"Integrated" Vista Install (Not Slipstream!)

Recommended Posts

Someone posted how to do a "Integrated install" on another forum i frequent so i just wanted to see if anyone knows about this or have tested it.

This is installing Vista RTM then applying the SP1 RTM exe to that but in "SysPrep" mode. Benefits is that you free up space that SP1 would have taken over.

  • Boot of the Vista DVD as you normally would.
  • Install Vista has you normally would.
  • The screen to enter your name, password and to select a picture will pop up over some time.
  • DO NOT ENTER ANYTHING IN (YET)!
  • Press: CTRL-SHIFT F3
  • Your computer will reboot and enter "Audit Mode". You will be at the Vista Desktop with a SYSPREP window opened. Do not close it, just ignore it.
  • Install Vista SP1. Use the stand alone version of Vista SP1 to install.
  • After SP1 is installed the computer will reboot and you will be back at the Vista Desktop with the SYSREP Window (Ignore SYSREP again for now).
  • From here open a command window (window key + R and then type CMD). Then type in "vsp1cln". This will clean your SP1 install and recover ~1.5 gigs of hard drive space.
  • Once your clean up is done go to the SYSPREP window and select to boot into OOBE. DO NOT SELECT "Generalize". Press Reboot.

Your computer will reboot and you will be back at the Vista setup screen to enter your name, password and select a picture.

The rest of the install is as usual.

I have found this way to be the best way to install SP1.

I haven't tested this yet but for people that hate the "upgrade" feeling such as i do but don't want to install that ISO out there that's been slipstreamed (like i have :D ). Slipstreaming SP1 is my choice if i could so i'm just waiting for a final ISO or the DVDs released with SP1 already slipstreamed from Micorosoft.

Don't go through all that hassle, that is reverse engineering SP1 and may not be exactly the same as a proper SP1 integrated image.

Just download an image off the net just now (32/64bit been available since 4th of Feb), or wait for it directly from MS.

The thing is I own the Spanish version of Vista Home Premium, I reverse-integrated SP1 and built a home-made "integrated" Vista SP1 Spanish disc. If I knew my version is the same as the one Microsoft will release, I would install it right now. But I have a feeling something might go wrong if I install it or the performance might not be exactly the same.
