RAM: 4GB of 667MHz vs 4GB of 800MHz?

Recommended Posts

I currently have 2GB of 667MHz RAM in my machine (my processor runs a 1066FSB):

- Would I be best to up it to 800MHz and add 2GB? or

- Should I just add the 2GB of 667MHz?

Money is always an issue lol, so I don't want to spend extra dollars if I wont see and performance difference worth the money I spend. Thanks!

(And yes, I'm running Vista x64 so I can use more than 3.5GB of RAM.)

800MHz is good but 667 is ok. You probably wouldn't notice the difference unless you constantly monitor your frames per second in your games or sit there like a hawk ticking down the seconds until your movies transcode.

For a long time I ran 4GB of 1,200MHz RAM but my RAM eventually died from over-volting. Then I purchased 4x800MHz and I seriously couldn't tell a performance difference. My score is lower in Benchmarks but in real world usage I didn't notice anything.

there really isnt any advantage to going above 2 Gig to justify the cost...

Its like OC-ing (law of diminishing returns) the higher up you go ...@ a certain point your improvement is less and less. There are plenty of studies and comparisons showing that there really isnt a good enough improvement to justify the cost of going higher than 2 Gb

Are you buying 2GB of 800mhz to add to the 2GB of 667mhz or buying 4GB of 800mhz? If you're adding the 800mhz to the 667mhz then there no point getting 800mhz as it will only run at 667mhz.

The noticable difference will come from having twice as much ram, not from having slightly faster ram.

It really depends what your doing with your PC. For instance running Crysis sucks up 1.4GB of my RAM. I have enough to let it breath and I get excellent performance. If I had 2GB part of that game would be getting stuck in page files and diminish performance.

I also noticed less lag when playing Garrys Mod, A source based mod for HL2. When playing levels with thousands of models spawned it easily ate over a gig of memory and I had sever lag playing that with 2GB of RAM on Vista, but when I upgraded to 4GB, the Lag was completely gone.

I'm just talking games here which are relevant to the original poster I believe? But there are also many other application benefits, video editing, photoshop etc if your doing a lot of demanding tasks it really can't hurt to beef up your memory capacity. SuperFetch also makes good use of idle ram by pre-caching applications you frequently use.

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
