[Official] Doctor Who Thread

They went the "tragic departure" route again? That card is massively overplayed - of the modern companions, only Martha left voluntarily. I miss the days when the companion would just find a place to settle down, or decide to go home, or meet someone and decide to stay. Why does it always have to a great tragedy these days? One more sign that Moffett needs to go.

Actually, several have died. Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Kamelion, Adric, possibly Peri depending on which story you believe, Ace (in the comics), River Song (in a way), the Williamses.

And virtually all of the departures in the new series have been tragic in some way, even if they weren't a death. It's very tiresome. That's my complaint - that every companion leaving has to be played for maximum drama. Never "It was fun, Doctor, but I need to move on. Stop in when you're in this century!"

I agree

Clara's death was way too corny and how they played it to be "oh she just got careless like the doctor". this episode has been the weakest for me, ever since the tennant domination :p

I do disagree on how the companions fall in love with saving the world, isn't that what human behavior is about? Just giving up a "normal" life  to see and travel the multiverse? I'm game! Fcuk normal :p

I'll admit, you've got a good point :p
I guess it comes down to both what you consider a companion and what you consider "Being killed off". Personally there's been a few throughout the years that i would quite happily have killed off myself :p

I agree

Most tended to eventually get tired of the constant danger (Victoria Waterfield, Tegan Jovanka), or decide to stick around somewhere and make a longer-term difference (Nyssa, Romana, Vicki, Steven Taylor), or take a chance to go home (Ian & Barbara) or fall in love and stay with the guy (Susan, Leela, Jo Grant). Mel Bush chose to jump ship and travel with another rogue (possibly to keep the guy in check). Liz Shaw chose to return to her work at University - she'd been "drafted" by UNIT and left once it became clear that the Doctor made her a second-class scientific advisor. It was never considered a lifetime situation for any companion.

I confess I was massively disappointed that the writers backed off on Peri being dead. And that Rose Tyler's "This is how I died" was hyperbole . . .

It was never considered, but why not? Ratings and all that jazz. But many shows manage to pull off having the same companion. but I guess that would change the shows dynamics and characters interaction would be less (eg. if the companion was the same, the family would be the same etc.)

So anyway, bets on how long until we get a new companion? My bets on male, seeing as this doctor is "old" it wouldn't make sense to have the whole fall in love like rose, martha and amy n clara kinda sorta, they played their way out of it.

The new companion, if there's only one, will be female. It's traditional. The only time Doctor Who only had a male companion was for half of Evil of the Daleks in the Troughton era. He and Jamie were a great team, though! I'd love to see a male companion who isn't attached to the existing girl one somehow (boyfriend/husband/grandfather).

It's worth noting that an "in love" dynamic is not necessary just because the companion is female - it was never the case in the old series, except for maybe Romana II (since Lalla and Tom got married while on the show the chemistry kind of came through.) It was always a mentor/father/crazy uncle relationship. With Capaldi it should be that way again.

Personally, I'd love to see a few companions at once, and not a companion and boyfriend set this time. Just a couple of people for Doctor Who to interact with.

alright, new season new companion or solo season? Seems they've been hinting at that ever since matt smith.

I hope they don't try a companionless season - it doesn't work with Doctor Who solo. He needs someone to explain stuff to so the audience knows what's going on.

Maybe a Data-like android companion? Trying to understand the human experience, but emotions escape them. Maybe a blend of Data from Star Trek, and Pinocchio. The Doctor could try to make him a real organic like he wants.

Actually the Data could work!!! Something like

"The doctor, taking his inspiration from old star trek, and after (to dconnells disliking) lost many companions tragicly, he decided to get a soulless android companion... plot twist, companion ends up becoming human some how... not to mention moffat would get trekkie brownie points :p Ahhh one can dream..

I think the trailer for this Saturday's Doctor Who showed him on his own after he's been kidnapped, trying to figure it all out. I think he'll either meet somebody during the episode who will tag along and become the companion, or we may a character who may become a future companion.

What I've noticed in two of the previous companions since the 2005 reboot, is that they have appeared in some way shape or form before. Karen Gillen was cast in "Fires of Pompeii" (like how Peter Capaldi was in it and is now the Doctor!) and then starred as another role as Amy. Jenna Coleman appeared first in "Asylum of the Daleks" and then started a role as Clara. I'm not entirely sure if it was written from the start to incorporate the story lines, or if that was done after she was cast as the new companion.

Or, we may see him bounce around with 'temporary' companions until a stable one is found!

Let's not forget Martha was a worker for Torchwood at Canary Wharf in Doomsday and Donna was a runaway bride.

Same actress, yes, but wasn't that her niece? She died in that episode.

(that was the episode Army of Ghosts)

Yeah, that's what we mean. Some of the previous actors who became companions had previous other roles on the show.

Yeah, it's the actors we're talking about. I just couldn't be bothered to spell Freema's surname :p

    • Funny, but I didn't had the issue. All PC's at work are Dell and we had the culprit version of Support Assist for about 2 weeks until we got the new one. No problem at all. And for checking you can also use Dell Command Update, no need to search in windows settings. Just check the Upgrade History.
    • YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Apple are scared of their customers! They have built a brand over the years of "it just works out of the box", but that slows innovation. Samsung's master stroke was the Galaxy Ultra: "Let's cram everything into one handset, make it so stupid only real nerds will love it, some of the features will work, some won't, but the audience will have such a high tolerance they won't care". Apple has no such device and so they are constantly worrying these days about the fallout of creating a new experience that customers might not like. I know it is often cited the reason they don't build a touchscreen Mac Book is they don't want to cannibalise the the iPad market, but I think it's equally cold feet after the criticism Microsoft receive trying to make a touch compatible desktop OS

    • So, an article that has nothing to do with Windows 11, still gets Windows 11 in the title and a build number as the picture? Dell have a buggy build of Support Assist HP have UEFI settings that need unlocking for the secureboot cert upgrade to take place.
