Goldman Sachs says second-gen iPhone is in "final design phase," Apple TV to get LCD screen

We're not certain why anyone treats the inevitable arrival of a second-gen iPhone sometime next year as earth-shattering news, but Goldman Sachs released a note to clients yesterday saying that the rumored 3G version is in its "final design phase." The investment firm's David Bailey says he got the info from the usual assortment of moderately-reliable Asian component suppliers, and that he expects the new model to have "similar form factor" with a "different look." Rounding out his list of obvious predictions, Bailey also said the existing model will get a capacity bump sometime next year as well, which makes sense given the proliferation of 32GB flash devices we've seen pop up lately. Somewhat more interestingly, Bailey also said that Apple is planning on retooling the Apple TV next year, and that his sources the new version may pack an LCD screen. Sadly, Bailey didn't have much to say about that rumored subnotebook, only that he's heard of possible "design issues." That doesn't sound too promising -- but we're certain Steve will fill us in next month.

Nice :D I'm interested in that LCD now :s

Different design, 3G support and a higher capacity?

Does it mean that it will keep the same firmware (OS X mobile)?

It'd be a good thing, because if they roll out a mobile OS X version 2 that isn't compatible with 1st-gen iPhones, I know a bunch of people who are going to be angry...

Anyway, the capacity factor makes me want to have an iPhone even more... but I live in the underdevelopped country of Canada, so no iPhone for us yet. :(

Edit : If you put an LCD screen on the Apple TV with touch capabilities, wouldn't that make some kind of sub notebook? It has a part of OS X already (maybe they could add the rest).... anyway it would be a fugly idea maybe, but who knows.

I completely agree, but isn't that the way Apple has always done it? I don't believe any iPod firmware could be used (without hacking) on whatever generation came before. The iPhone should be no different.

This is great news!!! I've been waiting forever for a 3G iPhone! I just hope that it's out within a few months or I'm afraid Apple will be behind again. Verizon will be rolling out their new 4G network for testing starting early 2008...

The iPhone news isn't surprising, but I really doubt that the AppleTV will be getting an LCD screen. It doesn't seem practical in my opinion.

We'll just have to wait until Macworld, I guess ;)

    • Microsoft is bringing a much-needed Recap app to Teams, here is a first look by Usama Jawad Microsoft Teams is heavily used in work and school environments, and perhaps one of its core but extremely useful features is the ability to record meetings. In past years, Microsoft has further improved upon this functionality by integrating AI, but you do need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to leverage most, if not all, all of those capabilities. Now, the Redmond tech firm is making another significant enhancement in the area of Teams meeting recordings. Up until now, if you wanted to access Teams recordings, you had to arduously locate the meeting invite and navigate to the dedicated tab, or go to the cloud storage location such as a SharePoint site. This was a rather overwhelming activity, especially if you don't remember the name of the meeting or the meeting occurred quite a while ago. Microsoft is now attempting to solve this problem through a dedicated Recap app that consolidates all your recordings. This centralized experience will allow users to find all recordings from the past 30 days and also offer access to other related services such as transcripts and AI-powered summaries. Customers will have the option to search for recordings, filter them, and review multiple meetings by generating AI-powered podcast-style recaps. The Recap app will list all available recordings in both thumbnail and list views. The former is shown below: And here is how Teams users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can select multiple recordings to generate a podcast-style audio recap: Microsoft has emphasized that the Recap app is pre-installed in Teams but it will not be pinned by default. Users will able to navigate to the Teams app store from the left rail, and pin it from the apps section. It will be enabled by default for all users once it becomes available. It's worth noting that while Teams recordings and transcripts can be accessed by all users governed by existing permissions, AI-powered features like intelligent summaries, audio recaps, and video recaps will require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The Recap app will be generally available to Teams users on Windows, Mac, and the web by the end of next month, with mobile support coming soon.
