Neowin MP3 Converter

Quick app info:

Size: 307 KB

Memory Footprint: 5 MB

Codec: LAME

Bit rates: 64, 96, 128, 160, 192, 256, 320

Version: 0.4

D/L size: 300-500 KB

Things hopefuly coming in later releases:

  • FLAC Support (see 2nd post)
  • Mass/batch MP3 conversion (6th post)
  • Variable bit-rate support (9th post)

Details:

I have made a small program to convert *.mp3 and *.wav files into mp3 files with custom bit rates. This app is written in RapidQ Basic, and the code is courtesy of the PC User magazine. I have modified the code to increase bit rate options and include an icon.

The Neowin MP3 Converter is based on the LAME command line tool and takes the selected bitrate and applies it to the chosen .mp3 or .wav file. One known short fall is that you cannot select multiple sound files before conversion; you have to convert files separately. You can also type in a bit rate and click “Save MP3″, but if you do, you won’t be able to save the *.mp3 file.

Installation:

There is no installation method. However, you have to extract all the files in the *.zip file to the same directory otherwise the Neowin MP3 Converter will not work properly.

For the minimum install, the LAME exe needs to be the same directory as the rest of the files.

Enjoy! I accept feedback, so please make comments about this app.

Very awesome program, but can you add FLAC to MP3 support as well? Thanks redeemed.

Thanks Jake. FLAC might be coming up in a future version if I can get the Command-line tools to work well with this app.

Nice app.

I'm not sure but the Neowin admins might not want you to use the Neowin name.

That doesn't seem to suggest that you don't require approval to brand it. Also, while it's great that you're flexing your programming muscles, isn't the application on the whole a little useless to everyone else? It's not often that I want to downsample a single mp3 file. I'm not saying you shouldn't develop it further, just that it probably needs further development before it becomes useful.

If this program could mass downsample mp3 files, I would be interested. For the sake of limited space on my mobile phone, that is. It would have to estimate how much space all the new song files would take up and it would have to be able to downsample from different bit rates. Just throwing that out there, do whatever you want though, looks good so far :)

@Slimy: Thanks, I'll take that into consideration and see what I can come up with. There might be 1) interface limitations or 2)LAME limitations or both, but I'll try and if it works, it's a bonus.

@Anaron: Thanks, enjoy. :)

@Kudos: I should've made it clear in the first place but anyway:

I agree with what you said, it might need a bit of development, but this is still in the early stages so I will hopefully add more features in later versions.

Thanks for the feedback everyone (Y)
