The larger screen at the back of the 450D is the most immediately obvious change but the differences run a lot deeper than that.

Let's take a look at the key changes:

* 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor

* SD/SDHC cards

* Larger viewfinder

* Live view mode, including contrast-detect AF

* Improved 9-point AF system

* Spot metering

* 3.0" LCD monitor

* Redesigned menus (including My Menu as seen in 40D)

* Slightly redesigned info display

* Continuous shooting at 3.5fps for up to 53 JPEG (6 RAW)

* ISO setting displays in viewfinder and ISO button

* New, larger, higher capacity battery

* 14 bit A/D converter and processing

* Multi-shot self-timer mode

* Highlight Tone Priority (from 40D)

* Auto Lighting Optimiser (boosts shadows after shooting)

The 14 bit processing is especially impressive--never would've expected that in a Rebel. Spot metering as well. It also looks to have finally improved the grip with some better rubber all around.

Oh and by the way. The ISO button finally at the top! No more taking your eyes off the viewfinder to change it!

hmm, this is interesting. Do I upgrade my xti to a 450d, or to a 5d now...

What do you plan on doing? The 40D for $300 more will still blow away the quality of the 450D, 3 more FPS, more then likley better ISO, 9 cross point, its actually sized like a camera...

dont think so, specs are virtually the same. Both using the DIGIC III, same resolution, ect. Theres only a handful of features the 40d has now that the 450d doesnt. I think I wanna go FF anyways. So I'll just be patient and keep saving up my pennies.

Canon can't do that though, as what would be the point of going to the x0D series. I still think the 400/450D are too small for DSLRs.

Based on speculation, I would assume the 40D has better

AF

Battery Life

ViewFinder

High ISO (40D has 3200, 450D doesnt) plus less noise in low light

6.5FPS vs 3.5FPS

40D is still the sweet spot for sports

The 40D is in a completely different playing field. Body, AF, ergonomics/controls, speed, viewfinder, iso, etc.

40D MSRP - $1300. (Though you can get it for $1100 now)

450D MSRP - $800 (will probably drop down to $700 or so)

There's no reason to spend more if you wouldn't take advantage of the extra features. I'd rather throw that at glass. Get what you need and enjoy.

/me waits for 5D mk II.

Also - Exposure compensation is +/- 3.0 EV!

if the 5D MKII has 5FPS+ then it would be an ultimate sports camera on a professional level as I think it has better ISO then the Mark III, right?

Who knows, probably the same. (the mark III already has great iso performance) The difference will probably be the price ;)

(then again, the 5D should drop in price once mkII hits.)

for sports u need high fps, good af and good iso/noise. the 5dm2 probbaly has 5fps at most and most likely the same 9 point af as the 40d. the 1d series have 45point af and 10 fps.

The new 450D is indeed a useful upgrade from the 400D, if Canon only added in-body image stabilizer (or kept the 10MP sensor size and added higher ISO values or performance) it'd have been the killer starter camera hands down.

Canon/Nikon firmly believe that image stabilization is better optimized for a lens rather than in the body.

I have no problem with that, I actually like the lens based system since it stabilize the viewfinder as well for more precious auto focusing, but I mean for s starter level DSLR camera (this is what Canon market this camera as anyway), a built-in image stabilization will appeal to more customers specially who will not spend too much on IS lenses.

Now I see the lens in the photo is IS so that would be great to include as a kit lens, but still, it's hard for a starter user to afford IS zoom lenses. Otherwise, I find the 450D a very nice camera.

Be real, it's not going to "blow away" the quality levels of a 450D anyday, they both use DigicIII for starters and they are both Canon DSLR cameras so you are getting neck for neck image quality if the same lens is used on both bodies.

The differences where the 40D excels though is body, weather sealing, buffer size, controls layout, ISO speed, dynamics.

I'll buy one on launch day if all goes as planned and post a review :)

BTW the 450D comes with the 18-55 IS lens as standard. the lens itself is very cheap anyway priced at around ?150. 150 for an IS lens is excellent value and the 18-55 is a very sharp lens too and gets good closeups.

Forgive me for my ignorance when it comes to cameras, but I'm just now getting into photography :p Is this camera better than the XTI? I've been debating whether or not to get that camera for my European trip this fall, but I can't make up my mind :wacko:

Both good cameras, decide accordingly based on your budget. The differences and improvements are on the OP. ;)

But right now, you can get a 400D for a really good price.

    • Shocker! It would be crazy to be ready to introduce a "fold" phone but have no plans happening for a followup model.
    • XBOX is at the end of its generational life cycle and wasn't selling much anyway. They need to figure out the pricing for XBOX Helios. However, I'm not buying the DRAM shortage with AI preferring HBM. I think it's industry gouging.
