UnaBonger
I have some DNS questions pertaining to the new server package... My application log is filling up with 1054 errors (DNS errors). I know where my misconfiguration is but cant quite figure out how to correct it. Here's the senario... I installed Server 2003 Installed Active Diretory (used the "configure your server" wizard and created a domain controller). This is where it gets a little flakey... In network properties, I assigned a static IP and pointed DNS to itself (the same static IP). At this point I was unable to connect to the internet. Thinking it has something to do with forwarders In the DNS mmc, I right clicked on my server and went into the properties. selected "Create A New Server" and created a new "forward lookup zone". I pointed the new zone to use my ISP's DNS servers. Still no internet connection. in Network Properties, I changed my DNS server to use my ISP's (this I know is where my problems are coming from. It really should be pointing to itself). viola... Internet access What did I do wrong? What do I need to change?
Jason
Have you added a reverse lookup zone ?
tomwarren Veteran Posted January 24, 2003 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2003 You could add forwarders to your ISPs DNS servers so all DNS requests get forwarded to your ISP.
UnaBonger
Have you added a reverse lookup zone ? No, Should I? I thought that a reverse lookup zone was just for internal resolution. That doesnt seem to be a problem.

Glowstick
You don't necessarily need the forwarders. All root servers are registered in Windows' DNS server. Your ISPs DNS server will just act as relay to those, so why not bypass your ISP. Saves you a lot of trouble when their DNS servers are down.
