HD-VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc) format

It's front page news on Neowin.... https://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=42471

HD VMD discs, which hold up to 30GB on a single side, are encoded with a maximum bit rate of 40 megabits per second; that's within halfway between HD DVD's 36 mpbs and Blu-ray's 48 mbps. The format uses MPEG-2 and VC1 video formats to encode at 1080p resolution for the time being, and will possibly move to the H.264 format in the future.

The HD VMD format supports up to 7.1-channel Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS audio output, though it will not offer the high-bit-rate Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio surround-sound codecs.

They used plain old Red Laser to get 30GB on a disc... How did they do that? And I'm okay with Dolby Digital Plus or DTS. It's not a huge lost... At 40mpbs, it should offer better quality than HD-DVD??

Anyway, it's another HD format, late in a battle with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.... Do we need this now?

But at $150, it's really nice! Only the "cheap" Venturer HD-DVD player will cost almost the same price. And they say the movies will cost less too...

HELLO BOZ! You have something to say about this?

Are you kidding me. We don't need another format in the mix! Blu-Ray or HD-DVD needs to finish it off soon. I hope Blu-Ray because I own a PS3 and then I don't need to buy another device. If HD-DVD wins I'll end up buying something to play it.

You sound like I'm gonna roll over and die becuase of the possibility that this format might endanger HD DVD hahaha..

I already shared my opinion on MAIN news :)

Too much money and support has been invested in both HD DVD and Blu-Ray for this new format to live up to it's expectations. Blue laser is here to stay and to be honest this format is very similar to HD DVD but lacks many features.

Second, we will see $150 HD DVD players this holiday season so this is really a non issue. The real thing is studio support and the pricing of discs and in that regard, we won't see any realistic pricing until any HD format gets mass adoptation.

This is the site : http://www.nmeinc.com/

They have movies listed that HD-DVD don't even have (right now).

Apocalypto

Saw II

Saw III

Lord of War

Passion of The Christ

Hoodwinked

Pulp Fiction

Gosford Park

The Queen

Butterfly Effect 1 & 2

Lord of the Rings ??

And much more, some less known movies... Nothing top quality but they do have something to start with. Mel Gibson seems to like HD-VMD !!!
