NeoSmart Technologies iReboot 1.0 Released

Recommended Posts

NeoSmart Technologies announces the release of iReboot 1.0, a freeware taskbar utility that lets you choose the operating system to reboot into on-the-fly, without having to use the bootloader screen.

iReboot interfaces with the Vista BCD (so the Vista bootloader is a requirement) and sets the operating system your PC will boot into the next time you restart. Instead of pressing Start | Shutdown | Restart and waiting 10 minutes for Windows to shutdown, your BIOS to post, then racing to select the right operating system from the bootloader before it times out; you just install iReboot, right-click your taskbar and pick the OS you want to boot into - then go out, get a cup of coffee, come back and find it already there.

I've gotta be honest, this doesn't seem incredibly useful, mainly because it requires the Vista bootloader to work. Most people who would use this probably use Linux, which would use GRUB or LILO. And this only works in Vista; once you're in that other OS, you'll have to take that excruciatingly long wait of about 30 seconds to get to the bootloader again, if you want to choose a different OS.

Actually Simon, it's not the case! :)

NeoSmart Technologies' other program, EasyBCD, does just that: let you dual-boot Windows Vista and Linux/BSD/OS X/SkyOS/Anything Else with the Vista bootloader - this is just a helper app that makes it even easier to do so.

The BCD (via EasyBCD) is compatible with DOS - Vista, and iReboot will run on Windows 98+ and Windows NT+ (requires .NET 2.0).

If you look at it by itself, I can see why you'd think it's not that great. But in conjunction with EasyBCD it can be a real timesaver.
