What is the true purpose of StarCraft 2?

Recommended Posts

So I been watching www.gametrailers.com for StarCraft 2 related videos and I just feel that StarCraft 2 isnt about ... StarCraft 2 the sequel to StarCraft but more of a promo for StarCraft the MMORPG

Why? here are some thoughts:

1. It looks outdated, everything about it fits in 2003-2004 not 2008, its been 10 years and the game looks cartonnish and totally out of scale (capital ships the size of tanks anyone?)

2. The briefing and debriefing areas and player dialogues in story mode like here http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23196.html , I have no doubt Blizzard spent more time on what looks to me an updated WoW engine than on the RTS part of the game, even though its possible they are the same like in World in Conflict.

3. Blizzard have an hidden project , most assume it is a new MMORPG

4. WoW - no secret how much money Blizzard made from it, I'm sure they are aware of how much money SCMMO will make

5. The most important one! there no doubt the Zerg are not a very playable MMO race untill this video came - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/31707.html - listen to what Kerrigan says about evolution of the zerg, in my eyes its about the evolution to a playable MMO race ;)

While SC mmo is something that I'd like to play - on condition it is nothing like WoW ( a game directed at not very bright kids , sorry wow players :p )

I'm afraid it will hurt SC2, something I been actually fanatically expecting to since 1998.

Hope for best , expect the worse... my motto in gaming and it never fails.

Good Night all its 04:52 and I gotta get some sleep!

I thoguht they shoud have done the thing where in recent RTS, single units are actually a group of multiple units. On screen it looks so friggin awsome seeing all these units fighting. Think LOTR

Blizzard has never been about pushing a games graphics. The lighting in S2 is pretty damn good at this point in the games life. But honestly, Blizzard's games have ALWAYS been about fun, gameplay, dare i say story?

+1. I would like to add that this allows everyone who have from mid range gaming computers to high end computers to play it = lots of sales for SC2.

Exactly. Completely forgot to mention that, yet that was the main purpose of my replying :D I can play any Blizzard game on my laptop with built-in graphics...kudos to them for caring about us.

Im seeing the main purpose of this this game is that.. Starcraft has come along way since its time and deserves to get back into the gaming world as it has almost faded away as other bigger games have come out i.e Warcraft 3 and various other big titles..

As for the relation to the reviews on Gamespot, I do not see how you can complain with the graphics of the game, if you refer back to Starcraft the graphics were not great but the game play was awesome, Starcraft 2 is all about bring back the good old times into the new world..

With the campaign's which have the new briefing and debriefing style, is awesome.. As someone already said Blizzard is all about the game play and the story line not about fancy graphics and animations!

Correct me if iam wrong but why would you not consider Starcraft2 when it comes out.. it will be WICKED!! :)

It looked ok to me. Anyway about scale. I dont see how it can ever be too realistic given that a huge ship is likely a million times larger than a foot trooper. It's more just got to symbolise what it's supposed to be. Hell CnC3 had the same sort of thing going on more or less as has all the RTS I've played (not a huge number but enough)

Anyway I haven't seen alot of content, but I imagine it's likely a souped up warcraft 3 engine as opposed to a modified WoW one which would explain the slightly dated look. I personally didn't think it looked bad but.

^^ Yes, Yes....

Anyways, SC2 will be huge, and blizzard is doing its best to do the orignal justice, by giving the public a proper sequel. Thus, you definitely won't be seeing an MMO anytime soon, it'll be a disservice to the fans at this point in time.

Graphically, it looks great, dunno what your talking about, better than Tiberium. Though it isn't meant to be the best graphically, Blizzard tries to have its games run on most computers, not just the latest and greatest.

I hoping that it is an exact follow-on to SC+SC:BW...

The original Starcraft is very much one of the greatest games ever made and I really can't wait to jump into the sequel.

I think Blizzard should keep it true to it's roots, you know full well if they don't make it well the Korean's will go totally batsh*t barmy about it

As to the mmo idea, whilst its a intersting idea, I hope that they don't do it... Personally I feel that Warcraft is better for online and Starcraft is more suited to RTS Single player action and LAN gaming...

I have fond memories of playing it against friends using the awesome mp idea of "spawning" it on other machines so they didn't have to own the game to play on a LAN

Think of SC2 as SC1.5 and you'll sleep good tonight.

Right, and let's call Call of Duty 2 Call of Duty 1.5, and every EA game by 1.x.

The plot continues from brood war, and graphically you can see how they've kept it a lot like in SC. This is exactly like COD, where the gameplay feels always like call of duty regardless if you play 1 or 2 or 4. Why change what works and what people enjoy? Would SC2 be something fully 3d (and ****ty)?

I doubt the SC2 engine has much to do with the Warcraft 3 engine, with the latter being what, 8 years old by now? SC2 engine is full DirectX 9, it has normal mapping, soft shadows, it does thousands of individual units onscreen... it's a fully-fledged modern graphical engine. There's no comparison possible with the old DX8 WC3 engine. It's like comparing Morrowind with Oblivion?. (worse than that actually)

I also doubt they are developping SC2 to prepare for a SC MMO, developping an MMORPG is a totally different challenge with different technical requirements as well, at best the only thing they could re-use from SC2 is a couple of models, textures, storyline... but that's not much.

So enough with the stupid conspiracy theories for today.: If SC2 is ANYTHING like SC was, it's going to be the best RTS ever made.

If SC2 is ANYTHING like SC was, it's going to be the best RTS ever made.

Starcraft was, and always will be the BEST RTS ever made.

been out for years and years, and still being played, and it was fairly well balanced.

i thought brood war unbalanced the game, and i didnt like it.

i doubt they will release sc mmo anytime soon..it would compete with their own product too much.

and am i the only one who thinks sc2 looks good? thankfully they are not making it to be run only on the most powerfull pc's.

and dont mind scaling issue at all. most games have it.

You know what, Warcraft 2 was the best Warcraft RTS until WC3, and Diablo was the best Diablo game until Diablo 2. I don't doubt Blizzard's ability to do a better Starcraft. After all there are several improvements I can think for SC just out of my head:

Technically:

- SC is limited to 640x480 256 colours,

- there's no way to make it display properly on a widescreen display (it's too old to be pillarboxed by the drivers)

- Battle.net for Starcraft is seriously archaic - it's often unresponsive, no way to sort games other than by type, organising a game with friends is cumbersome

- Slow on shared internet connections

- Poor framerate at speeds slower than "fastest"

- Anti-hack methods not good enough - I see hackers nearly every day I log on to bnet

Gameplay:

- Can only select 12 units at a given time. If you ever tried to control 150 zerglings on a money map with that kind of control scheme you know what kind of frustration I'm talking about.

- Poor pathfinding in tight spaces - just look at what Age of Empires 2 achieved in that regard 2 years after

- Map maxes too easily

The game would be a must-have, as like any other Blizzard game. If there is a company that clearly deserves the title "best maker" it surely is Blizzard (Although Valve is very close). All of their released games (they have more than ten unreleased games) have been hit when they were released, and some still are.

Consider StarCraft 2 as a new mix to the story introduced by StarCraft, and as an update to the "always sure" game in WCG and many other worldwide tournaments.

About StarCraft MMO: That could happen, but not until StarCraft 2 is nearly two or more years old. Blizzard are already working on a "secret project", we'll just have to wait and see. If a SC2 MMO is really the next Blizzard project, I don't doubt that it would be a great game.

    • Here's how to watch Summer Game Fest 2026 and what to expect from the 2-hour showcase by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June game showcase schedule is packed, and with the Sony event already behind us, it's time for the next major presentation to come in swinging. Later today, Geoff Keighley will be bringing the 2026 edition of Summer Game Fest live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the Summer Game Fest showcase livestream will be kicking off at 2 PM PT | 5 PM ET | 10 PM BST later today, June 5. The jam-packed show is slated to run for about two hours, with platforms like YouTube (4K at 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, or X being available for catching it. Like in previous years, separate streams featuring American Sign Language and Descriptive Audio are available on YouTube as well. Keighley has only dropped a few teasers about what gaming fans can expect to see at the show. This includes a new look at Star Wars Zero Company from EA, a major announcement from Guild Wars developer ArenaNet, more Clutch gameplay, and some sort of Sega presence. As for fan expectations, there is hype building about a Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 reveal here, and we might see new details about announced games like Alien Isolation 2 as well. If you want even more games, keep in mind that right after the main kickoff event, the Day of the Devs showcase will begin its own festivities at 4 pm PT | 7 pm ET. This is focused entirely on upcoming indie games. Following this, the next major games showcase is slated to happen on June 7. Here, Microsoft is bringing the big guns with its Xbox Games Showcase and Gears of War E-Day Direct. Check out the full calendar for all of the June events over here.

    • I think the car analogy is more this: Left hand drive, basic commands on the left side of the infotainment screen. Right hand drive, basic commands on the right side of the infotainment screen. Granted, you're not swapping between the two often so it's doesn't really work. But it's to do with the proximity of you (your mouse, or the driver) to the controls.
    • I mean, the old one was broken and so stupidly complex for many users, so I don't see that as a feasible option. A context menu needs to be simple to use, and for me the Windows 11 style actually worked really well for me, and many others. I used to have to scroll the damn context menu just to get to "file properties" in Windows 10. That was not a good experience, and I'm sure you'd agree. What they're trying to do is make it the best of both worlds, as clearly you'd prefer the Win10 style. I'm curious how they're going to do this.
