the latest AV-Comparatives test is out (August-2008) and there are quite a few surprises. what stands out the most is that Norton is a great contender now and NOD32 came out 8th with no longer an Advanced+ certification. this complicates things for me now that my NOD32 license is about to expire.

I see three options for me:

- Stay with NOD32.

- Go with Avira that is number 1 right now.

- Go with Norton which has improved quite a lot.

I will have to admit, Symantec is finally getting it's revenge. Vastly improved detections, successful implementation of HIPS-like features, and extremely light now in 2009. They also fixed their biggest weakness of slow and infrequent updates with the new pulse updates (thousands of micro-updates a month). Good to see the competition has finally forced them to improve their product.

Firefox blocks it.

Yup...

This web site at www.antivirusxp2008.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences.

I'm using OneCare... It's keeping my computer un-borked just fine and I don't notice it's even there. +1 for Avira for free options though. :)

Recently found interesting antivirus: Antivirus XP 2008

Somebody knows anything about it?

Just in case someone isn't reading all the pages in this thread: DO NOT visit this site. AVXP2008 is malware.

The only thing that worries me about NAV 2009 is the Activation scheme, what if I need to rebuild my PC. How many times can NAV 2009 be re-activated on one PC?

I think you can go to the Norton Account site and remove a PC from your list so you can put it on another.

I tried these antiviruses:

AVG

Trend Micro

Kaspersky

ESET NOD32

AVG Came out with a lot of virus notifications, though the file didn't contain any potential malicious software. I created a .exe file by myself and AVG came out telling me I put a trojan inside. Wow.

I used Tred Micro for a very long time. It was great, if you aren't the typical gamer. Those sudden pop-ups for virus updates can be a pain. Not to mention, these pop-ups do take memory which can be very taxing, especailly playing something like Red Alert 3.

I tried Kaspersky for a day, after reading the reviews. I thought it was good with all the options. But as usual, too much security already. Used up the most amount of memory even when stagnant. And it prevented me from accessing Firefox.

ESET's NOD32 works best for me. It's the kind of AV that everyone should have. It sits at a corner using very little memory, and quietly gives you a notification when it's updated. No sudden pop-us, this notification can even be seen while playing.

By far, NOD32's the best best best. It represents the kind of AV that you can install and forget about it while it does the work for you.

AVG - 6/10 for trying to stop potential viruses

Trend - 8/10 for a good firewall, bad way of updating by pop-ups though

Kaspersky - 2/10 for user-unfriendliness (Kaspersky fans, I understand what you mean :) but I really can't get used to it. sorry)

NOD32 - 9/10. lost the last "1" for it's slow scanning when you want in-depth and everything scanned (not quick)

Well I was using AVG until they came out with version 8 which I didn't like so I removed everything AVG related.

Then I started using Avira for the last couple months. The freaking nag screens are annoying and I hate them. It also stops right in the middle of a scan to tell me that an old version of Unreal Tournament GOTY Edition has a virus (which it doesn't. I know this.) So I tell it to ignore everytime and always ignore but it still comes up and stops at 6% and asks me. It will not continue without user input (sucks). And yes I've tried all the tweaks about the nag screen.

So, today I uninstall Avira and install Symantec AV Corp. Ed. 10.1. It takes up so many resources that it slows my computer down substantially. Annoying. So after 40 minutes of annoyingness I uninstalled it.

Right now I'm rolling with no AV protection and I am considering OneCare or Avast.

I'm not paying for jack anymore. I'm going to either run no Antivirus, deal with a nag screen, or run something free with no nag screen.

So right now I don't have a good vote. ;)

Look at Google Chrome! Less than a month since its release and already a top 5 web browser.

ESET needs more threat analysts and some new blood in the programming team too.

I have a three year license for NOD32 and I hate to think I wasted a lot of money on a product that fails to step up when it's required.

Got my fingers crossed that NOD32 V3.5 or V4 (whatever major release is next), really does something amazing.

    • Rockstar gives last-gen GTA V players free upgrades tomorrow by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Rockstar is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, but ahead of that, the company has revealed a new offer for some Grand Theft Auto V owners. It today announced that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version owners of the 2013-released title will soon be receiving a free upgrade to the current generation version. The studio released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2022, bringing significant upgrades to the original console editions. This included 60 FPS gameplay at up to 4K resolution, as well as major upgrades to textures, draw distance, and audio. Faster load times, ray tracing elements, and HDR support were also added with it. While this new and enhanced version needed a new purchase of the game to jump in, now Rockstar has decided to make it a free upgrade, dropping the $40 price tag entirely on consoles. "Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTA V and GTA Online," said the company in an official blog post. The free upgrade offer will be released tomorrow, June 18, for all Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners of Grand Theft Auto V. Players who will be jumping in on the offer will want to check how to migrate their GTA Online profile from last-generation to current-generation consoles by heading over here. The offer lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist hitting Grand Theft Auto Online, where players and crews will be tasked with stealing priceless international art from a prestigious gallery in Pacific Bluffs. It doesn't look like Rockstar plans to stop updating its previous game even with Grand Theft Auto VI being on the horizon. The latest title is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

    • Rufus 4.15.2391 Beta by Razvan Serea Rufus is a small utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need! Oh, and Rufus is fast. For instance it's about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer or Windows 7 USB download tool, on the creation of a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO (with honorable mention to WiNToBootic for managing to keep up). It is also marginally faster on the creation of Linux bootable USBs from ISOs. A non-exhaustive list of Rufus supported ISOs is available here. It can be especially useful for cases where: you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.) you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS you want to run a low-level utility Rufus 4.15.2391 Beta changelog: Improve the guards for using the "silent" option Improve the ability to cancel during write retries Fix unrestricted XML entity expansion and integer overflow in ezxml parser (courtesy of @esadowski4) [GHSA-55r2-34wg-8mv9] Fix "silent" Windows installation failing at 75% in most cases [#2960] Fix a crash during boot when using UEFI:NTFS on Snapdragon X based ARM64 platforms [#2934] Fix the first WUE option always being checked by default [#2965] Fix an infinite loop when using Windows ISOs that contain multiple WIMs Fix "Enable runtime UEFI media validation" checkbox not always being properly enabled Other WUE improvements/fixes for OneDrive removal and username validation (with thanks to @christian8641) [#2984, #2991] Download: Rufus 4.15 Beta | 1.9 MB (Open Source) Links: Rufus Home Page | Project Page @GitHub | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • Media Player Classic - Home Cinema 2.7.3 by Razvan Serea Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free and open-source video and audio player for Windows. MPC-HC is based on the original Guliverkli project (which is no longer maintained) and contains many additional features and bug fixes. As the continuation of the original Media Player Classic, MPC-HC isn’t flashy but it works with nearly any media format. MPC-HC uses DXVA technology to pass decoding operations to your modern video card, enhancing your viewing experience. And MPC-HC supports both physical and software DVDs with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles. Overview of features A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about: Dark interface Menu > View > Dark Theme When using dark theme it is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons. Options > Advanced Video preview on the seekbar Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seek bar Adjust playback speed Menu > Play > Playback rate The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%): Options > Playback > Speed step Adjusting playback speed works best with the internal audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction. Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer MPC-HC can remember playback position, so you can resume from that point later Options > Player > History You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel. You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown. You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player. Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting) Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only) A-B repeat - You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers. You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video Menu > View > Pan&Scan This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below). There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well. Options > Player > Keys Tip: there is a search box above the table. You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites Put yt-dlp.exe or youtube-dl.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder. Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder. Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced This includes an option to specify the location of the .exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder. Play HDR video This requires using madVR or MPC Video Renderer. After installation these renderers can be selected here: Options > Playback > Output Ability to search for and download subtitles, either automatically or manually (press D): Options > Subtitles > Misc Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema 2.7.3 changelog: Updated LAV Filters to version 0.82 Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.10.4.2550 Updated MPC Audio Renderer A few crash fixes, bug fixes and small improvements.
