Terminator Salvation : The Future Begins

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the film and I absolutly loved it. I don't know whats wrong with people saying it was pointless, it tied in alot of important parts of the series. True there were a few things that were not needed but overall I thought it was great and the CG was right up there with Transformers. :) I give it a 8/10. Can't wait til the next one in 2011.

Tied into the series, yes, but the storyline had almost no impact on what happens in the next movie really.

Well you could technically say the same thing about the 1st film in terms of the 2nd. Nothing in the first hinted at the events of the 2nd except that Skynet wouldn't stop until Connor was dead. Great writing pieced in the rest. Like the poster above you, I enjoyed the film. I loved how evil and frightening they made the future look. Being hunted and exterminated is something that wasn't shown in a large scale in the other 3 films.

Did anyone else notice in the beginning helicopter scene where the Terminator takes off Bale's shoe? Two seconds later, the camera pans up and he magically has his shoe again. :p

The movie was very disappointing. The action scenes were great on in the theater, but the story itself was just "meh". 6.5/10

How the hell did the resistance have jets and copters? Aren't these networked by computers? And also the full blown obvious bases where they stored these. Why didn't skynet just send a few bots and wipe out the bases? This really ticked me off in the movie.

The series is now crippled to me after T2. The show was horrible T3 and T4 was horrible.

The series needs a reboot with a different character.

The movie should of been based on T2's vision of the future.

I don't know??? Stek Trek didn't suck without Will Shatner. The kid they picked for Captain Kirk is perfect. He even has some of shatners mannerisms. LOL

Is it me or does all movies that have scfi involved recently have time travel lol

Agreed,

They did kinda mess up on the whole time traveling thing with first terminator. The Jets and copters are here because this is Just after SkyNet, became aware, and took over the planets defense systems. watch the other films in sucession, and it will make sense to ya.

Maybe I'm over thinking it. But I thought skynet was in every computer. Fighter jets have GPS systems and computers from the Air Force built into them. So skynet should of been able to hack them.

Maybe I'll go watch S. Darko now. Wait did holywood screw that one up to. GAHHHHH

They did kinda mess up on the whole time traveling thing with first terminator.

I understand why they did it at the time because we knew our computers in 1984 were not quite capable of supporting such a system but that the pace of innovation in the late 70s and early 80s that our world was moving quickly to a time where complex artificial intelligence systems would have the required computing power to operate, that all our systems would become more and more intertwined through military networks, and that military technology would evolve to include pilotless drones and remotely operated field combat ground units. However, we're now at the point where if you did a hard reboot with the franchise, you could drop the time travel angle altogether. The story could keep some of the familar names and iconic looks of the machines but have the freedom to rewrite skynet and judgment and give the franchise a new direction.

Time travel is crucial to Terminator. If Kyle never goes back, John never existed. That must remain true in the series. Reboot or not, that's the anchor that ties everything together. As for the military bases and jets. Like Fire said, this is several years after judgement day the machines haven't gotten a stranglehold yet and their arguably outnumbered. They don't have as many as they need. We saw the plants so the next film we should see them all marching together. So these bases were left untouched as Skynet didn't want to venture to far. Quote from the movie, "They've never come out this far before, they must be looking for something." I think people expected to see the war hinted in the other movies. McG made it very clear from the beginning that this wasn't that war, it was the start of it. Hell the thread title still has the original title and that says it all.

And I still disagree with everyone that says it needs/needed to be more like the originals. We already had 3 movies based around that same idea. I know we all love Terminator and all but don't you want something more than the same ideas rehashed in a new environment?

Sure, I want something new. I just don't want it to bore me to tears and be so horribly written (or, as seen from a previous post, changed).

Bore you to tears  Cmon man it wasn't that bad!

I agree the writing was weaker than it should be. But I liked the premise of it, it was a nice change from the previous films. As for it being changed, I think it was changed for the better, if the original had killed off Connor it would ruin the other movies. They can kill him or make him a cyborg at the end of the other 2 films but it doesn't make sense do such a thing in the 1st of the 3. Especially with Connor supposably the star of all 3. However had they done that, the movie would have gotten a massive reaction and probably made more money but so would it, had it featured a lesbian sex scene :D

The first 1/2 of the movie didn't bore me to tears. The second half, however, I was literally yawning and looking around the theater to see if anyone was even paying that much attention.

I liked the premise of the movie was well. I just prefered the premise for the original draft before Bale had Nolan ruin it. I think if they had killed off Connor it would've been a far better ending. It does make a lot of sense if the person replacing him was once human and thinks like a human and has the heart of a human -- not to mention has his face.

I have to disagree, Kyle's back travel and John's presence as leader is completely irrelevant to the franchise. Pass the torch to the feminine hero Sarah Connor, who just happens to have a son named John. Time travel was the stupid notion that each time they send someone back in time, the past changes, alters the future, and nullifies the previous time line, which in turn if those events never occur then how can the future change. I hate the stupid paradox that surrounds the whole notion, and the reality of a terminator and artificial intelligence is diluted with silliness borrowed from a bad Star Trek episode with time travel, it simply takes away from the plausible reality that machines could actually take over the world.

Why do they need to time travel? Make it 2010 and have the machines become self aware. John Conner can still exist.

Those were good points about Marcus' character Aye, it could have worked out although I'm glad it played out the way it did :$

And Budious/Pixil. How can Connor still exist if he was never born? Kyle was born either just after or just before judgement day. Sarah was dead already she couldn't have given birth to John unless Kyle had gone back to protect her. She could still have had a son sure, but he wouldn't have had the same father, thus being a different person. Time travel connects Kyle with Sarah, Sarah with John and John with Kyle as confusing as time travel stories can be, this is still relatively clear. Without time travel Kyle never meets Sarah as they were born in 2 completely different era's. Sarah would be old enough to be his grandmother by the time he was born.

Besides if we're talking bout how good the old movies were, they ALL originated from time travel. Time travel is hinted as the final technological leap the machines make. It was only when they were at their weakest point they discovered it and then attempted to save themselves by using it. When this is finally shown in the movies they will have completed the full circle linking the past with the future and vice versa. I suspect it will be hinted at in the next but only truly see it linking the other movies in the final (6th film)

While I agree time travel can really mess up timelines and events I absolutely love Terminator's use of it. The son teaching his father how to fight the machines then send him back in time to teach his mom who then teaches him about the war he's already been living in. He creates himself and teaches himself, or at the very least caused the chain reaction resulting in that.

Do you know a reboot doesn't have to go page to page along the original movie, if it does then it's called a remake! You can do away with the Connors altogether and come up with a new hero if you wanted a completely fresh approach, basically all a reboot needs to adhere to is some of the fundamental iconic elements that make up the core of the franchise, and from those you have a lot of freedom to pick and choose at will.

If I did a reboot, I'd start by eliminating time travel, make Sarah Connor as a sub-contractor working on a DoJ project for skynet development. She's an intelligent woman who sounds the alarm that skynet may become self aware and top officials shrug her off. Sarah Connor, is married to retired Army Ranger, Sam Connor. The two have a young son, John. Fearing that a test of the skynet system will prove the system is self aware, Sarah takes sensitive documents as to the design and specifications out of the base. The military discovers her security breach and she's forced to take her family on the run, meanwhile, the test is carried out and skynet becomes self aware and initiates Judgment day. Sarah Connor providers her expertise on the skynet projects to the resistance and becomes an essential member of the leadership. Eventually, the terminators come to eliminate the resistance leaders, Sam and John witness the death of Sarah but are not themselves targets of the terminators. Sam and the remaining resistance go underground with most of their conventional weapons and armored support destroyed. John Connor learns life in the post apocalyptic world the hard way and misses out on a traditional childhood, instead entrenched in the field with his father and other resistance fighters. John eventually rises through the ranks and becomes the leader of the resistance which has suffered tremendous losses and has very few resources left at its disposal. John Connor leads a heroic covert operation deep into skynet's central hub to smash the defense grid.

That's my version on a reboot, but I would settle for a remake of T1 if nothing else. The way Arnold has a comb over haircut up until the Techno bar scene then the movie cuts the ally scene and he now has his iconic spiked hair look has always been my biggest gripe with that movie, a proper remake could put that pre-ally comb over out of it's misery. ;)

I don't know if you guys read this on io9.com, but I thought it pretty good. I have to agree with him about the characters of TSCC they're were, and are just amazing. One that I still think its the best character on the show is Derek Reese (Brian Austin Green was great as Derek) I just wish he in the movies.

Yeah Derek remains my favourite character on SCC when he died I was honestly shocked and stunned.

Derek was nice but they kinda screwed the pooch already. They would to have to mention he had a brother in Salvation. Since he doesn't they can't just go "oh hey, he's got a brother ya know." Besides even if they did it wouldn't have been Brian as he's too old to play the character.

And Budious I think the confusion is this movie wasn't a reboot. It was a continuation. They could consider it a reboot as it's a different take on the franchise but it wasn't a "reboot" like Bond and Batman which scrapped all other movies and started fresh. If anything these are similar to the Star Wars prequels. They follow the same story set in the past movies but show how it all happened. Even though technically these are taking place further in the future they are still prequels :p That time travel you love so much haha.

    • How old is this tip? Seems 15-20 years old? Processor states for the CPU under Windows power options has been a thing for a long, long time. It certainly isn't new or hidden... Also, with laptops it doesn't make any difference what OS you are running, all of them are configured for battery longevity over performance, for obvious reasons.
    • I can't believe Starmer is still there...his party lost so big. He's a stubborn coot, but this is largely unenforceable, so I would imagine he'll be resigning soon. A key here is for parents to buy their kids phones sans Internet access--and set up the Internet at home, where mom and day can, you know, act like parents instead expecting the government to raise their kids.
    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
