or have the computer in a warm environment, I'd be looking for something larger.

I've got a Q6600/Tuniq Tower/Antec P182 on order right now. Should be here by the end of the week. :)

Fixed! No point in confusing the kiddies. ;)

Oh, and the stock coolers today are *much* improved and perform well at stock. Check anandtech for one of their reviews.

Idles at 50! What's the load temp?

keep in mind that it's a Pentium D... very hot to begin with. then w/ the voltage increases, high ambient temps and overclocked from 2.66 to 3.7GHz, it's a hot cpu. during the winter the idle temp would drop to like 40C. my load temps right now are around 72C

    • I can't believe Starmer is still there...his party lost so big. He's a stubborn coot, but this is largely unenforceable, so I would imagine he'll be resigning soon. A key here is for parents to buy their kids phones sans Internet access--and set up the Internet at home, where mom and day can, you know, act like parents instead expecting the government to raise their kids.
    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
