myrhymeandreason
I am new to Autopatcher, so please correct me if I am wrong with any of the following: 1. First I start by downloading a core edition (say the May one). 2. I would then get the June AND July updates because I started with that core, being May. 3. I would run the core file first, then the updates in sequential order. Sorry if this is posted anywhere else, the newbie questions in the Autopatcher section is quite full topics to look through (though I did sift through a few pages). :) *I have Windows XP, latest Hotfix being MS130-KB884016 (the third one lol). You should run the install of core, then the install of update(s) then run Autopatcher Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/578708-autopatcher-updates-and-core-question/#findComment-588755045 Share on other sites

But other than that am I fine? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/578708-autopatcher-updates-and-core-question/#findComment-588755060 Share on other sites
+theblazingangel MVC Posted August 4, 2007 MVC Share Posted August 4, 2007 perfectly, just note that you don't need to run autopatcher between each one, you can just run it afterwards. also note that you should run autopatcher at least twice - after installing some components (e.g. ie7) further updates can become available to you Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/578708-autopatcher-updates-and-core-question/#findComment-588755107 Share on other sites

patipata
OK, let's explain with an example: 1) What is available today from the AP downloads page. _______________________________________________________________________ Main releases Our main releases: AutoPatcher for Windows 2000 SP4 - May 2007 Core | June 2007 Update | July 2007 Update AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP2 (32-bit) - May 2007 Core | June 2007 Update | July 2007 Update AutoPatcher for Windows Server 2003 SP1/R2/SP2 (32-bit) - May 2007 Core | June 2007 Update July 2007 Update | AutoPatcher for Windows XP/Server-2003 (64-bit) - July 2007 Core AutoPatcher for Windows Vista - July 2007 Core Addon packs Additionally we also have the following new addon packs: Extras - July 2007 DirectX x86 - June 2007 DirectX x64 - June 2007 XP WMP10 (32-bit) - May 2007 XP MCE 2005 (32-bit) - May 2007 __________________________________________________________________________ 2) What you want to do (supposedly) : update your XP 32bits + adding extras + DirectX 3) What you will download : AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP2 (32-bit) - May 2007 Core | June 2007 Update | July 2007 Update Extras - July 2007 DirectX x86 - June 2007 4) In what order will you install ? a) May 2007 Core b) June 2007 Update c) DirectX x86 June 2007 d) July 2007 update e) Extras July 2007 Install means run the install files previously downloaded, without running Autopatcher itself in between! All the install go to the same install directory (C:\Program Files\Autopatcher\ by default). At this stage no update to your system will be applied, so if you are unsure of what you have done simply delete the above directory and start again. At each step the AP installer will check that everything which should be here has been previously installed 5) What will you run to actually update your system ? Autpatcher.exe, from the installation directory, or from the icon on your desktop. As Blaze explained before, you will have to run it twice (with a reboot in between) because of precedence constraints of the different system updates. Hope this helps! (and everything, English included, is correct) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/578708-autopatcher-updates-and-core-question/#findComment-588762986 Share on other sites
patipata
seems that I cannot edit my own post, so I will continue here: 6) Remarks Obviously you dont need to restart the full download and install process each month. Next month you will download what you need (update, addons, extras). You will continue to install over previous installations, in the same directory, with the same logic as in 4). If then you rerun Autopatcher, on an already updated system, only new and applicable updates will show up (-in black-, already applied ones are displayed in blue). When a new Core release became available, you must delete the install directory, install this new core release first and then extra and addons (I wonder how it will work with older extras and addons; -somebody please confirm-) Hope this helps! qdubb
Bravo for this explanation! As a newbie this is the explanation I needed. I did not know that the downloads were to be installed first b4 running autopatcher. This breakdown is what I needed. Two more questions: 1. So if I was to prepare autopatcher to be run from a network share would run the executables on a PC then copy the C:\Program Files\Autopatcher to the share? 2. Are there Office 2003 updates available? Again, I appreciate this breakdown. This should be in the FAQ or How to. Type "Office" in the search box, upper right corner. qdubb said: Again, I appreciate this breakdown. This should be in the FAQ or How to. Why not.
