I've posted this as a Windows update, i didn't know the Mac Safari was on the same version, actually i've think it was on a bigger number version. Maybe you should fixed the title to "Safari 3.1 Final for Windows" and the other thread to "Safari 3.1 Mac", at least users will have a thread to discuss about both versions, since Windows is not the same as Mac, which means that even the same version can have bugs in one and not in the other. :blink:

Did I read that right? Gecko based?

eh? Firefox IS Gecko, Safari IS Gecko too, the "engine" is not Firefox but Gecko, and it's not hard to see that Safari IS Gecko, all is similar to Firefox, even when Apple try to "hide" what is the engine of Safari <.<

Safari uses the WebKit engine. The other thread was closed because this one already existed and Safari is multi-platform.

Ok, i tough is was Gecko because it's pretty similar to Firefox. FAIL :laugh:

I know Safari is multi-platform, but the link is for Windows only. :-/

For some reason by version of Safari 3.1 goes to 53 out of 100 and crashes. But I'm on a mac. :blink:

You need to use the WebKit nightly in conjunction with Safari 3.1 to get the higher score on Acid 3.

uh, guys Acid3 isn't a performance test in case you didn't know, most of the code on acid3 isn't being used on websites, it will be in a little while, acid3 is a webstandard test .

Running the SunSpider Benchmark I get the following results:

  • Safari 3.1 final: Total: 6403.8ms +/- 3.7%
  • WebKit nightly: Total: 3558.6ms +/- 0.3%
  • Firefox 3.0b5pre: Total: 3520.0ms +/- 0.5%

Benchmarked on iMac 20", 2.0 GHz Core2Duo, 2 GB RAM.

Safari is a welcome addition to all the browser available. I prefer it to opera. Sometimes my connection is very slow (because of the ISP, or some websites). Safari handle this situation better than other browsers. Otherwise I surf usually with Firefox, when connection is "normal".

Yup, it will do. Thats the build number of Safari itself. The actual WebKit engine though is different in the nightlies. In effect, running the WebKit nightly uses the currently installed Safari build as the front end GUI but with the newer more up-to-date WebKit engine.

Do any of you know the software that automatically installs the latest webkit nightly?

If you are on Windows, all you have to do is run the run-nightly-webkit.cmd file once you copy all the files and folders to your Safari directory. It then installs the updated files and runs the browser (and a terminal window, which you can safely close once the browser opens)

Has the memory improved?

Well, I've got 7 tabs open right now in Safari, and it is using approx. 50 megs of memory.

      Hello, While ~104 GB of space may seem generous (at least compared to other e-readers which have 8-32GB), I feel at this price point the device should have a Micro SDXC card slot for expansion, particularly if it allows audio books to be installed and played. I hope to see more reviews of 6" phone-sized e-readers on Neowin in the future. It will be interesting to see how they compare. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems.       Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth).       I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛

      At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
