New PS3 Owner. A List* Of Questions.

Recommended Posts

Okay, first off let me state I barely ever read manuals for consoles, so I am assuming a decent amount of the questions I may be asking can be found in the manual. If that is the case, just state it, but I also figured I get the really correct way and the better answers from my fellow members here.

So lets see, initially after only about an hour with the PS3, I have the following questions...

  1. Right now I am sharing the Ethernet Cable among my 360 and PS3, and plan to use the Ethernet strictly when gaming online, but where in the hell do I set up the PS3 to use a wireless connections when the Ethernet cable is not plugged in???? I honestly cannot find that anywhere? the 60GB does include wireless correct?
  2. Exactly what OS options do I have for installing? I am pretty sure it is some flavor of Linux, which I have never used in my life, but I figure there is a first for everything, and this seems like a perfect time to start. Any suggestions on a good OS for beginners?
  3. How does one go about sharing media? Through my PC I am guessing? If so, whats the best way to go about it?
  4. In regards to sharing media and such, since 95% of my media is on my Macs, is there an app for OSX that lets me share my media? For my 360, I use an app called Connect360, which works pretty damn good.
  5. Is the six axis set to on by default? Is it more of a game by game setting?
  6. I see there is an Internet Browser. I never even knew this was the case. Is the Internet Browser a new feature? Decent or Horrible?
  7. I know I have read it supports a Mouse & keyboard, and I used a Keyboard to sign up for the PSNetwork, but do games also support the Keyboard/Mouse combo? If so, in particular, R:FOM?
  8. I watched the video for Home, and they mentioned a Bluetooth Wireless headset for talking? Can I use my Bluetooth headset for my cell phone for this feature?
  9. In regards to the friends list, what right now is the benefit to having people on it? Just to send messages? Can we play games with each other if someone is on my list?
  10. Any "must-have" downloadable games? For example I consider Geometry Wars on the 360 "must-have."
  11. Any "l33t Hackers" figure out how to use a 360 controller on the PS3 yet? It is going to take me a long time to get used to the PS controller again, for real.
  12. Finally, what is the release date for Unreal Tournament 3???

I know it is alot of questions, I honestly do, and as I said I have not even read the manual which I know is stupid and lazy of me, but I honestly am more of a hands on type of person and like to figure things out on my own or ask other gamers. Besides, I do flip through the first few pages of the manual, and it came off as poorly written.

Okay, been a long day, I am going to watch some videos I downloaded while writing this, then off to bed. I maybe gamed for 10 minutes, the rest was just navigating my way through menus and trying to get used to this damn controller again.

TIA, and sorry to bombard everyone with what can potentially be very silly questions

1. Under system settings > network settings

2. Any flavour of Linux that supports PPC will do. The easiest ones in order from easiest: Yellow Dog, Ubuntu, Fedora Core

3. Look up a program called TVersity, follow its beginner's guide.

4.

5. Sixaxis is only used when a game uses it. For example in Motorstorm go in the Options and enable it.

6. The Internet Browser came with the PS3. It is fairly fast, not to be confused with the shoddy PSP browser. It's got SSL, Ajax, Flash support etc. So you can use PayPal, eBay, Gmail all painlessly.

7. Plug in any USB keyboard and mouse. No games support keyboard and mouse at the moment. There are some mouse shaped controllers sold by Razr that mimicks a mouse's behaviour but using Sixaxis.

8. Any bluetooth headset.

9. A lot of games use it, see the features for each game.

10. Super Stardust HD, Gran Turismo HD (Free)

12. Phone Cliff B and find out

PS: Your questions are answered everywhere on the interweb. Another "woot i just got a PS3 I got questions" thread is totally not needed :)

Most questions were answered above, I'll just add a few:

5) some games have it on by default. as said above, Motorstorm requires you to turn it on (it's used for steering). in Ninja Gaiden Sigma, it's on when you start. Check the game's control setup, it should mention what it's used for, and if it's on.

6) The web browser is pretty good. I've actually posted on here using it a couple of times. I had no idea it used Flash, I tried accessing a Flash-based website (easportsworld.com) and was turned away. Maybe I just need to install it.

7) There are some games coming that will support M/K, but RFoM does not (afaik). Maybe a patch will fix that, but it will most likely be games that will also appear on PC's (UT3, for example).

8) short answer: yes. You can set it up via System Settings > Chat Settings

10) I like Calling All Cars as well. And for some reason, preferred the F1 demo to GT HD. flow is cool if you're trying to relax.

Thanks bro. Much appreciated. Very much so actually. Great answers seriously.

What is this rest of the web you talk about?? ;)

Honestly I trust our members more than any other place, so like I said I know I was being lazy, but I would rather hear your guys responses than anyone elses.

Thanks to everyone actually. It is much appreciated.

@ Game - Really early to give a definitive impression, I have not really sat down and gamed on it yet, but I will say two things... 1) I am much more impressed than I thought I would have been, much more. 2) I do not regret getting rid of my Wii at all, and if fact I am now very glad I did. The PS3 is much more suited to a gamer like myself. I will miss Super Mario Galaxy, but just watching all of the videos I did last night, I am psyched for real.

Once again congrats on your purchase Larry. I would have responded, but I did not see this topic until now and it seem like everything has been answered. Also, you don't need to, but Calling all cars is a fun game. :) If you like a game like twisted metal that is.

Random question: what game (if any) did you get?
He got R:FOM.
He didn't mention a game, and since you can download some from the store, or get the demos first, he may not have found the need to purchase anything major yet. ;)

Tech Star was correct, I only purchased Resistance:Fall Of Man

First Person Shooters are by far my favorite genre, so I figured since I finally got this console, I might as well play the game that is being hailed not only as one of the best games for the PS3 thus far, but also for the genre I happen to prefer.

I also have MotorStorm on the way from GameFly early next week along with another game. Not sure which game as I have a few on my queue and their shipping status keeps changing.

One of the games I do have on my list is Rainbow Six:Vegas, which I played on the 360 but never fully beat, but I am particularly interested in that one as I really want to compare the experience on both consoles and see if there really is any difference for myself, keeping in mind they had more months to develop the PS3 version.

I am not expecting much of a difference for the record.

I really do have to get used to the controller again though, which is no easy task considering I have not owned a PS2 for a good 5 years. It just feels really awkward at the moment. I know I will eventually get used to it again as I once did, but it is frustrating to use right now, which I realize and am not letting it cloud my initial impression at all.

Congrats on the purchase Larry!

I would recommend the following downloadable games:

Tekken 5 - if you like fighting games. A online mode will be released later this year for it for $9.99.

Stardust HD - a MUST buy it you like GEOwars

Calling All Cars - Multiplayer = mayhem lol

Gran Turismo HD

Disc based games:

Motorstorm

Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Also download the E3 2007 trailers from the PS Store the UT3 trailer is there too :) Gamestop has UT3 listed for 11/1/2007 Link

I will add you to my PS3 friends list :D

Regarding R6V

Expect FPS drops in singleplayer maps when there's alot of action going on.

I too have the X360 version, the maps are abit different. The changes are very small, but good.

And there is no multiplayer server browser :( It searches and joins a game for you :(

No FPS drops in multiplayer tho

The controller is a great one, but if you really do not like how it is in your hand you can always buy 3rd party controllers like Logitech.
