using shift linux

Recommended Posts

Ive just downloaded shift 0.62 gnome over firefox as i thought it looked rather nice. it downloaded fine and i tried to burn it on to a cdrw using nero. it couldnt burn succesfuly at first so i tried a new disc. same problem. i decided to try imgburn, whilst that burnt the disc fine it couldnt verify the data. i then decided to try burnaware, again the same problem. i redownloaded shift using the torrent just in case the original download had issues, still the same problem. the autorun seems to work but when try and load into it after a reboot im told linux kernal not found. i have since downloaded shift 3 times, burnt it on to 4 discs 9 times with different settings, still no luck. i even tried a different pc just in case my optical drive was the problem, still hasnt worked. any advice?

I have a vista based desktop, and a xp pro laptop with dvd rw drives.

You downloaded via the browser (http/ftp) ? I'm not sure what the proper md5sum is for Shift, to make sure you got exactly the right data without corruption. I think torrents are verified as part of torrent process, might want to try that method.

Once you have a verified a good download, you don't need to guess and try re-downloading. It is good, and you can proceed to the next step, the burn. (Y)

Burn the verified iso image to a CD. Then verify the CD is an exact burn. Most burning software includes this ability. Linux also allows just doing an md5sum on the whole drive, but you might have to find a utility for Windows that can give you an md5sum of the burned CD.

Make sure that the image is burned accurately. You will save headaches and CDs this way.

Then it is all about does Shift boot, or does it not.

Ive just redownloaded the gnome version using utorrent and tried to burn it using nero. im still having the same problem, it is unable to verify the contents of what has been burnt. ive used http download and also verified the md5sum.

You say you verified the md5sum. How? I don't see a value posted on the shift site, so I am not certain what it should be. Where did you get the md5sum from?

Secondly, is the Nero error where it is "unable to verify the contents" mean that Nero isn't burning what it should? It sounds like it is comparing what it reads off the disk with the original file you downloaded, and they aren't matching. If this is so, then the problem is your burn.

EDIT: I see the md5sum now. I had to click as if I were downloading, myself.

MD5 sum: 9a7529e60bb6643011c315c55db26c09

thanks for replying. ive also tried using two other burning engines just to make sure, and it seems to burn fine, but when it comes to verifying the data it claims to have a unrecoverable error.

Did you try burning at a lower speed?

It sounds like that is where the problem is. At least you can confirm the download is OK, and you don't need to waste time re-downloading.

Just tried that, seems like shift linux is just not for me :(

I can't imagine that any other file would suddenly burn right. The iso is just a file. Not sure why your app cannot burn it.

Try ripping your XP CD into an iso file, and see if you can re-burn and verify that iso. I'm pretty sure that it will fail, too.

You can also check the contents of the CD using "Check CD for defects" on the boot menu (at least, that should work, I remember setting it up when I was closing off the ISO).

I downloaded via http:firefox. The first CD I used *phillips cd-r* gave me an error with Nero when burning the ISO. I tired a second cd-r and it worked that time.. the burn process was REALLY slow for some reason though at 24x 3,600.
