and that is after only one day :)

Edit 2: Okay after running it in Virtualbox, which was nice and fast I added 2 more screenshots. You may notice they look different because I changed the GTK theme to clearlooks as it looks better and I wanted to show that it could be done so people don't have to see the ugly default theme :)

Be careful, Kreuger, I have "people" to deal with criticizers :p

Barney: that's insane, once again!

And the development goes on...lots of downloads, lots of feedback...lots more coming!

/end teaser/

And, DaViD_BRaNDoN, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but gcc, make, automake, autoconf, gdb, and libc6-dev are included. No Java development tools, but if it's GPL, we'd look into including it.

Thanks for the clarification. Glad that it has GCC. And ste was right on the JDK.

Yeah. Fluxbox is very minimal. No desktop icons. No "control panel" for system properties. No "start menu" on the desktop, you right-click and get your menu there.

And the origins of the *box Window Managers may be 'older' than KDE, but that doesn't mean *boxes are obsolete or use 'old code'.

Update on downloads (09/12/07):

What are the system requirements for each of these....

Is Shift meant for low resource Pentium 100's and k6's will it run on those

or do you need a vista machine.....

What was it designed to run on.....

tnx

burdicda

^ Linux is designed to run on any Pentium processor. However, if you have a lower level CPU, or a minimum amount of RAM (64 MB is the lowest reasonable amount.... and that is pushing it) then you should opt for Fluxbox. That desk manager is designed for low resource computers.

I've been a neowin user and fan for long time, but couldn't participate in the Shift Linux drive that you guys have been running... I had seen it when you guys were running the logo competition... I've also been an active Linux contributor at SuSE... Hoping to be part of team to build the next version, if you guys have room!!

Just buzz me, when you have the next build starting!! Will be downloading, working and will give feedback on this one for the moment!!

Its 80% downloaded and Im getting HTTP/1.1 416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable ... Any ideas why this would happen??

Wow, I haven't heard of that... I'll check with Dave and get back to you ......

I posted this in the thread on the front page yesterday. No replies and I didn't notice the link on that page to here, so I'm postin it here now.

Man, I just couldn't wait. Have to admit, I'm trying this on this old a** raggedy box I mentioned above, but I just downloaded and burned the iso. Went to try the live cd, and there was that message I've gotten on this machine with EVERY Linux distro I've tried on here as it's booting up:

You have passed an undefined paramater something or other and I never get to a desktop.

Don't have another computer on, at the moment, to start searching for answers, and don't remember/know the commands off the top of my head to do anything with it. I know it's the video. I have Intel integrated 82810 chip.

What do I need to do to get this thing off the ground, so I can start playing/re-learning this distro, so I can be ready to pretend to know what I'm doing when the final release comes out? I'm attempting to use the Flux version.

Thank you

^ Thanks for the nice response. We are trying to make this distro the very best there is! I hope that we do not disappoint you.

    • Tor Browser 15.0.15 by Razvan Serea Protect your privacy. Defend yourself against network surveillance and traffic analysis. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody from watching your Internet connection and learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked. The Tor Browser Bundle lets you use Tor on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured web browser to protect your anonymity, and is self-contained. • Less disk space means less bandwidth demands which means lower operating costs for service providers... that's where money talks. ... cuz it's not about improving video quality!... that's just marketing spin.
    • And thereby lies the rub. AV1 support is not as wide as paid analysts would have the industry believe. With AV2 around the corner, it's going cause more time backlog in adoption (how many recent purchasers will upgrade yet-again within the next 6-12 months? most would rather stay pat for another 1+ years before even thinking about upgrading their setups).
    • Microsoft OneDrive is getting a simple yet much needed feature by Sayan Sen Microsoft has been steadily expanding OneDrive’s file management capabilities over the years, including for shared content and shortcuts, although it has had its flaws, too. The cloud storage platform introduced support for folder shortcuts several years ago, allowing users to pin frequently accessed shared folders from OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams. Now, Microsoft is refining that experience further with a new way to organize those shortcuts as revealed in a recent Microsoft 365 roadmap addition. Previously, shortcuts added through the “Add shortcut to My files” option would appear alongside all other files and folders in the root of a user's OneDrive. And although it's meant to be useful, this approach could also create clutter along the way, especially for heavy users who may have to work with large numbers of shared folders across multiple projects and teams on their systems. This is where Microsoft’s latest feature comes in, as it is looking to address this inconvenience by giving users the option to place new shortcuts inside a dedicated “Shortcuts” folder instead. The feature is designed to keep shortcut links organized into a single location instead of scattering throughout the main OneDrive directory. Hence, the idea is to make navigation and usability easier and simpler. The first time a user chooses this option, OneDrive will automatically create the folder, and to help make it stand out from the other folders, the Shortcuts folder will have a distinct visual identity featuring a unique color and a building-style icon. That being said, the new Shortcuts will behave just like any other folder in OneDrive, and as such, users will be able to move it to a different location, rename it, share it with others, or remove it entirely if they prefer a different structure. You can view the entry on the Microsoft 365 roadmap website here. Currently, the feature is in the "in development" phase, but the tech giant expects the rollout to start next month (July 2026). Do keep in mind, though, that new feature rollouts often get delayed.
