[Official] Doctor Who Thread

So. Which of you cried too? Started with the poem for me and then got progressively worse right 'till the end. That surprise appearance pretty much turned me into a complete emotional wreck / pile of tears :p

(I am so glad we get BBC HD here in Belgium!)

I really teared up when that person appeared and Matt was giving his last speech!

Erm what? Will there be a part two to finish up this story line. I know most doctor who episodes end with plot holes but this was worse than most. Overall the ending got a poor reception in my house.

What plot holes, from what I understood it resolved everything from Matt Smiths time as the Doctor.

Well, I thought it was absolute rubbish. Who has gotten progressively more cheap looking and more nonsensical under Moffat's tutelage.

Tonight's episode was a good example of this, lots of flowery language that ultimately makes no sense, plots that went absolutely nowhere and the damn daleks again, is it possible for Moffat to write an episode now where the daleks don't make an appearance?

I can't wait for Moffat to leave and someone else with more imagination to take over because Moffat is just churning over the same stories now.

I thought those buildings looked familiar :p

It was a nice episode, but in general I've liked the last few years of Who a bit less than 9 and 10's. Those storylines were both more complex and simpler at the same times. Less easy fixes and better reasons/explanations for things. But it hasn't been bad, I still love it.

i do not want to sound to critical however, i honestly thought the episode was rather boring. and Moffet kept promising to close story loops and not really much of anything happened in the episode.

The actual regeneration looked really good.  I hope they take the show in a new direction with Peter Capaldi because they do tend to rehash the same storylines over and over again.  I also hope his Doctor is a bit more serious and a little less frenetic than all the other portayals have been since the reboot.  Something more like Jon Pertwee's Doctor would be great.  A character with a bit more depth.

Do the time lords have the ability to open and close the cracks at will? Have they given up trying to re-enter this universe? What about the remaining Daleks around Christmas? Only one ship blew up on screen? What about the desolated planet the Doctor met the great intelligence at in the future?

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
