Yet another Vista vs XP Thread

Question

Okay i've finally reached the end of my patience. Now, i may be seen and classed as a Windows fanboy, simply because i tend to get the latest first (and only because i strenuously test, and thus reap rewards for my work).

This will more than likely go the same way as the main page article on Vista being a zombie, but after a little bit of internet searching, i find comments like this, back in 2001, about XP.

hiredgoonz08-22-2001, 05:33 PM

I see no reason to bother with XP...and believe me, I love to upgrade, I don't stay away from new products in any way, but the combination of XP's activation feature hassle and manner of operation have pretty much given me no desire to use the product...

PC Dummy08-22-2001, 06:07 PM

I used to rush right out and buy the next "greatest" product. I stopped that with Win98SE. I do own a copy of ME, but I have never installed it on any of my machines.

I can't see replacing what is the most stable microsoft product I've used, with what looks like could be the biggest headache ever. I have not experienced NT or 2000, and I may try that route in the future, but I sure as heck will avoid XP.

etower92308-22-2001, 06:29 PM

I am running RC2 version of XP and believe me guys its very stable, now i kinda feel bored cause my computer isnt giving any problems hehe

ranchdog08-22-2001, 06:33 PM

SIR..... This isn't meant to rain on your parade, but I'll pass on XP. 98SE isn't broke, so why fix it. What's that stand for anyway... 'xtra problems ? After the ME fiasco maybe... 'xtra punishment?

Ghost_Hacker08-22-2001, 07:35 PM

I use to rush out and get the lastest version of Microsoft's Operating systems. That made sense when......

Going from DOS to 3.11 gave me a GUI...

Going from 3.11 to 95 gave me Plug and Play....

Going from 95 to 98 gave me FAT32 and USB support....

Going form 98 to ME gave me nothing but problems,problems,problems.......

Oh ME runs OK, but it doesn't like to play nice with some of my older stuff. Since I do alot of troubleshooting of computers when I'm at work. I don't feel much like doing the same when I get home.

XP....blah humbu

YODA7408-22-2001, 08:00 PM

alright i resemble that i run W/ME it's runnin stable now knock on wood. BUT I WISH I KEPT MY 95. I hate ME and i have to agree with Ranchdog XP has to mean extra problems.KAOS hit it on the head.hehehehe!

hiredgoonz08-22-2001, 08:43 PM

As far as its stability goes...I've run Beta 2, RC1, and RC2 and I guarantee none of them were as stable as Windows 2000...

I'm not saying they couldn't have improved it from then, but a lot of times, the more stuff you try to add onto a codebase, the worse it runs...they've added so much stuff to XP (in the spirit of ME) that it just felt like they tried to get to the point where you won't need any software but theirs...

New digital imaging software, instant messaging, built-in firewall (pain in the a$$) system restore...and even in compatibility mode, most non-M$ programs were not trouble free...

This is nothing new for M$, I seem to remember something with an "improved" winsock that left any ISP except for MSN non-operational.

I was not impressed with XP and although I was first in line to test it, I have no plans to buy it...it runs worse than Windows 2000, so why would I "upgrade"???

iisbob08-26-2001, 06:06 PM

As i posted on a link Ghost has earlier, i've got XP pro; and compared to W2000-it just doesn't cut it!

I've been able to see NO discernable benefit in XP's vaunted " update " over the stability and features already offered in W2000, or for that matter W98se!

ME was a blunder, kindof a major patch for the W95 kernel that M$ tried to push out on people after it has realized that the NT kernel used in W2000 should have been the only true OS release to begin with.

As noted earlier, the peguin is what i'm looking more and more forward too. Based [directly on the UNIX code, it's got M$ generally beat hands down in all areas but user friendliness-and that ain' far behind!

I believe XP will be the virtual " straw " that broke the Camel's back as far as M$'s PC monopoly.

That last comment to me, is especially interesting.. "XP will be the virtual " straw " that broke the Camel's back as far as M$'s PC monopoly." ...was it? Not according to the "discussions" that go on here of late

Round and round in circles, we're at the same point, for the most part, we all were back in 2001. I know for a majority fact that the vast percentage of Vista flamers have tried the OS for little more than a week, couldnt work out where things were, got annoyed with the folder linking for things like documents and settings, etc for legacy programs to still find their way into the right places, swearing that Vista had locked them out of their own files. People moaning about UAC, no different to WPA back in the day (in terms of annoyance to some)

Like various previous OS's, i've been privileged enough to be a user/tester from near enough start of beta cycle, and most certainly first RC. Vista has been stable for me since last RC release, and much more stable again since RTM. Now i'm not just being all "woo yay vista", because i remember when i had Win2k on RC1, i thought it was very stable, loved it, made my main OS, and stuck with 2k on one of my systems until 2003. My experience with XP was simply one of "well i can dump ME now then", rather than "WOO XP great", as it was simply NT 5.1 (many forget this) I.E. Win2k Second Edition, with some major (and even more minor) improvements.

Guys i'm just asking for an end to this XP vs Vista vs linix rubbish that seems to swamp tech sites (Neowin included) these days.

Take it all on board, we'll be saying how amazing Vista is compared to say, Windows 7, in about 3-5 years time, i can guarantee it.

I can agree with that. I didn't use the beta of XP back in the day, but since I worked at Circuit City at the time it came out, we all got free copies of XP Pro for doing the XP training. I was using XP about 2 months before it hit retail and never had any major problems with it. Same with Vista. I don't see what everyone is complaining about. UAC isn't a big deal to be honest. Yeah, it's annoying sometimes, but i'd rather have that piece of mind that its actually doing something that bitching about it, turning it off and not knowing when something is trying to run when it shouldn't be.

exactly my point IceBreakerG, and as you pointed out, even if it does annoy you, and you're more than knowledgeable to cope, you can turn things like UAC off (i did, for various reasons)

The problem with that is as follows. With each introduction of a new Windows OS, new unwanted features are added, starting with XP and Activation. I know loads of people who never upgraded.

Now you have Vista with yet even more unwanted features. With each new introduction of these new breeds of OS, you're driving customers off permanently with annoying features. This path will continue I assure you, no matter how many comments you dig up.

I myself am on my last Windows OS (XP). I have Vista Business but never plan to use it, yes it was a freebie. But I personally never had a problem with XP when it came out, I don't think many did. Just the vocal ones.

But you shouldn't worry Mr. self-proclaimed "fanboy" ;). People will eat what is force fed to them. Just my 2cents. Have a nice day.

I'd use a stripped down version of Vista without some of the "security" features, which is more to protect microsoft than the user.

play around with vLite, see what you can remove

Re-read, i didnt proclaim myself a fanboy :)

i use vista... everything works, it does the job and has some nice new features i really like. so why would i use xp?

everyone is always going on about "useless features" ever consider turning them off? you can do that you know... you also need to consider that these so-called "useless features" might be usefull to some people.

Take the sidebar for example, i dont like it, turned it off, no biggie.

i love vista and would choose it over xp any day for home use... at work i would use xp untill compatibility issues with vista are solved (this problem is not ms's fault btw)

i dont mean to insult anything or anyone by posting this, its just my opinion.

I agree with what's most of what's been posted here.

However, if we turn off all these useless extra features, then what are we left with? Perhaps I've got it wrong, but one of Vista's main selling points is that it's more secure? So by turning that off, what have you paid for?

Don't get me wrong, Vista is a good OS. However, what annoys me is that it has the pricetag of a whole new operating system, whereas Vista is closer to an expansion of XP (although they did re-write the entire kernel) than a new OS.

That's just my opinion anyway.

the xp activation doesent bother nor affect me,i would wait till vista hits sp1,98se support is almost gone and xp is not a bad os it is actualy very good and if you dont want those extra stuff you can turn them off.

I don't see how a few past gripes about XP have anything to do with the current general consensus that Vista sucks.

I also don't like the way its being forced on gamers with with dx10 exclusivity, and Halo 2 being Vista exclusive? lol the game is 3 years old.

Just because a few people didn't like XP several years ago doesn't prove anything with Vista now, ha.

Oh really?

2001: XP sucks, 98/2000 is way better.

2007: Vista sucks, XP is way better.

2009/2010: Seven sucks, Vista is way better.

If you turned off all the extra features, you'd still have a new OS with completely revamped stacks and systems. It's a new OS, you just can't see it... because a lot of the feature work so well that you don't notice them.... and of course some have not been used to their true potential.

That's exactly how it is with every release from Microsoft.

It's great during the betas, but as soon as it RTMs, it all of a sudden isnt good enough :p

Come on man. Think back to Longhorn and how many features were supposed to be in Vista that have not been implemented. It's just a dissapointing release in that regard. I know many new features are incorporated, especially security and I know you can make excuses for the ones that haven't.

  • 0

Well there the feature that was suppose to adjust the display regardless of the resolution.

The identity system.

The sidebar was a lot more integral and useful back then.... compared to now...

The previews of items was a lot prettier....

They also seemed to have a lot more transitions between items in a window... it makes it nicer

The search back then had suggestions while you typed

They had some sort of people network that integrated them with everything

They also removed the older theme, but I guess that doesn't count :p

What impressed me the most with the old longhorn was the scenario videos.

... I guess the main problem is that there aren't really any impressive applications available like they presented in the scenario videos.

I think Vista is pretty good, but the one improvement I'd like to see is with the search. i.e. it's just not intuitive enough. i.e. if I type games, I don't want the games folder to show up, I want a list of games to popup in the list. And it should be able to handle program requests i.e. slideshow <picture folder>. Or let's say I want to visit a website, so I enter neowin in my search.... neowin.net or neowin.net/forum should be my top result... not the page that I added my comments to.

i would wait till sp1 but thusfar vista has a better start than xp did, superfetch is awesome.

I aggree, i remeber in 2001 forum pages were full with problems regarding XP (don't know about neowin)... seems to be alot less now.

Vista is going to be a great OS, it just needs some time to grow like XP did.

vista sXcks

I spent lots of time, still didn't find where to create a ppoe connection. Shamed of the wizard design

Start - Network - Network Sharing Centre (tab) - Setup Connection or Network (side link) - Connect to Internet - then it'll say Broadband PPPOE.

I don't think it could be any simpler really..

Maybe he should have said "Shamed of the brain design" ;)
