PerfectDisk 2008 Professional

the only thing i dont like about pd is that i need to do constant offline defrags alot i am glad the 2008 one will have a semi automatic defrag where if it is inactive however long u set it it will defrag if needed,i liked dk cuzz i never had to do offline defrags but i am always changing from 1 to another,i want one that is automatic meaning i dont have to deal with it.

as a registered user, i've just got the upgrade key and download. it is much faster than version 8, but *why o why* have they used the ribbon interface?

i thought the whole idea of the ribbon interface was a way to put loads and loads of options into context sensitive tabs (al a ms office), perfectdisk only has a couple of buttons, it makes the interface quite clunky. sure, it *looks* better than the previous version (which looked like it was running under the classic win 98 theme), but the ribbon interface is just not appropriate for a defrag tool - all those options could be stuck in menus saving a shed load of screen space.

but like i said earlier, overall though speed improvements.

Agreed (except in the part that it looks better). If you're on XP, could you provide a screenshot under Classic mode? Thanks.

whats wrong with 'windows defragmenter' ? snake oil anyone ?

Snake oil is a weak argument, especially against a product that many at Microsoft purchase. If it was snake oil, it wouldn't be purchased by millions of informed users...

Windows defrag can't do a complete job, doesn't use aggressive techniques, and in some cases leaves you scratching your head saying 'WTF' (as in Vista.)

The build I have is '39', it's not beta and it is downloaded from the Raxco ftp.

yes, your right, its available via the ftp

pdbeta1/PD2008_WS.exe...so you decide and then see what build # is released on the 29th or soon there after.

I was told this is still beta..maybe they are going to now make it 'gold' and move it out of the beta folder...but my guess is look for build 40

ok, thanks for explaining, are there any comparisons/benchmarks that compare 'all' defragmenters ?

You might have noticed that I linked to the public ftp and the file.

There is no build 40, 39 is final and its on the release ftp. Why the speculation?

Every time you use your computer, even when it's brand new, the files on your PC or laptop will continuously become fragmented. This means that these files are split into millions of pieces, and this occurs even more so when you go to add, modify and delete them. So when you go to access a file - even just to read it - it will take much longer than necessary because Windows has to first find each piece of the file before you can even see it. This makes using your computer, and doing everything you want, much slower than it should be. Fragmentation also leads to much slower boot times and will make applications run slow or even potentially cause them to "lock-up" or freeze.

Defragging your computer puts the pieces of your files back together into a single piece - the way they should be. A defragmented computer will boot quicker, files will be accessed faster, and your applications will not hang. A good disk defragger will not only defragment, but will also consolidate the free space on your drives into one large piece so when you create a new file, there will be enough free space to save that file in a single piece, rather than fragmenting right away. Defrag for a faster computer and a healthy PC.

i would like to understand why people use this crap, yes, i've said crap.

This thing is SLOW as hell, takes ages only to analyze the drives and i wonder how long to defrag.

If someone want a advanced defrag tool, then there are NO better than Diskeeper.

I love the Office 2007 UI, but the way they made their own variant is just eww...

If you really want good defrag, try O&O Defrag! The best ever, it's fast, looks good, runs as service, doesn't take performance away with AutoSense, ...

I used Perfectdisk years ago but i must agree with yiu, it keeps getting more bloated and bloated, back then i stopped using it cause it added a startup runtime and it wouldnt work if it was disabled.

But back then it was sure the best, now i just dont use this kind of software anymore, maybe i?ll try diskeeper, lets see how this thread develops i bet many would comment on your words.

Obrigado

Thanks

Yeah, just like there is no better AV than Kaspersky :

Different software satisfies different needs, which satisfy different people. If Diskeeper was the best, no other one would ever exist.

It's all a matter of opinion. But if there are more constructive points to be made, maybe you guys should look at posting your opinions in this thread instead. Just a suggestion...

It's faster, more efficient, has an autopilot mode, has a native 64 bit version, and the interface is far better.

http://www.perfectdisk.com/home_office/hom...ssional.cfm#new (as was already linked to) says more.

Diskeeper has been less well received by the community for various reasons, and every time I've tried to use O&O since V4 I've been sorely disappointed.

It's also substantually more expensive to get multiple licenses for the versions that have all the features. A PerfectDisk 3 PC license is 69.95 and I think I got mine with 20 - 30% off that price. With Diskeeper you get 25% off the individual price which for home is $29.95, professional $49.95, and pro premier $99 and it's the later versions that add alot of the really worthwhile features. Considering I wanted 3 licenses it would have really added up with diskeeper.

the Windows Home Server Edition is even better value

A single copy of PerfectDisk 2008 for Windows Home Server is priced at just $39.99, and also includes a copy of PerfectDisk 2008 Professional for one of your networked PCs. A home site license is also available for just $99.99, and provides a single license of PerfectDisk 8 for Windows Home Server and up to 10 licenses of PerfectDisk 2008 Professional for your network.
so for $99 theres your server and 10 pc's covered.

make no mistake, I liked Diskeeper too but when PerfectDisk cost me (when i purchased) say $50 - $70 for 3 copies with 2 years (I believe) of upgrade protection then financially anyway it's alot cheaper than three copies of the more advanced Diskeeper editions. Perfect Disk may lack alot of the more advanced automation settings, but I really only need it to auto scan when I'm not at the PC which it does with the screensaver mode and outside of that the manual scan is fine.

I could care less if one takes a bit longer, it's a background task after all so it doesnt really matter and the speed is largely due to diskeeper and perfect disk having different ideas about how files should be best laid out on a HD for a defrag. The app being slower won't stop me doing what I need to do in the meantime and if it gets the job done I'm happy.

edit: My other issue with Diskeeper is the 2TB partition limit on the Pro Premier and the stupidly small 768GB Limit for the other versions. With my next Desktop I'm very very seriously looking at having a 3TB raided partition and based on what Diskeeper supports this partition just wouldn't work with the software. With 750GB HD's being so affordable nowdays I think it's unrealistic to keep the 768GB limit on all but the most expensive SDK of the application when even then I don't think the 2TB limit cuts it. I realise it's likely to do with the MBR having a 2TB limit, but with GPT support in Vista for larger partitions I don't see why the software needs to limit you.

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.3 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display.
