Yet another Vista vs XP Thread

Question

Okay i've finally reached the end of my patience. Now, i may be seen and classed as a Windows fanboy, simply because i tend to get the latest first (and only because i strenuously test, and thus reap rewards for my work).

This will more than likely go the same way as the main page article on Vista being a zombie, but after a little bit of internet searching, i find comments like this, back in 2001, about XP.

hiredgoonz08-22-2001, 05:33 PM

I see no reason to bother with XP...and believe me, I love to upgrade, I don't stay away from new products in any way, but the combination of XP's activation feature hassle and manner of operation have pretty much given me no desire to use the product...

PC Dummy08-22-2001, 06:07 PM

I used to rush right out and buy the next "greatest" product. I stopped that with Win98SE. I do own a copy of ME, but I have never installed it on any of my machines.

I can't see replacing what is the most stable microsoft product I've used, with what looks like could be the biggest headache ever. I have not experienced NT or 2000, and I may try that route in the future, but I sure as heck will avoid XP.

etower92308-22-2001, 06:29 PM

I am running RC2 version of XP and believe me guys its very stable, now i kinda feel bored cause my computer isnt giving any problems hehe

ranchdog08-22-2001, 06:33 PM

SIR..... This isn't meant to rain on your parade, but I'll pass on XP. 98SE isn't broke, so why fix it. What's that stand for anyway... 'xtra problems ? After the ME fiasco maybe... 'xtra punishment?

Ghost_Hacker08-22-2001, 07:35 PM

I use to rush out and get the lastest version of Microsoft's Operating systems. That made sense when......

Going from DOS to 3.11 gave me a GUI...

Going from 3.11 to 95 gave me Plug and Play....

Going from 95 to 98 gave me FAT32 and USB support....

Going form 98 to ME gave me nothing but problems,problems,problems.......

Oh ME runs OK, but it doesn't like to play nice with some of my older stuff. Since I do alot of troubleshooting of computers when I'm at work. I don't feel much like doing the same when I get home.

XP....blah humbu

YODA7408-22-2001, 08:00 PM

alright i resemble that i run W/ME it's runnin stable now knock on wood. BUT I WISH I KEPT MY 95. I hate ME and i have to agree with Ranchdog XP has to mean extra problems.KAOS hit it on the head.hehehehe!

hiredgoonz08-22-2001, 08:43 PM

As far as its stability goes...I've run Beta 2, RC1, and RC2 and I guarantee none of them were as stable as Windows 2000...

I'm not saying they couldn't have improved it from then, but a lot of times, the more stuff you try to add onto a codebase, the worse it runs...they've added so much stuff to XP (in the spirit of ME) that it just felt like they tried to get to the point where you won't need any software but theirs...

New digital imaging software, instant messaging, built-in firewall (pain in the a$$) system restore...and even in compatibility mode, most non-M$ programs were not trouble free...

This is nothing new for M$, I seem to remember something with an "improved" winsock that left any ISP except for MSN non-operational.

I was not impressed with XP and although I was first in line to test it, I have no plans to buy it...it runs worse than Windows 2000, so why would I "upgrade"???

iisbob08-26-2001, 06:06 PM

As i posted on a link Ghost has earlier, i've got XP pro; and compared to W2000-it just doesn't cut it!

I've been able to see NO discernable benefit in XP's vaunted " update " over the stability and features already offered in W2000, or for that matter W98se!

ME was a blunder, kindof a major patch for the W95 kernel that M$ tried to push out on people after it has realized that the NT kernel used in W2000 should have been the only true OS release to begin with.

As noted earlier, the peguin is what i'm looking more and more forward too. Based [directly on the UNIX code, it's got M$ generally beat hands down in all areas but user friendliness-and that ain' far behind!

I believe XP will be the virtual " straw " that broke the Camel's back as far as M$'s PC monopoly.

That last comment to me, is especially interesting.. "XP will be the virtual " straw " that broke the Camel's back as far as M$'s PC monopoly." ...was it? Not according to the "discussions" that go on here of late

Round and round in circles, we're at the same point, for the most part, we all were back in 2001. I know for a majority fact that the vast percentage of Vista flamers have tried the OS for little more than a week, couldnt work out where things were, got annoyed with the folder linking for things like documents and settings, etc for legacy programs to still find their way into the right places, swearing that Vista had locked them out of their own files. People moaning about UAC, no different to WPA back in the day (in terms of annoyance to some)

Like various previous OS's, i've been privileged enough to be a user/tester from near enough start of beta cycle, and most certainly first RC. Vista has been stable for me since last RC release, and much more stable again since RTM. Now i'm not just being all "woo yay vista", because i remember when i had Win2k on RC1, i thought it was very stable, loved it, made my main OS, and stuck with 2k on one of my systems until 2003. My experience with XP was simply one of "well i can dump ME now then", rather than "WOO XP great", as it was simply NT 5.1 (many forget this) I.E. Win2k Second Edition, with some major (and even more minor) improvements.

Guys i'm just asking for an end to this XP vs Vista vs linix rubbish that seems to swamp tech sites (Neowin included) these days.

Take it all on board, we'll be saying how amazing Vista is compared to say, Windows 7, in about 3-5 years time, i can guarantee it.

Ok, a few were valid, BUT:

Well there the feature that was suppose to adjust the display regardless of the resolution.

Provided you have Aero on, DPI scaling works fine. WPF apps are natively resolution indepedant (Unless the developer did something stupid), and for apps that aren't, the DWM will automatically scale them up as needed: http://www.istartedsomething.com/20061211/vista-dpi-scaling/

The identity system.

Cardspace?

They also seemed to have a lot more transitions between items in a window... it makes it nicer

You have to balance usability versus eye candy. Too many transitions hurt the overall usability of the system.

They also removed the older theme, but I guess that doesn't count

Doesn't count because that theme was terrible in comparison to Aero Glass :p

Vista FTW.

Vista is more evolution than revolution. But its true these things go in cycles, and one day people will be defending Vista against "Blackcomb" or "Windows 7" or whatever it ends up being called. XP was a good thing for PC's even though initially people were reluctant to believe it.

Hopefully, I'll be able to skip Vista, and just go to Windows 7 (whatever it's going to be called).

I'm not sure if I'll be able to survive on this aging hardware though. :/

The bottom line from me is: do as you like - stick with XP or Vista - both are as good as each other, for various different things.

I'm going to try and avoid every Vista.vs.XP topic from now on. It's just excessive

I like XP because it works. Besides, the only person I know that uses Vista right now is my cousin.

But, in a few years, everyone will be using Vista, whether we want to or not.

By the way, Majin, you have really good taste in music. :) Have you gotten Dark Passion Play yet? (It rocks.)

Seeing as i have a SATA drive, no floppy and XP setup needs the drivers to install (and MS butt-****ed me completely by only allowing them installed via floppy) i'll say Vista. At first i was reluctant to use it but it's a lot faster for the things i want to do, everything's a lot more organised.. i wouldn't install XP again.

Windows XP had 22 running processes when i was using it, Vista has 48 for the bare essentials... :)

I was an XP user for ages and had dabbled in Vista on and off since it was in Beta. Recently I decided to give Vista a good stab and ran it exclusively for a few weeks. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was as good as XP in everything I wanted to do and better in others. I particularly like that it includes drivers for ALL of my hardware out of the box. Under XP I have to do a big install-fest to get everything working.

I'm now trying it on my work PC to see how it goes.

Home PC = Sempron64 w/ 1.5Gb RAM, GF6200

Work PC = Pentium D w/ 2Gb RAM, GF8600GT

I really thought that MS couldn't repeat the same disaster they had with WinME, more to the point, I thought they may have learned a few lessons from previous??

Just goes to show that even the big guns get it wrong once in a while. Awful OS's the pair of them, and SP1 for Bloatista ain't looking too hot either.

But that's not the scaling they were talking about - Vista let's you choose between 96DPI or 120DPI just like every other version of Windows. What they demoed during development was the ability to resize (and properly scale) any window and maintain the relationship of all the items - so if you wanted Calculator to be 25% bigger then you could press a keyboard shortcut (or button - I can't remember) and drag the window to the desired size. The current DPI scaling is VERY limited and completely alters the windows. I was very disappointed by that being removed, as well as the removal of virtual folders (the ability to store a file in one physical place but have it appear in many different folders).

NEway, I use Vista Ultimate x64 as my primary OS - I like it on the desktop because it looks better, the search is much better, it supports DX10 (even though XP should have) and it is supposedly more secure (it's too early to say). However, it is still slower than XP for gaming - I lose 20fps in Counter-Strike: Source.

Vista "has been known to be called" ME ][ btw. Now you know why.
