New Onkyo HD-DVD player a re-badget Toshiba HD-XA2?

Recommended Posts

"The crew at AreaDVD.de took the screwdriver to the Onkyo DV-HD805 and were none too surprised to find a Toshiba HD-XA2 laying inside the Onkyo-badged packaging. There has been quite a bit of speculation around the "heritage" of this player, so the results of the teardown aren't too surprising. Still, we would like to know what specific tweaks were made to the HD-XA2 to justify the $899 MSRP. At least Onkyo didn't do anything harmful to the player design; our rusty German leads us to believe the AreaDVD gang liked what they saw and heard from the unit despite the finish of the cabinet being "not quite as opulent as" as the HD-XA2. All this makes the HD-XA2 look like a relative bargain among the high-spec HD DVD players."

So the HD-XA2 is an even better deal than what was first thought...interesting.

But the XA2 is the second generation of player... I was hoping that Toshiba would be out with the XA3 by now (to follow with the A3, A30, A35).

The A35 don't seem to have the high quality Reon HQV processing. So I hope that the A35 is not replacing the XA2...

XA3 is coming. That's why A35 doesn't have Reon.

Unlike what some sites are posting in the specs the A30 actually only has HDMI 1.2. Therefore you can only send out a decoded pcm track to your receiver.

The A35 on the other had has HDMI 1.3 and can do HBR audio. Meaning you can bitstream over hdmi to you receiver and let it do the decoding of the new audio formats. This is of course provided you have a new receiver with hdmi 1.3 that can decode them.

Thats the main reason for the price increase.

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
