I read something about this once. This tends to be mostly true of western cultures where Christianity has dominated. Apparently, there is still a strong cultural memory of the importance of the "trilogy". Although I can't remember if I read this in an actual study or just someone suggesting that as a possible link for apparent preference of the number 3.

I thought that maybe this poll was an exception. But then I realized that all of Neowin subconsciously melded together in order to make sure that the number 3 was the 3rd most popular!

Yes, it because as a general rule people like to stay away from extremes. On a 1-10 scale, those would be 1, 5, and 10. This theory is more apparent in surveys using Likert scaling.
